Hello chess blog friends, some more chess tournament news via FIDE: The spa town of Teplice, in the Czech Republic, hosted the IX Annual International Chess Tournament Open Teplice 2014. The winner was GM Hrant Melkumyan from Armenia with 8/9 points. Second place went to GM Daniel Naroditsky from USA. In third place was Eduard Andreev from Ukraine. The tournament had participants from 23 countries and included 15 Grandmasters and 16 International Masters. You can find more information on the official website: www.openteplice.cz.

From Alexandra Kosteniuk'sFIDE chess tournament news update is that Armenian Grandmaster Hrant Melkumyan has won the 1st International Chess Open Casino Graz which took place February 14-21 at the Casino Graz and Joanneum Quarter in Graz, Austria. Melkumyan concluded the Open A with 7,5 points from nine rounds, a full point ahead of the other players. IM Rajpara Ankit from India, who drew Melkumyan in the final round, earned a Grandmaster norm. The Open B had 57 participants rated under 2000 elo. Scoring 6 points out of 7, grandmaster Hrant Melkumyan became Armenia’s Chess960 (Fischer Random Chess) champion of 2012.
With 5 points Zaven Andriasian came 2nd, while Levon Babujyan came 3rd with 4 points. Chess960, or Fischer Random Chess, is a chess variant invented by former World Champion Bobby Fischer. It uses the same board and pieces as standard chess but the starting position of the main pieces is chosen at random. In the winter of 2011, when chess is the only thing that truly keeps you warm, the European Blitz Chess Championship 2011, was organised under the auspices of Bronisław Komorowski – the President of the Republic of Poland and the European Parliament.
GM Hrant Melkumyan
The event took place on December 16 in Warsaw, Poland. The Championship was organized by the Warsaw Foundation for Chess Development in cooperation with the Polish Chess Federation, under the auspices of the European Chess Union. The tournament was played over 13 double rounds of Swiss system with the time control of 3 minutes for a game for a player, with an increment of 2 seconds per move. 367 players competed.
Grandmasters Alexei Dreev, Radoslaw Wojtaszek and Hrant Melkumyan shared the first place with 20/26 points each. After the knock-out tiebreak with the time control of 4 minutes for white and 3 minutes for black for a game, with an increment of 1 second per move, Hrant Melkumyan took the gold medal, while Alexei Dreev earned the silver. The total prize fund was 10,000 € – main prizes 7,650 € and special prizes 2,350 €. First place was 2000 € worth. The competitions continue with the European Rapid Chess Championship 2011.
