GM Baadur Jobava wins David Bronstein Chess Memorial 2014

GM Baadur Jobava has won the David Bronstein Chess Memorial 2014 held in Minsk from Feb 11-19. The Belarus Chess Federation organises the event every year. David Bronstein was the former World Chess Championship challenger who nearly dethroned Mikhail Botvinnik in 1951. He was born in 1924 in Ukraine and passed away in 2006 in Minsk.
Georgian Grandmaster Baadur Jobava won the tournament after beating Sergey Fedorchuk and Mikhailo Oleksienko (both Ukraine) on tie-break. The three players completed the event with 7,0/9 points each. The Open A had 139 participants from 21 countries, including 65 Grandmasters and 33 International Masters.
The Open B had 98 players from nine countries. Mikhail Sadovski (BLR 2093) and Nail Qoshqar Bashirli (AZE 1940) shared the first place with 7,5/9 points each.
Here is an interesting game from the Bronstein Chess Memorial this year. Do you remember that GM Jobava had recommended that Viswanathan Anand play 1.b3 against Magnus Carlsen in Chennai at the World Chess Championship 2013? It's called the Nimzowitsch-Larsen attack ;)

GM Sergey Fedorchuk Wins Reykjavik Chess Club International

The Reykjavik Chess Club International took place from 1st to 8th October at the Reykjavik Chess Club on Iceland. The tournament format was ten-player round robin. It is the Club’s hope that the event will be held every year. Guests from Ukraine, Grandmasters Sergey Fedorchuk and Mikhailo Oleksienko, dominated the field to convincingly take the top two spots leaving the nearest followers full two points behind.
The winner was decided only in the last round when Oleksienko couldn’t break the resistance of IM Gudmundur Kjartansson. Meanwhile, Fedorchuk won to take a clear first place with 8,0/9 points. (www.chessdom.com)

GM Abhijeet Gupta wins Commonwealth Chess Championship 2013

Indian Grandmaster and former world junior champion Abhijeet Gupta won the Commonwealth Chess Championship after scoring 9,0/11 points and edging Sergey Fedorchuk (Ukraine) and Sergei Tiviakov(Netherlands) on tie-breaks to take the first place in the tournament that also incorporated South African Open Chess Championship.
Fedorchuk and Tiviakov took the second and third place in the Open Section, respectively.
Indian Grandmasters rounded up the medal count as Dibyendu Barua (8,5 points, 4th place) got the Commonwealth silver medal and last-year champion M.R. Lalith Babu (8,5 points, 5th place) won the bronze.
IM Jovanka Houska from England (8,5 points) won the gold medal among women, while Soumya Swaminathan (India; 8,5 points) settled for silver and Mary Ann Gomes (India; 7,5 points) won the bronze.
The Indians also dominated the junior section with G. Akash winning the gold, Sahaj Grover getting the silver and Rakesh Kulkarni securing the bronze medal. Kulkarni also won the South African open blitz championship held during the course of the championship.
South African President Jacob Zuma attended the closing ceremony and emphasized the importance of chess education in his speech.

Sergey Fedorchuk Wins 87th Paris Chess Championship 2012

Grandmaster Sergey Fedorchuk has won the 87th Paris Chess Championship held from July 7-15 at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin, 82 avenue Georges Lafont 75016 Paris. The Championship was played in 4 Groups, each being a 9-round Swiss event. 669 players took participation, which is a significant increase from the last year’s 633.
The main FIDE Open was limited to the players rated above 2200. GM Fedorchuk won the title a full point ahead of the field and 3,000 euros. FM Ryan Rhys Griffiths (Ireland) and Lars Rindlisbacher (Switzerland) earned IM norms.

A Open was for the players rated between 1800 and 2300. Ukrainian FM Nazar Ustianovich won the event with impressive 8.5/9 points in the field of 202 players. He earned 1500 EUR.
B Open was for the players rated between 1400 and 1900. Among the 285 participants Michael Hajage from France took the first place with 8 points. His prize is 1000 EUR.
C Open was reserved for the players rated under 1500. Alexandre Coulet (FRA 1440) won the top prize of 600 EUR by finishing clear first with 8.5 points. 119 players competed.

The chess news update from Navalmoral de la Mata is that... Wait a sec? From where? Yes, Navalmoral de la Mata. Navalmoral de la Mata is a municipality located in the province of Cáceres, Extremadura, western Spain.
The 17th Torneo Internacional Villa de Navalmoral was held from 3rd to 7th December. Ukrainian Grandmaster Sergey Fedorchuk won the tournament ahead of 66 players with a full one-point lead.
