GM Nils Grandelius Wins 2nd Golden Sands Chess Open 2013

Swedish Grandmaster Nils Grandelius has won the 2nd Golden Sands open tournament that was held 10-18th June in the Bulgarian sea resort Golden Sands. Grandelius defeated Indian GM Arun Prasad in the last round to complete the tournament with 7,5/9 points. Vladislav Nevednichy and MR Venkatesh were also victorious to catch Zbynek Hracek and Vladimir Georgiev in shared second place. WGM Mary Ann Gomes was the best placed woman with 6,5 points. As the World Junior Chess Championship nears the conclusion, the tenth round was played in Athens on Monday. All games were decisive on the top six boards, according to the round-up report via Chessdom. GM Richard Rapport held on to his sole lead with a win at 8.5/10. GM Alexander Ipatov won on the second board and is just half-a-point behind. GM Yu Yangyi, GM Ding Liren, GM Nils Grandelius and GM Samvel Ter-Sahakyan are in third place at 7.5 points. Some interesting results saw IM Eric Hansen draw with GM Zherebukh, norm winner Mark Lapidus held to a draw by IM Heimann and FM Wei Yi beat IM Shyam Nikil.

Ellinor Bengtsson: Can I be lucky in chess?
Nils Grandelius: The players have full information so it’s not like the card game, but no one can predict exactly what will happen during the game.
Ellinor Bengtsson: Is there a difference in the game strategy between countries?
Nils Grandelius: Players from the countries of Eastern Europe follow a certain structure, they have all followed the same school and we know roughly what they have learned. We from the western countries are more unpredictable on the board.
Ellinor Bengtsson: What kind of player are you?
Nils Grandelius: I am the aggressive type who likes to attack. But during the European Championships I tried to play a little safer.
Ellinor Bengtsson: How to keep up the concentration?
Nils Grandelius: When it’s your opponent’s turn, you can go get coffee and relax. It is usual to start with some quick moves in the opening, and then later think about 15-20 minutes for each. The longest game I’ve played took seven and a half hours.
