Hi everyone,

Congratulations to the Ukraine team (Kateryna Lahno, Anna Ushenina, Mariya Muzychuk, Natalia Zhukova and Inna Gaponenko) for winning the gold at the Astana Women's World Team Chess Championship 2013 with a very steady performance. The premier chess event for women concluded in Kazakhstan with the final round played today.
China and Russia were right behind Ukraine and picked up the silver and bronze respectively. The final round witnessed Ukraine drawing their match with Russia and securing the silver. After six rounds, Ukraine had climbed to the top of the table and maintained that lead right till the end. China outplayed India with 2,5-1,5 score in the final round to secure the silver medal. Ju Wenjun defeated Eesha Karavade while other games finished in draws. Georgia won a tough match to beat Kazakhstan in the last round, but could only make it to the fourth place in the standings.
Here are the final team standings and board standings. Stay tuned for some great photos from the closing ceremony and a personal post by the 12th Women's World Chess Champion Alexandra Kosteniuk on her personal blog www.chessqueen.com. Chess Queen™ Kosteniuk did well to pick up the bronze medal (and precious rating points) on Board 2 with a rating performance of 2502. Also for Russia, IM Valentina Gunina won the bronze medal on Board 1 and WGM Olga Girya obtained the gold medal on Board 5. Also read a nice report on Russia's performance in Lenta.ru (Google translate link so don't worry if you don't know Russian.) Astana Chess R3: China, Russia Lead Women's World Team Event
Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2013
Hi everyone,

The third round started with the symbolic move in the game Ju Wenjun-Anna Zatonskikh made by Chinese Ambassador Mr. Zhou Li. He came today to support his compatriots and it’s obviously helped the Chinese girls, who confidently won against the American team with 3,5-0,5 score.
“Turkish team came to learn and gain experience here,” the captain and coach of the team, Adrian Mikhalchishin, said in the interview. Everyone could notice that Turkey showed really stubborn defence in the previous rounds. Nevertheless luck was not on the side of Turkish girls today as they lost all the games in the match against Russia.
The outcome of the match Ukraine versus Kazakhstan was not easy to predict till the end. Katerina Lahno relatively quickly outplayed the leader of the team Guliskhan Nakhbayeva but on the last board Inna Gaponenko lost to Abdumalik Zansaya, the youngest participant in the tournament. In time trouble Inna lost good winning chances and made a few crucial mistakes. The world champion Anna Ushenina was also close to get into big troubles today but her opponent didn’t find very nice move 26…Kh8 and Anna Ushenina got a chance to force a draw. Once again Natalia Zhukova left alone in the playing hall and the outcome of the match depended on the result of her game. After a few hours of play Ukrainian IM got an advantage and played precisely till the end to save the match.
Georgian team has recovered after yesterday's defeat, and showed great result in the match against France. Silvia Collas was the only French player, who managed to grab half a point in the game against Nino Khurtsidze, while all the others were defeated.
The only match which finished in a draw was India versus Romania.
After the third round China and Russia continue to lead and play the fourth round against each other on Wednesday. Ukraine remains on the third place.

Astana Chess: Women's World Team Event Begins with Kazakhstan holding USA to Draw
Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2013
Hello everyone,

The first round of WWTC in Astana got under way on the 3rd of March 2012. FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov made a first symbolic move in the game Nakhbayeva-Zatonskih to start a tense struggle between young ambitious team from Kazakhstan and a rating favorite of the match the team from the USA. For a long time it seemed that the match would finish in favor of the Central Asian team but Dinara Saduakasova, who was so close to the victory, made a mistake and let her opponent to make a draw. Thus, the USA team equalised the score and managed to save face.
There were no surprises in other matches – all other rating favorites managed to win quite confidently. China and Russia lost only half a point each and was stronger in the matches against France and Romania respectively. It was not difficult for Ukrainian team to outplay Indian team, which came here without such top seeds as Humpy Koneru, Harika Dronavlli and Tania Sachdev. World Champion Anna Ushenina and Ukrainian champion Maria Muzychuk won against Nisha Mohota and Rout Padmini and, after two draws on other boards, the final score is 3-1 in favor of Ukraine. After the first round four teams are in the lead – China, Russia, Ukraine and Georgia. Pictures of the round 1.

Hello everyone,
The Russians...
... the Chinese.... and...
... the Indians.
Can you name all these chess girls?
The opening ceremony of the Women's World Team Chess Championship took place on Saturday at the Duman Hotel in Astana, Kazakhstan. FIDE president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov welcomed all participants and guests and gave diplomas to players from the team of Kazakhstan - Guliskhan Nakhbayeva and Dinara Saduakassova. The girls achieved the norms at the Istanbul Olympiad (September, 2012), but the award was decided to be given at another significant event - the Team World Championship.
After the national anthem of the Republic of Kazakhstan and FIDE anthem the Chief Arbiter of the tournament Takis Nikolopoulos conducted the ceremony of drawing of lots. Each team was invited to the stage and the top players were requested to choose a flower with the number.
Check all the pictures of the opening ceremony. Games will start at 3 p.m. local time. Online commentary will be by GM Sergey Shipov and WGM Anna Sharevich at the official website.

Congratulations to Alexander Grischuk for Becoming World Blitz Chess Champion 2012
Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012
Hi everyone,
This is a great double for Russia as Alexander Grischuk becomes the World Blitz Chess Champion 2012 today in Astana, Kazakhstan. He played some solid chess by taking a one point lead on the first day of play and keeping the tempo by finally winning today - half a point ahead of World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen. Carlsen went in for an inspired performance by winning all his eight last games today, but it was still half-a-point shy of Grischuk's early lead. World Rapid Chess Champion Sergey Karjakin was right behind the duo at third place. Carlsen is runners-up in both the World Blitz and World Rapid now.

Congrats to Sergey Karjakin for Becoming World Rapid Chess Champion 2012 in Astana
Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012
Hi everyone,
 |
World Rapid Chess Champion 2012
Sergey Karjakin of Russia |
Congratulations to Russia's Sergey Karjakin for winning the World Rapid Chess Championship in Astana, Kazakhstan a few minutes back. In the end, it was the steady performance, the cool head, and the pure chess that counted. Karjakin put his overnight loss to Magnus Carlsen behind him and went on to win the World Championship a full point ahead of World No. 1 Carlsen!
It appeared that Magnus Carlsen would run away with the title particularly after he finished Day 2 1.5 points ahead of the field. But, as the stats pointed out, he had not yet played the stalwarts. The third day was a self-destruct for him. He began the third day with a win over Ismagambetov, but went in for two straight losses against Vassily Ivanchuk and Alexander Grischuk.
The next draw against Radjabov put him out of contention for the title. In the final round, he might have even lost the silver medal had Veselin Topalov not missed the endgame win. Eventually, the silver went to Carlsen and the bronze went to Topalov.
The World Blitz Chess Championship 2012 would be held on Monday and Tuesday in Astana with 15 chess games played each day.
