Remembering Azerbaijan Chess Talent Vugar Gashimov: Statue Unveiled

Hello chess blog friends, the Azerbaijan press reports that a memorial statue of Vugar Gashimov was unveiled today on the 28th birth anniversary of the talented chess player. Azerbaijan Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Ismail Ismailov said, Gashimov had made a tremendous contribution to chess history of Azerbaijan. He said the Azerbaijan Government would take steps to ensure that Gashimov was remembered. A memorial chess tournament - for children - was also inaugurated today.
Gashimov's father, present on the occasion, thanked the sculptor, Azad Aliyev.. He also spoke about Vugar's love for chess and his joy in keeping the Azerbaijani flag flying high with chess victories.

GM Ulvi Bajarani is Azerbaijan Chess Champion 2014
Hello chess blog friends, some chess news via FIDE - GM Ulvi Bajarani has become the new chess champion of Azerbaijan. The 2014 Chess Championship of Azerbaijan was held from 31st May to 6th June in Baku. Eight players competed in the round robin event. GM Ulvi Bajarani emerged the new national chess champion after concluding the tournament with 5/7 points, leaving the second-placed GM Nijat Abasov half a point behind.

Vugar Gashimov Chess Memorial 2014
Shamkir - the city that lies quietly on the banks of River Chagirchay in the foothills of the Lesser Caucasus - is named after the brightest of stars, the Sun.
Come April 19 and some of the world's best chess stars will gather in the Azerbaijan city to pay homage to another star - Vugar Gashimov. Gashimov is no more, but his beautiful chess remains with us forever. A chess memorial attended by the world's best could alone be a befitting tribute to Vugar Gashimov.
There will be two groups - A and B.
The official website of the event will transmit live all the games along with commentary, in English, Russian, and Azerbaijani, by some of the best in the chess world.
The Azeri comments will come from Grandmasters, honored coach of Azerbaijan, FIDE trainer Anar Allahverdiyev and coach of the national team of teenagers Farid Abbasov.
Two-time Wijk-aan-Zee champion, Olympiad and European Championship participant, honored FIDE coach Gennady Sosonko will also be part of the commentary team.
Along with Sosonko, coach of Vugar Gashimov Viorel Iordakescu will comment the games in English. Sergey Shipov, one of the world's most famous commentators will comment in Russian.
The tournament is hosted and organised by "Synergy Group" which works "For a sustainable future". The opening ceremony will be held on April 19 at Heydar Aliyev Center in Shamkir. Established in 2010, Synergy Group is one of the largest private investment holdings in Azerbaijan. The Group invests in a number of strategic industry areas with high growth potential. Vugar Gashimov
Born on July 24th, 1986 in Baku, Vugar Gashimov achieved his peak ranking-world#6 in November, 2009. He has been the winner of Baku Grand Prix. Representing Azerbaijani team, he became the European champion in 2009. He played a crucial role in the historical victory of the national team at the European Championship held in Serbia. In 2011 he became the winner of Reggio Emilia chess tournament held in Italy since 1958. Playing on behalf of several chess clubs, he became the champion of Croatia, Turkey, Romania, Iran, Spain and Moldova. A silver-medalist, Gashimov was known as a particularly strong blitz chess player. Owner of more than 72 titles, Vugar Gashimov is the winner of Kasparov Cup. For his individual indicators, he became silver medalist of the Chess Olympiad held in 2008. He is also a silver and bronze-medalist of the World Intellectual Games.
Vugar Gashimov passed away on January 10th, 2014 in Heidelberg, Germany at the age of 27. The grandmaster from Baku had been ill for a long time and was under treatment for the last 1.5 years.

Nakchivan Chess Festival in Azerbaijan from May 3

The International Chess Festival Nakhchivan Open - 2014 held in memory of leader Heydar Aliyev will take place in Azerbaijan at the Nakhchivan Chess Center from May 3 to May 13.
The Tournament will be held as the Swiss system (9 rounds). The rate of play will be 90 minutes for 40 moves plus 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move, starting move one.
The last date for registration of the applications for participating in the tournament is April 20, 2014.
The tournament is open to players with an elo of 2250 and above though women player with a rating of 2100 and above are eligible to play.

Azerbaijan and chess fans worldwide paid their final tributes to Grandmaster Vugar Gashimov who was laid to rest in the 'Alley of Honor'. Thousands of fans, along with friends and relatives of the Grandmaster, members of the Azerbaijani national chess team, government officials and Azerbaijan Chess Federation officials paid their last respects on the talented player's last journey. It is sad news that member of the Azerbaijan National Chess team, the talented GM Vugar Gashimov is no more. He was under treatment at a Heidelberg clinic in Germany.
Born July 24, 1986 in Baku, Gashimov was three times Azerbaijani national chess champion. He played in the gold medal-winning Azerbaijani team at the European Team Chess Championship in Novi Sad in 2009 and became winner of Reggio Emilia chess tournament in 2011.
We send our heartfelt condolences to Vugar Gashimov's friends and family.

Horadiz Chess School Re-Opens in Azerbaijan

It is always cool to know when heads of state, politicians who can bring change for the positive, and celebrities support chess. Here is once such chess news report. President Ilham Aliyev inaugurated the Horadiz Chess School after its reconstruction.
The Head of State was informed that the Chess School covers a total area of 500 square meters, AzerTAj reports. The facility was provided with necessary equipment. A bust to national leader Heydar Aliyev was installed in the foyer of the facility.
There are photo stands reflecting national leader Heydar Aliyev`s and President Ilham Aliyev`s attention to development of sports in the country.

2016 Chess Olympiad Gets Generous Bid by Azerbaijan

The Chess Federation of Azerbaijan has come up with a rich offer to host the 2016 Chess Olympiad and 2015 World Cup in Baku. The proposed venue is the Baku Crystal Hall, a new multi-functional indoor complex that was built in order to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2012, according to a report by Chessdom.
The budget for the 2015 World Cup is set to 2,2 million EUR. From this sum 1,28 million EUR is the prize fund, while 256.000 would be the FIDE fee.
The budget for the 2016 Chess Olympiad is the astounding 13,3 million EUR! 6,8 million is set for the first-class accommodation for the players and delegates. Another 1 million is planned for the FIDE Commission for World Championships & Olympiads and intellectual rights.
Baku Crystal Hall
On the top of everything, Azerbaijan offers a special travel grant of 1,5 million EUR to FIDE to allocate for teams requiring travel subsidy. Great news for the federations like Australia and others where players have to pay for the airfare on their own. The other two bids, coming from Albena, Bulgaria and Tallinn, Estonia, appear to be much more modest. The bids are included in Agenda for the 83rd FIDE Congress in Istanbul.

Here is the latest chess news via Fide. The 2012 Azerbaijan Chess Championship for men was held from 22nd to 30th January. Ten players participated in the round robin tournament.
GM Vugar Rasulov defeated GM Sarhan Guliev in the final round to move ahead of the main contender Azer Mirzoev and claim the title of the national champion. Rasulov collected 7 points, while Mirzoev finished with 6.5.
