Shanghai Chess Masters Grand Slam: Kramnik beats Aronian in play-offs

Hi Everybody,

So, it's going to be Vladimir Kramnik who will join Alexei Shirov in Bilbao along with Viswanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen!

The Russian grandmaster defeated Levon Aronian in a blitz play-off after the sixth round at the Shanghai Chess Masters Grand Slam. Earlier, Alexei Shirov had already qualified to play in Bilbao. You can check the official website here.

In the blitz play-off both the players won their games with White but Kramnik eventually won on time in the Armageddon game.

Earlier, in the sixth round, Kramnik drew with Wang Hao and Aronian drew with Shirov.

The first part of the 2010 Grand Slam Masters Final took place from September 3-8 in Shanghai, China. Aronian, Kramnik, Shirov and Wang Hao played for two qualification spots for the second part that is to be held from October 9-15 in Bilbao, Spain.

Shanghai Chess Masters Grand Slam: Shirov leads after five rounds

Building on his win after the fourth round, Alexei Shirov of Spain notched up another win in the fifth round at the Shanghai Chess Masters Grand Slam tournament. He has already qualified for the Bilbao section of the Grand Slam event.

In the other game of the fifth round Vladimir Kramnik beat Levon Aronian with Black. That makes the sixth round decisive about which of the two will join Shirov in Bilbao along with Anand and Carlsen in October.

The first part of the 2010 Grand Slam Masters Final takes place 3-8 September in Shanghai, China. The Bilbao section will be held from October 9-15 in Bilbao, Spain.

Shanghai Chess Masters Grand Slam: Shirov qualifies for Bilbao

Spanish Grandmaster Alexei Shirov has become the first of two players who are to qualify for the Bilbao section of the Grand Slam Chess Masters Event.

He beat Vladimir Kramnik in Shanghai in the fourth round to reach sole first place in the standings. Aronian and Wang Hao drew their game.

Shanghai Chess Masters Grand Slam: Aronian, Shirov lead

The third round saw interesting games at the Shanghai Chess Masters Grand Slam Chess Tournament on Sunday. While Levon Aronian and Vladimir Kramnik drew their games, while Alexei Shirov beat Wang Hao.

The two top players from this Shanghai Grand Slam Final Masters will qualify to play in Bilbao along with Magnus Carlsen and Viswanathan Anand from October 9-15, 2010.

Round 3 results:

1. Shirov-Wang Hao 1-0
2. Kramnik-Aronian 1/2-1/2

Standings after 3 rounds:

1. Aronian, Shirov 2.5
2. Kramnik 1.5
3. Wang Hao 0.5

The scoring pattern is based on two points for a win and one point for a draw.

Shanghai Chess Masters Grand Slam: Aronian leads after two rounds

Hello Everyone,

Both the games were drawn in the second round at the Shanghai Chess Masters Grand Slam event featuring four top grandmasters - Levon Aronian, Vladimir Kramnkin, Alexei Shirov and Wang Hao. You can find the official website

In the second round on Saturday, Aronian drew with Shirov while Kramnik drew with Hao.

The two top players from this event will go on to compete with Magnus Carlsen and Viswanathan Anand in Bilbao later this year for the second section of the Chess Masters Grand Slam.

Shanghai is known for landmarks like the Bund and City God Temple. It is a modern city famous for the Oriental Pearl Tower. Shanghai is placed on the Yangtze River Delta on China's eastern coast, and is equidistant from both Beijing and Hong Kong.

The Huangpu River flows through the city dividing it into the older or Puxi area and the new or Pudong area.

The Grand Slam Chess Masters began in Shanghai on September 3. It includes four top grandmasters - Armenia's Levon Aronian, China's Wang Hao, Russia's Vladimir Kramnik and Spain's Alexei Shirov.

Top two winners from the Shanghai event will participate in the Grand Slam Final Tournament to take place in Bilbao, Spain, from October 9-15, 2010. The winners will join the already seeded players - Viswanathan Anand (India) and Magnus Carlsen (Norway) - in Bilbao. Here is the official website.
