GM Alexey Dreev wins Indonesia Chess Open 2013

GM Alexey Dreev drew the last round game with India's GM GN Gopal to win the Indonesia Chess Open comfortably. In other results of the last round, GM Nigel Short (6.5) beat GM Alexander Moiseenko (7.5), GM Surya Shekhar Ganguly (7) drew GM Batchuluub Tsegmed (6.5) and GM Abhijeet Gupta (6.5) beat GM Marco Sandro (7).
On the lower boards with remaining players on 6.5/10 and in contention for a top-ten finish, GM Oliver Barbosa found GM Dao Tien Hai too strong as the former Vietnam No. 1 comfortably halted his Kingside attack and then converted the endgame, GM Shyam Sundar M ended WGM Elisabeth Paehtz’s fine run, GM Susanto Megaranto quickly drew IM Nguyen Duc Hoa, GM Vaibhav Suri beat GM Darwin Laylo and GM Cao Sang lost to GM Vadim Malakhatko.
International title norms were achieved by:

More chess updates coming in from the Indonesia Chess Open 2013 where eight rounds have been played. GM Alexey Dreev (6/7), who has been leading, played GM Sandro Mareco (5.5/7) and drew thereby keeping the sole lead with 6.5/8.
There was a crowd of players at 5/7 and witnessed quite a few draws. GM Ehsan Ghaem Maghami drew with GM Alexander Moiseenko, IM Nguyen Duc Hoa drew with GM Nigel Short and WGM Elisabeth Paehtz drew with GM Ivan Ivanisevic.
In other major results, GM Eduardo Iturrizaga lost to GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly and GM Dao Tien Hai beat GM Ivan Sokolov. GM Gundavaa Bayarsaikhan lost to GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son and GM Renier Vazquez Igarza beat IM Djurabek Khamrakulov.

Indonesia Chess Open 2013 Round 4: GM Ivan Ivanisevic Leads

It has taken four rounds of play to have a sole leader at the Indonesia Chess Open 2013. GM Ivan Ivanisevic, who was leading with GM Avetik Grigoryan until the previous round, has taken sole lead after four rounds with a perfect score. On 3.5/4 are GMs Aleksey Dreev, Surya Shekhar Ganguly and Hoang Thanh Trang. Dreev outplayed local hope GM Susanto Megaranto in the endgame after achieving a better pawn structure while Ganguly was simply too strong for GM John Paul Gomez. But the main attention was on the Hoang encounter with GM Oliver Barbosa, where the Filipino sacrificed his Queen for a number of active minor pieces and a dangerous looking attack along open files against an exposed King. Hoang, however, played with great accuracy, combining attack and defense with her Queen and brought home the point.

In other significant GM encounters, top seeded Alexander Moiseeko managed to win the exchange, but Sandro Marco generated resources to draw, while the former student Eshan Ghaem Maghami held the draw against his old teacher Nigel Short. Vaibhav Suri was happy to use the white pieces to also draw the higher rated Eduardo Iturrizaga, while it was the same result in the match-ups between Igarza Renier Vazquez and Gundavaa Bayarsaikhan, and Jan Ehvest and Antoaneta Stefanova.
Vadmim Malakhattko came close to winning against Abhijeet Gupta, but the Indian GM was able to liquidate into a drawn Rook ending.
With Megaranto losing, the best Indonesian player is again Anjas Novitas who recovered from his first loss against a GM in the third round to beat WGM Elisabeth Paehtz.

38 GMs at Indonesia Chess Open 2013!

One of the strongest chess opens of the year, Indonesia Chess Open 2013, has started. There was going to be very few easy matches even in the first round given the strength in depth of the Indonesia Open Chess Championship (IOCC) 2013 with as many as 91 titled players (including 38 GMs) in a field of just 108 players (participants list).
Most of the top seeds, Alexander Moiseenko, Nigek Short, Aleksey Dreev, Eduardo Iturrizaga, Surya Shekhar Ganguly, Ivan Solokov and Ivan Ivanisevic all won comfortably to be amongst the early leaders. A favorite in highly rated GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son was however held to a comfortable draw by Indonesia’s best young prospect for its next IM in Lufti Ali Muhammad and their latest WGM Medina Warda Aulia also did not disappoint either with a fighting draw against GM Ehsan Ghaem Maghami.
Young Anton Smirnov successfully claimed a repetition against GM G.N Gopal, GM Sandro Mareco could not make headway against the experienced WGM Maria Manakova while GMs Salem A R Salleh, Oliver Barbosa and Eugene Torre had to also settle for half a point against IM Emmanuel Senador, FM Le Tuan Minh and local Firdaus Maksum respectively.
The big upset was the win over GM Tsegmed Bathuluun by Kazakhstan’s big hope in the young talented WGM Guliskhan Nakhbayeva. FM Anjas Novitas is still one of Indonesia’s best players and he proved it with a comprehensive win against GM Mark Paragua with two less known countrymen, Satarno and Adhy Margana upsetting IMs Djurabek Khamrakulov and Sophie Milliet, even if the latter messed up a winning position in a desperate time scramble.
After the intense battles of the first two days of Indonesia Open 2013, round three was seemingly a relatively peaceful affair, but even if there were draws amongst the leaders on the top four boards, all were not with fights.
GMs Alexander Moiseenko, Vaibhav Suri, Nigel Short, Vadim Malakhatko, John Paul Gomez, Aleksey Dreev, Gundavaa Bayarsaikhan, and Surya Sekhar Ganguly were therefore joined by GMs Antoaneta Stefanova and Igarza Renier Vazquez who had the only really quick draw and Hoang Thanh Trang who held off Jaan Ehlvest on 2.5/3.
On board five GM Ivan Ivanesevic won against GM Darwin Laylo and on board eight the unfancied, but very determined GM Avetik Grigoryan stopped giant killing local FM Anjas Novitas to take the lead. Ivanisvic and Grigoryan will play each other in Round 4 on the top board.
Notable other leading results include GM Eduardo Iturrizaga beating GM G N Gopal, GM Oliver Barbosa prevailing over IM Denny Juswanto, GM Sandro Mareco proving too good for IM Sadikin Irwanto, GM Ehsan Ghaem Maghami edging WGM Tuvshintugs Batchinmeg and Indonesia’s No. 1 GM Susanto Megaranto outplaying veteran countryman GM Cerda Barus to move back into contention, also with 2.5/3.
So we have two players on 3,0/3 and no less than 18 players with 2.5/3 going into round 4 and there are some exciting match-ups that might help determine the final winners! (www.chessdom.com)

Jenderal Sudirman 86 Jakarta 10220 – Indonesia. The Indonesia Open Chess Championship 2013 is open for all chess players from federations member of FIDE with ELO Rating minimum 2200.
