Big Chess Comeback in UK Schools

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012

Hi everyone,

This week, both the Daily Mail and the Independent have carried articles on how chess is making a dramatic comeback in British primary schools. Teachers have come to see it as a major stimulant for improving pupils’ concentration with academics believing it can also be used to improve maths skills.

A total of 175 schools – including those serving deprived areas – have reintroduced the game to the curriculum in the past two years. The charity behind its revival, Chess in Schools and Communities (CSC), is optimistic that the take-up will spread to 1,000 state schools in three years.

As 10-year-old Olivia Kenwright took a break from playing the game during a timetabled lesson, she agreed she was pretty sure it was helping her brain. “It’s really good for helping out with other subjects,” she said.

Olivia is a pupil at Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School in Kensington, in the heart of inner-city Liverpool – one of the 175 schools to start playing the game again. Davidson John, another 10-year-old who was a keen footballer but now prefers the board game, agreed with her, saying, “It can help you with sorting out problems.”

Chess helping Kids improve School Results in South Africa

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012

Hi everyone,
Here is an article based on the Moves for Life chess experiments and training with children in Africa.

"Two years ago, a chess trust was established in Pretoria to bring chess to children across the country. The programme is called Moves for Life (MFL), and I am one of the MFL trustees. The project has spread steadily and we are now proud of the fact that 20 000 children attend our weekly chess classes. We have trained over 300 teachers, and now have chess in schools from Richards Bay to Nkandla, Cape Town, Pretoria, Midrand, Hotazel, Balfour and more. This programme comprises components that address the needs of children, covering the entire spectrum from preschool to matric," says Dr Kemm, a nuclear physicist, CEO of Stratek Business Strategy Consultants.

Helping Children Find a Better Life with Chess

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012

Hi everyone,

We found this nice chess story about how chess is helping these kids live a better life. Enjoy.

HARLEM — Standing on the opposite sides of a life-sized chess board, Maurice Campbell, 10 and Jhiana Evans, 11, fifth-graders at P.S. 36 in Harlem, rattled off commands that sent their classmates scurrying to white or black squares.

"Knight to F3," said Campbell who was wearing a white shirt with the letter K for king.

"Pawn takes E5," said Evans, wearing a white t-shirt with Q for queen.

Both had only a rudimentary understanding of the game before participating in Chess Lords, a human interactive chess program where kids learn by acting as pieces on a chess board.

But since joining the team, founded by Anthonyquiame Jackson-Bey, the students have improved their critical thinking skills, discipline and mathematical understanding — in addition to a host of other benefits with chess. Read more here.

Kids win chess trophy for school first time in 21 years

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012

Hello everyone,

It thrills us to know whenever someone is having fun with chess. So, we share this nice chess news about 10 talented students representing Jefferson Jr. High School in Woodridge who have, for the first time in 21 years, won the Southeast Dupage Elementary Athletic Association Chess Tournament held at Lace School in Darien Saturday.

The Jefferson team captured first place in the season-ending match-up against six other teams in the school conference, pulling an upset over top-ranked Cass Jr. High School in Darien.

The local players also bring back another trophy to Jefferson for coming in third place in the season with a 7-5 record. Wechman had been telling the nine boys and one girl for days that he knew they could checkmate their way to a surprise win at the tournament.. Each team consists of 10 players ranked by their coach from first to tenth based on chess ability and past performance. The top player of one team competes only against the top players from the other teams at the first board level, on down to the tenth board level.

Five players from Jefferson took home those championship medals for winning their board level: Bashkim on third board, Austin Moca on fourth board, Amber Moca on seventh board, Walter Marsh on eighth board and Anish on tenth board. Four of them won all four games, and Amber won three games and had a draw (worth half a point) in one game.

Three of the champions – Austin, Amber and Marsh – are still in elementary school but were invited to join the team based on their superb chess ability. Austin is in sixth grade, and his sister Amber is in fourth grade at Willow Creek school; Marsh is in fifth grade.

We wish them all great fun with chess always.

Don't forget to share your chess stories with us too.
