Tournament Director is GM Maurice Ashley and Chief Arbiter is Franc Guadalupe. The tournament format is 9-round Swiss with the time control 40/2; SD/30 and 5 second delay from the start.

Playing in Bergamo, the talented young chess player from the Philippines won the title with 4.5 out 6 - a full point ahead of Baadur Jobava. Zoltan Almasi was third with 3 points. Capablanca Chess Memorial in Havana May 7-18: Four-Time Winner Ivanchuk Confirms Participation

Ukraine's Vassily Ivanchuk, keeping up with his traditional chess ritual, will participate in the Capablanca Memorial Chess Tournament, to be held in Havana, Cuba, from May 7 to 18. Ivanchuk will be one among six elite-group players invited to the tournament.
Ivanchuk's presence consolidates Capablanca Memorial tournament as one of the best ones with high rivalry among the elite group, according to Jose Luis Ramirez, spokesman of the Cuban Chess Federation.
The Ukrainian player, winner of the 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2010 editions of the championship in Havana will visit the island for the sixth time. Ivanchuk has a huge chess fan following in the region.
Ivanchuk will play in the elite group against Grandmasters Hungary's Zoltan Almasi (2,707), who is the current champion, Spain's Francisco Paco Vallejo (2,707), the Philippines' Wesly So (2,738) and Cubans Lazaro Bruzon (2,676) and Leinier Dominguez (2,757). The players from the elite group have an average elo ranking of 2,720.6 pints.
The Capablanca Chess Memorial begain in 1962 as an initiative of legendary Ernesto "Che" Guevara. The first winner was Argentine Miguel Najdorf, followed by Russians Boris Spassky, Vassily Smyslov and Lev Polugaesky.
Since 1974, the Capablanca Chess Memorial has included two groups. In 1980, there were four group and the format remained thus until 2006 when it established the current division of one double-round elite group including six players, making the tournament the most important one held in Cuba.

Get set for the traditional 17th Unive Chess Tournament to be held from October 18-26 in the town hall of Hoogeveen, Netherlands. The main Crown Group will see two talented juniors competing against two experienced players in a double round robin event. The first round is on 20th October.
The players are Michael Adams (England 2753), Wesley So (Philippines 2706), Loek van Wely (Netherlands 2693) and Robin van Kampen (Netherlands 2607). The 2012 champion at the event was Hikaru Nakamura. The additional events are Unive Open with a strong international field and two Amateur tournaments (morning and afternoon groups). There are three Grandmasters in joint lead at the Las Vegas Chess International 2013 after five rounds: Filipino Grandmaster (GM) Wesley So defeated Georgian GM Tamaz Gelasvili to share the lead after five rounds in the 2013 Las Vegas International Chess Festival at the Riviera Casino & Hotel in Las Vegas. So hiked his total to 4.5 points, the same output of GM Alejandro Ramirez of Costa Rica, and GM Manuel Leon Hoyos of Mexico.Ramirez defeated GM Ruben Felgaer of Argentina, while Hoyos subdued defending champion GM Aleksandr Lenderman of the United States. Another Filipino entry, GM Enrico Sevillano, defeated American GM Conrad Holt to earn 4.0 points.
Sevillano is now in a six-way tie for fourth place along with Gelashvili and GMs Ray Robson of the US, Jaan Ehlvest of Estonia, Varuzhan Akobian of Armenia and Victor Mikhalevski of Israel. (Marlon Bernardino)

Reykjavik Chess Open: Pavel Eljanov, Wesley So, Amin Bassem Share First

The Reykjavik Chess Open has concluded with three joint winners - Pavel Eljanov, Wesley So and Amin Bassem. The final round witnessed a three-move draw between Eljanov and So. There were six players tied to go for the third place. Of them, only Egyptian GM Amin Bassem won his game to tie for first.
Ivan Cheparinov played against the youngest GM in the world, Wei Yi. The Bulgarian was a rook down, but had two pawns and the initiative for it. At move 37, he went for a perpetual check to save the draw, according a tournament report via Chessdom.
Anish Giri was an exchange down against Gawain Jones, and the Englishman even had the initiative, but the first seed was able to equalise and finish the tournament with a very respectable score of 7.5/10. Polish GM Grzegorz Gajewski had a very good tournament before the last round, but was not able to hold Amin Bassem. The Egyptian played with white and the players went into an interesting line arising from the Sicilian Defense. Amin Bassem won a pawn, but it did not seem enough to get the full point. Gajewski made some inaccuracies in the rook endgame and the Egyptian eventually won the game after 52 moves.
The winners of last year’s World Junior Championships for men and women faced each other at the last round of the Reykjavik Open. Turkish GM Alexander Ipatov defeated Women’s Junior World Champion WGM Guo Qi in 50 moves. The Chinese played a Queen’s Gambit Declined and Ipatov decided to give up the bishop pair in exchange of the initiative. The rooks endgame was slightly complicated and the Turkish star demonstrated that he is very well prepared in this part of the game.
With this result, Alexander Ipatov finished on 7/10, winning a few rating points. Guo Qi stayed on 6/10, but also got some extra rating points. She had two remarkable games in this tournament: drawing with GM Gawain Jones and defeating GM Yuriy Kuzubov.

Asian Zone 3.3 Chess: Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, Wesley So qualify for World Chess Cup

The last round of the Asian Zone 3.3 Open Championship proved to be a bit of an anti-climax with most of the work already done in the previous eight rounds and so the eagerly watched game between Cao Sang (5) and Wesley So (6.5) was disappointingly for the spectators, a quick draw, but a result that ensured that So became the first World Cup qualifier.
With this, Susanto Megaranto (5.5) and Rogelio Antonio (5.5) who both earlier had an outside chance of qualifying should both leaders lose had little to play for and soon after also agreed to a draw.
However John Paul Gomez (5) and Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son (6.5) was game on from the beginning, Nguyen seizing the opportunity to win and besides taking the remaining qualifying spot, he also become the outright winner.
With this, the top finishers are:1. Nguyen 7.5/9, 2. So 7/9, 3-4. Megaranto, Antonio 6/9. 5-10. Cao Sang, Munkhgal Gombosuren, Darwin Laylo, Mark Paragua, Gundavaa Bayarsaikhan, Eugene Torre 5.5/9
In the Women's Championship, with nothing to lose, Philippine No.1 Catherine Perena won in a long game against already confirmed winner Nguyen Thanh Thi An who desperately wanted to remain undefeated but would still have been happy to be clear first with 6.5/9 and qualifying for the World Championship.
But it was the young sensation Bernadette Galas who impressed again, once again lifting Filipino spirits, this time by beating Hoang Thi Bao Tram and grabbing a share of second and fourth places on 6/9 together with with Medina Warda Aulia who had earlier defeated Nguyen Thi Mai Hung and Pham Le Thao Nguyen who beat Chelsie Monica Shite. Filipino chess icon GM Eugene Torre has said that while the Filipinos finished 21st in the recent Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, they proved that they can slug it out with the world’s elite, beating top teams Bulgaria and England. The Filipinos even moved to joint second in a field of 143 after a draw with No. 4 Hungary and victories over the Bulgarians and the Englishmen. But defeats to China and Romania in the closing rounds spoiled their remarkable run, according to an article in The Philippine Star.
“It was an eye-opener that we could slug it out with the elite teams,” said Torre, Asia’s first grandmaster who at 60 remains as sharp as ever.

Wesley So Wins Quebec Open Chess Championship

Grandmaster Wesley So from the Philippines has won the Quebec Open Chess Championship that was held from July 21-28, 2012. He beat GM Bator Sambuev of Canada to gain a clear first. The tournament was held at the beautiful venue College Brebeuf in Montreal, Canada.
Canada’s most successful tournament attracted 9 GMs and 1 WGM, as well as 10 IMs looking for GM norms. 32 players competed in the invitational section for a first prize of $4 000.
So finished on 7.5 points, leaving the earlier co-leader Lazaro Bruzon from Cuba half a point behind. Bruzon took a quick draw with black against Anton Kovalyov. So had also recently won the Toronto International Chess Tournament. So would be playing the top board for the upcoming Istanbul Chess Olympiad. The prize fund of the Quebec Open Chess Championship was $18,000. A total of 277 players participated in all the groups.

Filipino GM Wesley So Wins Toronto Chess International

The tournament was a 7-round Swiss with 18 participants and organized by the Chess Institute of Canada. Wesley So finished with a total of six points from five wins and two draws, half a point ahead of his closest rival, IM Nikolay Noritsyn of Canada.
The Crown Section, hosted by Chess Institute of Canada was a FIDE Rated 7-Rounds “Standard” Swiss Event, participated by 18 rated players (3 GMs, 5 IMs & 2 FMs) from 4 countries (Canada, Lithuania, Israel and Philippines). With his latest victory, Wesley took home the top purse of $4,000. Wesley continues his Canadian tour with the Quebec Open Chess Championship 2012 which gets underway from July 21 to 28 at the beautiful venue College Brebeuf in Montreal, Canada.

The Philippines National Chess Championship 2011 adds to the chess month of July. It is being held from July 16-23 in the Manila. The men's section includes 14 players and the men's section includes 12 players - all competing in a round-robin format.
