GM Baadur Jobava wins David Bronstein Chess Memorial 2014

GM Baadur Jobava has won the David Bronstein Chess Memorial 2014 held in Minsk from Feb 11-19. The Belarus Chess Federation organises the event every year. David Bronstein was the former World Chess Championship challenger who nearly dethroned Mikhail Botvinnik in 1951. He was born in 1924 in Ukraine and passed away in 2006 in Minsk.
Georgian Grandmaster Baadur Jobava won the tournament after beating Sergey Fedorchuk and Mikhailo Oleksienko (both Ukraine) on tie-break. The three players completed the event with 7,0/9 points each. The Open A had 139 participants from 21 countries, including 65 Grandmasters and 33 International Masters.
The Open B had 98 players from nine countries. Mikhail Sadovski (BLR 2093) and Nail Qoshqar Bashirli (AZE 1940) shared the first place with 7,5/9 points each.
Here is an interesting game from the Bronstein Chess Memorial this year. Do you remember that GM Jobava had recommended that Viswanathan Anand play 1.b3 against Magnus Carlsen in Chennai at the World Chess Championship 2013? It's called the Nimzowitsch-Larsen attack ;)

ZMDI Open 2013 was organized by the ZMDI Schachfestival Dresden e.V. from 10th to 18th August at the Ramada Hotel in Dresden, Germany. A total of 199 players competed in three elo sections. The main event was 9-round Open A with 99 participants.
Grandmasters Samuel Shankland (USA), Mikhailo Oleksienko (Ukraine) and Georg Meier (Germany) shared the first place with 7,0/9 points each. Shankland took the winner’s trophy on best Buchholz score.
Top prizes in Open A were EUR 2000, 1600, 1200, 800, 720, 640, 560 etc

Igor Kurnosov receives his trophy from Saeed Al Maqbali, chairman of the UAE Chess Federation, in the presence of Hussain Abdullah Al Khoury (left) and Ebrahim Al Marzouqi, board member of the club.
Abu Dhabi: Russian Grandmaster Igor Kurnosov came from behind to win the Masters Championship title in the 20th Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival.
Kurnusov beat Ukrainians GM Zahar Efimenko and GM Mikhailo Oleksienko and Armenian GM Avetik Grigoryan in a tie-breaker after all four finished the nine rounds with 6.5 points.
Kurnosov, the top seed, was third after the eighth round but, in his final match, he beat his compatriot GM Aleksandr Rakhmanov as Oleksienko and Efimennko played out a draw and Grigoryan beat Indian GM Suri Vaibhav.
Second seed GM Andre Istratescu, of France, also drew with international master Ulvi Bajarani from Azerbaijan. (Gulf News)

Abu Dhabi: Ukrainian Grandmasters Zahar Efimenko and Mikhailo Oleksienko became the joint leaders of the Masters Championship of the 20th Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival with six points each and will face each other in the final round to decide the winner.
Efimenko was held to a tie by GM Aleksandr Rakhmanov in the eighth and penultimate round, while Oleksienko beat Russian GM Sergey Volkov to join his compatriot at the top of the standings. Former leader and top seed, GM Igor Kurnosov, was forced to settle for a tie with Indian International Master Suri Vaibhab, leaving both players on 5.5 points along with Rakhmanov and GM Avetik Grigoryan.
In the final round, Vaibhab will face Grigoryan and Kurnosov will play his compatriot Rakhmanov.
Iranian Behrang Kaboodi became the sole leader of the open tournament with 7.5 points from eight matches after beating Filipino Francis Erwin Dimarucut, while IM Ahmad Al Zayat from Libya was second with seven points after his tie with Greek Theodoros Varvadoukas.
Five players share third spot with 6.5 points: Haitham Mahmoud, Theodoros Varvadoukas, Manuel Alberto and Esmail Namir.
In the final round, Kaboodi will face Namir, Al Zayat will play against Mahmoud and Alberto against Varvadoukas.
UAE youngsters dominated almost all the junior competitions. Sultan Al Darmaki won the under-9s category by beating Haitham Al Kindi, Hareb Al Shamsi won the under-11s after defeating Saeed Al Hussaini, and Tilal Al Hammadi won the under-13s with a win over Mohammad Marshool. Esmail Shahalyiv, from Azerbaijan, won the under-15s title by beating Iranian Borna Derakhshani. (Gulf News)

GM Mikhailo Oleksienko of Ukraine has won the 12th Sautron International Chess Open that was held from October 27 to November 3 at the Phelippes Beaulieux Center in Sautron, France. A total of 165 players competed in the 9-round Swiss event that was rated with FIDE and FFE. The prize fund was 7000 euros. GM Mikhailo Oleksienko from Ukraine took a clear first place with 7,5 points Grandmasters Alexander Zubarev and Aleksandr Karpatchev were joint second half a point behind. Maxime Lagarde shared the 4th place and earned his second GM norm.
Final standings:1. GM OLEKSIENKO Mikhailo 2539 UKR – 7,5
2-3. GM ZUBAREV Alexander 2583 UKR and GM KARPATCHEV Aleksandr 2458 RUS – 7,0
