Ni Hua Wins China Rapid Chess Event in Senzhen

Alexandra Kosteniuk's Chess Blog for Daily Chess News and Trivia (c) 2013

Hi everyone,

The 3rd China Rapid Chess Tournament took place from July 29th until August 1st in Senzhen. Eight of the strongest players from the Oriental country will battle in a round-robin event with a rapid time control. With such a strong field and the little amount of rounds, it was not surprising that four players tied on first place, all with 4 points. The first tiebreak criterion was the result of direct encounters among the tied players. Ni Hua was declared winner after evaluating this factor.

Second place went to Wang Yue, who arrived directly after leading his national team to beat the USA in Ningbo. Third place went to Zhou Jianchao. Former women’s world champion Hou Yifan had an unfortunate event and finished in last place. (www.chessdom.com)

Danzhou Chess GM Tournament: Ni Hua in Sole Lead with Perfect Score

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2013

Hi everyone,

The 4th Danzhou Grand Master Chess Tournament is taking place in Danzhou, Hainan, from 20 May to 29 May 2013. Ten Chinese Grandmasters compete in the round robin tournament. Ni Hua is leading the field as the only player that maintained a perfect score after three rounds. Two of these victories were achieved with the black pieces.

The first victim of the fourth seeded player was Xiu Deshun. A very long and hard-fought battle finished with Ni Hua getting the faster passed pawns on the queenside.

In the second round the leader had to face the Dutch put up by Lu Shanglei. After a series of simplifications the players went into a queens and rooks endgame where white’s initiative was enough to get ahead. Shanglei resigned on move 41 when he is about to lose his rook. Young GM Wei Yi was the last one to fall. He played white and agreed to get in a sharp Ruy Lopez. A tactical sequence around move 22 left him a piece down and he decided to resign instead of suffering any longer. Rating favorites Bu Xiangzhi and Ding Liren are sharing second place with 2.5/3. (Chessdom.com)

Standings after 3 rounds:
1 GM Ni Hua 2646 3

Ni Hua wins HD Bank chess title in Vietnam

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012

Hi everyone,

HCM CITY — Chinese GM and third seed Ni Hua won the second HD Bank International Open Chess Tournament yesterday with eight points after nine games.

Top seed and local favourite GM Le Quang Liem was second with 7.5 points and received a prize of US$5,000. Ni, 29, drew with second seed GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son in the ninth and last game to win the title and $10,000.

Son finished third with 6.5 points, sharing the prize with five other players, who had the same number of points. They were followed by seven players with six points and 16 players with 5.5 points.

"The game against Liem (the top seed) the toughest game for me in the tournament. I was losing the game, but was lucky to come back and hold on for a draw," said Ni, China's former number one.

Ni was unbeaten through the tournament.

"I am happy with the result. I have played better than at the two previous tournaments," Liem said. He finished seventh at English Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Championship and failed to defend his title at the Aeroflot Open in Moscow.

Meanwhile, WGM Pham Le Thao Nguyen earned six points to win the first prize of $1,500, followed by compatriot WGM Nguyen Thi Thanh An and China's WGM Gu Xiaobing. — VNS
