Dubai Chess Open R8: GM Aleksandr Rakhmanov Leads

Russian Grandmaster Aleksandr Rakhmanov assumed the lead in the 15th Dubai Open Chess Championship after beating GM Viktor Laznicka with black pieces in round 8. Rakhmanov is holding 7 points and is paired to play white with GM Yuriy Kuzubov in the final round. Five players are just half-a-point adrift of the leader.

A very popular chess tournament, the Dubai Chess Open for the Sheikh Rashid Bin Hamdan Al Maktoum Cup is going to be held from April 6-16, 2013. This is going to be the 15th edition of the chess event. The event is traditionally held in the Dubai Chess Club and Culture Club. The format of the chess tournament is Swiss nine rounds with 1. The 15th DUBAI OPEN CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP will be played in 9 rounds according to the Swiss System with 1 hour 30 minutes for the whole game with an incremental time of 30 seconds per move. The Organizing Committee will grant the prizes total of which is US $ 50000 along with the title trophy to the winner. The Dubai International Airport is the main port entry to DUBAI and is centrally located with daily connection flights to and from major airports. Indian grandmaster Sandipan Chanda, fetching a lucky win over Parimarjan Negi, will now take on the other tournament leader Normunds Miezis at the Dubai Chess Open.
In the last round, which will be played on Monday, Miezis has White against Sandipan. One of them can get the top prize of $10,000. There are twelve grandmasters half a point behind the leaders. In that group, which includes the three rating favourites: Baadur Jobava, Loek Van Wely and Vladimir Akopian, the pairings are as follows: Ganguly - Jobava, Mchedlishvili - Van Wely, Akopian - Hovhannisyan, Andriasian - Gupta, Miroshnichenko - T.L.Petrosian, Ni Hua - Kuzubov. The 14th edition of the Dubai Open Chess Championship for the Shaikh Rashid Bin Hamdan Cup to be held at the Dubai Chess and Culture Club this month begins on April 14. You can access the official website here.
Speaking to Gulf News after a press conference to announce the event yesterday, Ebrahim Al Bannai, the chairman of the Arab Chess Federation and Dubai Chess and Culture Club, said: "Every year players from different parts of the world are competing in this championship, which has grown in reputation and participation.
"This year we have players from even El Salvador and South Africa. Players from North American countries are also participating. The fact that Jobava Baadur from Georgia with a rating of 2,706 is our top seed has lifted the profile of the event."
The championship will be held from Saturday to April 24 with a record 180 players from 32 countries competing for the title. "Nearly 30 local players will also be playing. The UAE's campaign will be led by Salem A.R. Saleh, who is the Arab and Asian champion. This is a good chance for local players to compete and improve their rating," said Najeeb M Saleh, the Technical Manager of the Dubai Chess and Culture Club.
GM Abhijeet Gupta wins Dubai Chess Open in exciting last round finish

Grandmaster Abhijeet Gupta took things right down to the last round to win the Dubai Chess Open in the last round by beating Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi. Incidentally, Negi had led for much of the tournament. GM Gupta, a former World Junior Champion, is now the first Indian to have won the Dubai Chess Open title. Abhijeet finished the tournament on 7.5 points out of a possible nine to take home the winner's purse of $8000 and 17 rating points which will take him above the 2600 mark.
Negi was second on tiebreak from among four other players - Csaba Balogh of Hungary, Murtas Kazhgaleyev of Kazakhstan and Jon Ludvig Hammer of Norway. Negi, actually, just needed a draw for the title but blundered on the 27th move. Meanwhile, top seed Krishnan Sasikiran lost to Csaba Balogh of Hungary.
The best result among the women was by WIM Veronika Schneider who took the 12th place after 11 grandmasters on tiebreak - also among 11 grandmasters with 6.5 points each.

The national Indian champion, Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi is in good form and back in sole lead after beating Grandmaster Jon Ludvig Hammer in the eighth round. Both had gone into the eight round as joint leaders. Following the duo were seven grandmasters.
After five rounds we have Negi with 7 points and another Indian Grandmaster, Abhijeet Gupta following him at 6.5 points. There are 11 other grandmasters, including top seed Krishnan Sasikiran, with 6 points each!

GM Ehsan Ghaem Maghami from Iran won the blitz chess event as part of the ongoing Dubai Chess Open. Here is the video of the tiebreak that he played against Armenian GM Zaven Andianisian. Maghami won the ENOC Dubai Blitz 2011 Cup.

The young Grandmaster, Parimarjan Negi has beaten Krishnan Sasikiran in an exciting game in the sixth round to take sole lead at the Dubai Chess Open 2011. Definitely a great win for the young grandmaster. Negi is now at 5.5 points out of a possible six and is half point clear of the rest of the field. He takes on Murtas Kazhgalyev of Kazakhstan in the next round. You can access the full standings at this link and the official website here.

The leaders are Indian GMs Krishnan Sasikiran and Parimarjan Negi, as well as Mikheil Mchedlishvili from Georgia. There are seventeen players following with 4.0/5 points.

The Dubai Chess Open has increasingly become popular so much so that this year we have 40 grandmasters taking part. That's something to talk about. The tournament is being held for the thirteenth time this year. Also, there are 9 Women Grandmasters, 22 International Masters, three Women International Masters, 16 Fide Masters and six WFM.
A total of 168 players are competing in the 9 round Swiss. At stake is the Sheikh Rashed Bin Hamdan Al Maktoum Cup and $45,000 in cash prizes. GM Krishnan Sasikiran of India is the top seed.
There were two main upsets in the first round at the Dubai Chess and Culture Club. Woman International Master Ghader Pour Shayesteh of Iran, playing black, shocked sixth seed GM Aleksej Aleksandrov of Belarus in only 54 moves of a Ruy Lopez.
In the other upset, Candidate Master Sanal Vahap of Turkey won with Queen's Indian defense against GM Hammer Jon Ludvig.
Woman FIDE Master Dinara Saduakassova of Kazakhstan used the Sicilian defense to hold GM emanuel Berg of Sweden to a draw in a marathon 82 moves. WFM Sarasadat Khademalsharieh of Iran likewise GM Ashot Anastasian to a draw. Second seed Vladimir Akopian of Armenia survived a scare against FM Das Satantan of India.

A record number of players from 41 countries and 170 players from India, Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, France, Germany, England, Egypt, Jordan, Palestine, a group of players from Iran, and the host UAE are participating in this prestigious championship.
Grandmaster Sasikiran Krishnan rated 2682 from India is the top seed of this championship while 56 Grandmasters are expected to give tough competition. 10 Women Grandmasters, 33 International Masters, one Women International Master and 17 Fide Masters are participating in this championship.Total prize fund is $45,000.
