Armenia Chess 'Match': GM Gabriel Sargissian weds Sweetheart Liana Avoyan

Hi everyone, 

Our heartiest congratulations to Grandmaster Gabriel Sargissian and Liana Avoyan for walking down the aisle today. The wedding ceremony of Sargissian—who plays for the three-time World Chess Olympiad champion Armenian national team, and who was declared Armenia’s 2008 athlete of the year—was held at a church in capital city Yerevan. 

Sargissian’s wife, Liana Avoyan, studies at Yerevan Agricultural University. Gabriel and Liana had met one year ago. President of Armenia, Armenian Chess Federation President Serzh Sargsyan has become the godfather of the newlyweds.

Yes, chess can take care of your bread, butter and jam! The Armenian team that became champions at the 40th Chess Olympiad in Istanbul recently are going to receive a nice cash award: 20 million AMD. Levon Aronian, Levon Aronian, Sergei Movsesian, Vladimir Akopian, Gabriel Sargissian, Tigran Petrosian, will get the noted award. Also, 114 million AMD are given by the Government to award the other members of the Armenian team, according to the Press service of Armenian Government.

Aronian and Sargissian open chess school in Yerevan

Hi everyone,

Grandmaster school has been founded in Yerevan by Levon Aronian and Gabriel Sargissian. The aim of the new chess center, found by the two gold medalists from the Chess Olympiad and with the sponsorship of the Armenian Chess federation, is the contribution to the chess development of children and chess talents of age 10-18 years old.

Levon and Gabriel are planning to set up training courses with the most talented young chess players of the country on the basis of individual approach and work. This refers to the prize-winners in World and European Championships, the chess players taken the 1st-2nd places in Armenian Youth Championships and the girl champions.

Two-three sessions will be held in a year for the duration of two weeks. Together with Aronian and Sargsyan other experienced specialists will be involved in the training work. With this Armenia hopes to increase the number of top FIDE rated players in the years to come.
