GM Baadur Jobava wins David Bronstein Chess Memorial 2014

GM Baadur Jobava has won the David Bronstein Chess Memorial 2014 held in Minsk from Feb 11-19. The Belarus Chess Federation organises the event every year. David Bronstein was the former World Chess Championship challenger who nearly dethroned Mikhail Botvinnik in 1951. He was born in 1924 in Ukraine and passed away in 2006 in Minsk.
Georgian Grandmaster Baadur Jobava won the tournament after beating Sergey Fedorchuk and Mikhailo Oleksienko (both Ukraine) on tie-break. The three players completed the event with 7,0/9 points each. The Open A had 139 participants from 21 countries, including 65 Grandmasters and 33 International Masters.
The Open B had 98 players from nine countries. Mikhail Sadovski (BLR 2093) and Nail Qoshqar Bashirli (AZE 1940) shared the first place with 7,5/9 points each.
Here is an interesting game from the Bronstein Chess Memorial this year. Do you remember that GM Jobava had recommended that Viswanathan Anand play 1.b3 against Magnus Carlsen in Chennai at the World Chess Championship 2013? It's called the Nimzowitsch-Larsen attack ;)

Association of Chess Professional Plans Return of Adjournments with Anna Muzychuk and 6 GMs

The Association of Chess Professionals (ACP) is going to try and interesting new idea at a chess tournament in Amsterdam next month. The games will be adjourned after move 40 and resumed the next day! The time control will also be like in the old days: 2.5 hours for the first 40 moves.
The chess tournament named "Golden Classic" will be held July 14-22 July in Amsterdam on the sidelines of the Dutch National Chess Championship and the SPA Chess Open.
The tournament will be a single round robin with seven players: Vassily Ivanchuk (UKR, 2764), Gata Kamsky (USA, 2741), Baadur Jobava (GEO, 2721), Krishnan Sasikiran (IND, 2720), Le Quang Liem (VIE, 2703), Emil Sutovsky (ISR, 2687) and Anna Muzychuk (SLO, 2598).
Tournament director will be Jeroen van den Berg who also runs the Tata Steel tournament in Wijk aan Zee and the Univé Tournament in Hoogeveen each year. The tournament won't be rated. The players will be fighting for an overall prize-fund of US $35,000. The sponsor is private and doesn't want to be mentioned.
Do you know how adjournments work in chess?It's almost two decades since the adjournment rule went out of style and the rulebook. All games at top tournaments were adjourned after the after the time control (after either move 40 or 60). The player whose turn it was to move wrote the move on a piece of paper and the arbiter sealed it in an envelope. The players could then spend the day or a rest day as well analysing the position with their team. The game resumed with the arbiter opening the envelope and playing the move when the chess tournament resumed.

Ni Hua Wins Dubai Chess Open on Tie-Break

After nine rounds at the Dubai Chess Open, five Grandmasters concluded their score with seven points each. These chess players were Ni Hua from China, Baadur Jobava and Mikheil Mchedlishvili from Georgia, Normunds Miezis from Latvia and Sandipan Chanda from India. The 14th Dubai Open was held from April 14 to 24 at the Dubai Chess & Culture Club in United Arab Emirates. A total of 160 players from 32 countries took part in the tournament, with the largest group of 37 arriving from India.

Ni Hua took the winner’s trophy on the best tie-break – sum of the ratings of the opponents (without one result).

Top seed GM Baadur Jobava of Georgia won the Dubai International Chess Blitz Tournament on April 20 at the Dubai Chess Club in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. He beat six opponents and drew with three others to finish alone with 7-1/2 points out of 9 rounds.

Four players shared 2nd to 5th place. Tied with 7 points each were GMs Mikheil Mchedlishvili of Georgia, Vladimir Baklan and Alexander Kovchan of Ukraine, and Avetik Grigoryan of Armenia. A strong group of 84 players from 21 countries took part in the one-day competition including 21 Grandmasters and 9 International Masters. At stake was a total of $5,000 in cash prizes.
On his way to winning the top prize of $1,000 Jobava, rated 2706, beat GMs Gevorg Harutjunyan of Armenia, David Arutunian and Levan Pantsulaia of Georgia and IM Fouad El Taher of Egypt. Jobava drew with GM Ehsan Ghaem Maghami of Iran, Alexander Kovchan of Ukraine and coasted to a draw in the last round with compatriot GM Mikheil Mchedlishvili.

GM Baadur Jobava is 2011 European Rapid Chess Champion

Does this put GM Baadur Jobava on a good run? It surely does. A double congratulations to the grandmaster from Georgia. He has won the European Rapid Chess Championship 2011 organised on December 17 and 18 in Warsaw, Poland. Here is the latest tournament chess news update via www.chessdom.com.
The Championship was organised by the Warsaw Foundation for Chess Development in cooperation with the Polish Chess Federation, under the auspices of the European Chess Union.
The tournament was played over 13 rounds of Swiss system with the time control of 15 minutes for a game for a player, with an increment of 10 seconds per move. From among 729 players, Grandmaster Baadur Jobava finished clear first with 11 points which included four straight victories in the final games. Last week Jobava convincingly won the 32nd Edoardo Crespi Trophy.
There was a huge tie for the second place with 10.5 points. A tiebreak was held which game 18-years old Russian GM Sanan Sjugirov took the silver medal, while local chess fans are happy to see GM Robert Kempiński claiming the bronze.
The total prize fund was 20,000 € + item prizes worth 2,000 €. Main prizes 16,250 € and special prizes 3,650 €. First place was 4,000 € worth. Earlier on Friday GM Hrant Melkumyan from Armenia won the 2011 European Blitz Chess Championship.
