GM Lazaro Bruzon wins Edmonton International Chess 2013

Cuban Grandmaster Lázaro Bruzón finished with a draw at the Edmonton International Tournament, where he got clear first place with a socre of 23/27, adding six Elo points to his rating that now rises to 2698.

In a round where everything was already decided, after getting first place at the previous one, the five-times Cuban champion split the point with National Master Robert Gardner (2213), thus finishing with seven wins and two draws.

He dominated the event from start to finish, leaving English GM Nigel Short (2677) in clear second place with 17 points. Locals Richard Wang (2371) and Eric Hansen (2577) followed with 14 points each.

The peace treaty signed in the final game avoided Bruzon from passing the 2700-barrier again; after having gotten to 2701 points earlier. He will try to return to this elite group in the Canadian open that will begin on July 13th.

This tournament will have a very strong lineup, which includes Short, Dutch veteran Ivan Sokolov, Lithuanian Eduardas Rozentalis, local hero Eric Hansen, Iranian Elshan Moriadabadi, etc.

Edmonton Chess Festival: Cuban GM Lazaro Bruzón in Lead

Hi everyone, 

With three wins in as many rounds, Cuban GM Lazaro Bruzon is the sole leader at the Edmonton Chess Festival in Canada. He beat local talent Richard Wang in the third round to surge ahead. Bruzon, Wang and Cuban Rodney Perez were with perfect scores so far. The system at the event is the 3-1-0 system. Bruzon has 9 and Perez is in second place with 7 points. Perez drew with black pieces with local player Dale Haessel in the third round.
Also playing well at the event are Israeli Victor Mikhalevski and Canadians Eric Hansen and Edward Porper. Mikhalevski beat former world title challenger Nigel Short, while Hansen and Porper beat their compatriots Robert Gardner and Maxin Doroshenko respectively. The line-up for the fourth round is Bruzón-Perez, Short-Wang, Hansel-Haessel, Porper-Gardner and Mikhalevski-Doroshenko.

Standings after three rounds: Bruzón (9 points), Perez (7), Wang (6), Mikhalevski (5) Porper (4), Hansen (4) Short (3), Doroshenko (3), Haessel (1 ) and Gardner (0).

World Junior Chess R10 - GM Richard Rapport Holds on to Sole Lead

As the World Junior Chess Championship nears the conclusion, the tenth round was played in Athens on Monday. All games were decisive on the top six boards, according to the round-up report via Chessdom. GM Richard Rapport held on to his sole lead with a win at 8.5/10. GM Alexander Ipatov won on the second board and is just half-a-point behind. GM Yu Yangyi, GM Ding Liren, GM Nils Grandelius and GM Samvel Ter-Sahakyan are in third place at 7.5 points. Some interesting results saw IM Eric Hansen draw with GM Zherebukh, norm winner Mark Lapidus held to a draw by IM Heimann and FM Wei Yi beat IM Shyam Nikil.

Eric Hansen is Canada National Chess Champion 2012

IM Eric Hansen has become the Canada Chess Champion 2012 after winning the tournament held from July 8-13 in Victoria, BC, Canada. The Championship was organised by Brian Raymer, Paul Leblanc, Roger Patterson. Chief Arbiter was IA Mark S. Dutton.
A total of 78 players competed in the Premier Section. Hansen also won $2,000 for the effort.

 

Final standings in Premier section:1. IM Eric Hansen - 7.5
2. GM Eugene Perelshteyn - 7.0
3-7. FM Richard Wang, GM Victor Mikhalevski, GM John Peter Fedorowicz, IM Steven C. Zierk and IM Edward Porper - 6.5
8-11. NM Howard Wu, FM John C. [Jack] Yoos, IM Leon Piasetski and FM Loren Brigham Laceste - 6.0 etc

The U2000 Section had 46 players. Robert North, Paul Leblanc, Yifei Han and Darren Bates shared the first place with 6.5 points each.

The U1600 Section had 32 players. Kajan Thanabalachandran and Kristijan Gjorgjevik shared the first place with 7 points each.
