National Chess Challengers Begins in India

Hi everyone,
The latest chess news from home of the reigning world chess champion Vishy Anand is that the 50th edition of National Challengers Chess Championship (formerly known as Indian National B Chess Championship) has begun on Friday. 

As is usual in Indian chess, there were upsets in the opening round itself. N Krishna Teja beat urth seed IM P Karthikeyan of Tamilnadu. Another upset came from Goa youngster Ritviz Parab beating IM P Konguvel. However, other top seeds played through to the second round with victories. 

Top seed and defending champion International Master Vikramaditya Kulkarni of Railways defeated Jalpan Bhatt of Gujarat while second seed IM S Satyapragyan beat Ankit Gajwa. IM Debashis Das beat Kotepalli Sai Nirupama.  of Andhra Pradesh.

A total of 236 players, including 24 International Masters, one Women Grandmaster and 213 rated chess players from across India are taking part in the championship that would also select players for the forthcoming National Premier Chess Championship scheduled to be held in October.
