Capablanca Chess Memorial in Havana May 7-18: Four-Time Winner Ivanchuk Confirms Participation

Ukraine's Vassily Ivanchuk, keeping up with his traditional chess ritual, will participate in the Capablanca Memorial Chess Tournament, to be held in Havana, Cuba, from May 7 to 18. Ivanchuk will be one among six elite-group players invited to the tournament.
Ivanchuk's presence consolidates Capablanca Memorial tournament as one of the best ones with high rivalry among the elite group, according to Jose Luis Ramirez, spokesman of the Cuban Chess Federation.
The Ukrainian player, winner of the 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2010 editions of the championship in Havana will visit the island for the sixth time. Ivanchuk has a huge chess fan following in the region.
Ivanchuk will play in the elite group against Grandmasters Hungary's Zoltan Almasi (2,707), who is the current champion, Spain's Francisco Paco Vallejo (2,707), the Philippines' Wesly So (2,738) and Cubans Lazaro Bruzon (2,676) and Leinier Dominguez (2,757). The players from the elite group have an average elo ranking of 2,720.6 pints.
The Capablanca Chess Memorial begain in 1962 as an initiative of legendary Ernesto "Che" Guevara. The first winner was Argentine Miguel Najdorf, followed by Russians Boris Spassky, Vassily Smyslov and Lev Polugaesky.
Since 1974, the Capablanca Chess Memorial has included two groups. In 1980, there were four group and the format remained thus until 2006 when it established the current division of one double-round elite group including six players, making the tournament the most important one held in Cuba.

Here is the latest chess tournament news update via FIDE: The 53rd Cuban Chess Championship for men was held from 22nd January to 5th February in Santa Clara. Thirteen players competed in the round robin tournament with the average elo 2473. GM Isan Reynaldo Ortiz Suarez emerged national champion after concluding the event with 8 points.
The Cuban Chess Championship for women is currently ongoing in Pinar del Rio.

Cuban Bruzon Wins Mexican Chess Tournament

Cuban Grandmaster Lazaro Bruzon has won the 25th edition of the Chess tournament Carlos Torre in Memoriam. Bruzon remained undefeated with seven points. Peruvian Emilio Cordova also scored seven points, but lost out on tiebreak. The third place went to another Cuban, Juan Carlos Obregón, with the same store but also below in tiebreaks. Seven points were also scored by Caribbean Elier Miranda and local Luis Carlos Torre, who finished fourth and fifth.

Zone 2.3 Chess: Cuban GM Yaniet Marrero earns Entry to Women's World Chess Championship 2014

Havana, Sep 23 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Grandmaster Yaniet Marrero has won the only place in the Women's World Chess Championship by winning the Zone 2.3 Chess Tournament of America for women. She was the Cuba women's chess champion in 2011. She won the tournament with 7, 5 points which included six wins and three draws. She picked up 23 rating points.
The Zone 2.3 women's chess tournament was played in San Salvador based on the Swiss System with 16 competitors from six countries.

Feb Chess Ratings: Cuban Stars at +2700

For those requesting more chess news from Latin America, here's a nice round-up report of chess ratings with reference to Cuban chess stars. In a report datelined Havana, Cuba, the Radio Cadena Agramonte states Cuban Grandmasters Leinier Dominguez and Lazaro Bruzón have maintained their rating over 2700 elo in the latest February, 2013 rating list.

Leinier Dominguez
Leinier did not vary his rating (2723 points), but rose from 25th to 24th spot, to establish himself as leader of Latin America and third in the continent, behind the Americans Hikaru Nakamura (9th with 2767) and Gata Kamsky (18th with 2740).
Bruzón added six points to his score, and reached the 2707 rating for placing on the seat 38th, which exceeds in 10 spots his position in January´s ranking. The "top ten" of the world had little changes since again, Russian Vladimir Kranmik (2810) and Armenian Levon Aronian ( 2807) are Carlsen's escorts to form a privileged trio over 2800 elo points.
Azeri Teimour Radjabov (2793), Russia's Sergey Karjakin (2786), Indian Viswanathan Anand (2780), Bulgarian Veselin Topalov ( 2771), Nakamura, Azeri Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (2766) and Russian Alexander Grischuk (2764), complete the top ten.
Russia (2746) commands in the contest by countries, followed by Ukraine (2702) and China (2670), while Cuba is placed 18th thanks to 2589 points averaging its 10 leading figures.
This group is made up, besides Leinier and Bruzón, by Yuniesky Quesada (2596), Isam Ortiz (2585), Yusnel Bacallao (2543), Yuri Gonzalez (2543) , Holden Hernández (2541), Walter Arencibia (2526), Antonio Carlos Hevia (2524 ) and Aramis Alvarez (2513).(ACN)
