Cesenatico Chess Open: GM Bogdan Lalic Wins Clear First

Hi everyone, 

GM Bogdan Lalic of Croatia has won the 17th Torneo di Cesenatico that was held from August 31-September 8 with a strong performance from start to finish at the State Middle School n. 1 Viale Torino in Cesenatico, Italy. You can also locate him as quite an active Grandmaster on Facebook.

A total of 160 players competed in three groups – Open A (elo 1900 and higher), Open B (U2000) and Promotion (juniors born on 1997 and later). The Open A had 70 participants. In the last round GM Bogdan Lalic defeated the earlier leader IM Olga Zimina to secure a clear first place with 7,0/9 points.

The Open B had 102 participants. Simone Marangoni (ITA 1855) won the section with 7,5/9 points. In the “Promotion” event Luigi Doronzo (ITA 1410) and Marco Landi (ITA 1416) shared the first place with 6,5/8 points each.

2-5. IM Mrdja Milan 2377 CRO, IM Roeder Matthias 2412 GER, IM Zimina Olga 2337 ITA and FM Schacher Gerd 2347 ITA – 6,5

1st Winter Sea Deluxe Open in Gabicce Mare from Jan 2

The latest chess tournament update via Chessdom is that the 1st Winter Sea Deluxe is set to take place from 2nd to 6th January, 2013, in Gabicce Mare, Italy, next to the Adriatic Sea. The tournament is organized by the Fano Chess Club and Dario Pedini. The club celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2013.

This year the Fano Chess Club 1988 already organized the 2nd Italian Rapid Championship with 450 players and the 1st Fano on the Sea & Carnival International Open with 144 players.

The playing venue is the terrific old-fashioned Hotel Michelacci ****Superior, with spa and excellent food, everything at 52 EUR full board in the double room. The nearest airports to arrive in Gabicce are Rimini, Bologna and Ancona.

La Meridiana Chess from Dec 7 in Perugia, Italy

Here is the latest chess tournament calendar update via Fide. The 2nd Torneo Internazionale La Meridiana is set to take place on 7-9th December at the La Meridiana Hotel in Perugia, Italy. The Open A will be for the players rated between 1700 and 2350 elo, while the Open B is reserved for the players rated under 1700.

Both groups will be played over 5 rounds of Swiss system with the time control 90′ to finish + 30″ bonus. The tournament is organized by the Accademia Internazionale di Scacchi. Chief Arbiter is IA Antonio Sanchirico. Access the official website for more details.

Imperia Chess Fest Begins in Italy on September 2

The latest chess tournament news is about the longest-running tournament in Italy. The International Chess Festival of Imperia, the longest running open event in Italy, will see its 54th edition on 2-9th September, 2012. The Festival was established in 1959, with the legendary Enrico Paoli (later a Grandmaster) winning the first edition. Other former winners in Imperia are prominent names like Milan Matulovic, Borislav Ivkov, Vlastimil Hort and Gyula Sax.

The Festival consists of four tournaments:
- Open A (for players rated higher than 1900, 9 rounds Swiss)
- Open B (for players rated between 1500 and 2000, 8 rounds Swiss)
- Open C (for players rated U1600 or beginners, 8 rounds Swiss)
- Youth Open (U14 and U1500, 8 rounds Swiss)

The playing venue is the Palazzetto dello Sport, located in San Lazzaro near the port. Top prizes in the Open A are € 1.000 / € 700 / € 500 / € 400 / € 300. Currently top rated players are GM Sergey Volkov RUS 2594, GM Krasimir Rusev BUL 2540, IM Petar G. Arnaudov BUL 2486, IM Andjelko Dragojlovic SRB 2367 and IM Zivojin Ljubisavljevic SRB 2246. Unique Chess Exhibition Opens in Grandate, Italy

We have news of a very interesting chess exhibition being held in Grandate, Italy (near Como, very close to the border with Switzerland). The exhibition is open till August 4 and includes chess exhibits including chess pieces, chess boards, chess photos, chess stamps, etc. You can check the official website: www.museodelcavallogiocattolo.it



This is a unique exhibit 'The Chess Game' by Italian artist Enrico Baj, 1988. Limited edition of 15 sets exist all over the world; Every sculpture on the chessboard is different, and therefore no pawn, knight or bishop is the same as another. The pieces are identified by the presence or absence of colored elements. The chessboard measures cm 272x272. Pieces average height cm 75.

Salento Chess Tournament Begins in Italy from May 19

The Salento International Chess Tournament will be held from May 19-26 in Gallipoli, Lecce, Italy. There will be three events, Open A for the players rated above 1950, Open B for the players rated under 2050 and Weekend Open on 25-27th May.

Open A is a 9-round Swiss for the prize fund of 4000 EUR. First prize is 900 EUR, 2nd is 700 EUR, 3rd 600 EUR etc.

Open B is the 8-round Swiss with the prize fund of 1100 EUR. Weekend Open is a 5-round Swiss for the prize fund of 1100 EUR.

The playing venue is at the Ecoresort Le Sirenè
