Srinath, Suede win Asian Juniors Chess in the Philippines
Hello chess blog friends, the Asian Junior Chess Championships have concluded with India and the Philippines picking up the golds. Defending champion Srinath Narayanan of India and Charlene Mikee Suede of the Philippines won the Asian Juniors and Girls Championships, respectively, held 28 November to 5 December 2014 in Tagaytay City, Philippines.
Naranyan, the defending Asian junior chess champion stayed comfortably on top through the tournament keeping at bay strong competition from Asian under-18 champion IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia and FM Paulo Bersamina, both of the Philippines, to finish with a convincing 8 points in the 9-round Swiss. Bersamina won the silver medal with 7 points followed by Garcia with 6.5 points for the bronze medal.
Suede came from behind after losing to compatriot Jerlyn Mae San Diego, the youngest participant, in the first round. She bounced back with a draw in the second round then scored four straight wins to tie for the lead. She won the crucial 7th round game against 2012 Asian Girls champion Ivana Maria Furtado of India and got her revenge against San Diego sister Marie Antoinette in the penultimate round. She won in the 9th round to finish alone with 7.5 points.
WFM J. Saranya placed second with 6.5 points followed by WIM Ivana Maria Furtado with 6 points. Also tied with 6 points but losing in the tie break was WFM Sholpan Zhyulkaidarova of Kazakhstan.

N Srinath Retains Asian Junior Chess Title; Vo Thi Kim Phung Champion in Girls Section

Narayanan Srinath International Master Narayanan Srinath retained his Asian Junior title while J Saranya, also of Chennai finished runner-up in the Asian Junior girls’ championship that concluded at Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates on April 6, 2013. Srinath had won the Asian Junior at Tashkent in June 2012 and made his maiden Grand Master norm. He is also a former World Under-12 champion having won it at Belfort in France in 2005. Winning this title again in back-to-back years gives Srinath another Grand Master norm. He is certain to become a Grand Master.
Srinath finished first and Sahaj Grover of Delhi took second, both remaining undefeated. Top seed Grand Master Salem Saleh of UAE finished third losing to Srinath and to a Vietnamese. Srinath dominated the contest winning seven games and drawing two. The girls’ event was dominated by the Vietnamese and was more exciting. All the players including the champion suffered at least one defeat. Vo Thi Kim Phung of Vietnam won this event ahead of top seed and country mate Nguyen Thi Mai Hung on seven points from nine games.
Woman FIDE Master J Saranya of Chennai finished with the silver medal and had the satisfaction of being the only player to defeat the champion. Saranya gains over 10 Elo and had the highest tie-break on 6.5 points among three players. Defending champion Ivana Furtado of Goa slipped to sixth place. Sharjah which had organised the world junior in 1985 staged the Asian Junior smoothly. In the Asian Junior blitz chess, Anurag Mhamal and Grover tied for first on 8/9 and the former became champion on better tie-break score. Vo Thi Kim Phung (Vie) won the Asian Junior girls blitz championship also. (Chessdom)

J Saranya (Ind), Nguyen Thi Mai Hung (Vie), Diana Assaubayeva (Kaz) 6.5 each; 5-6. Sarvinoz Kurbonboeva (Uzb), Ivana Furtado (Ind) 6 each; 7-10. Rucha Pujari, Riya Savant (both Ind), Dorsa Derakhshani (Iri), Farida Khursanova (Uzb) 5.5 each….36 players.

Indian chess had more to cheer about this Thursday as n Srinathand Ivana Maria Furtado won the Asian junior Chess Championships in the open and girls' category in Tashkent. The title also gave them their first Grandmaster norms.
Srinath played well and won the event with a round to spare. Srinath has won the under-12 world championship in Belfort in 2005. Another Indian chess player, Shyam Sundar, had won the title in Sri Lanka last year when Srinath had been runners-up. Ivana Furtado also performed well. She was followed by Vo Thi Kim Phung of Vietnam and Rucha Pujari of India.

Asian Junior Chess in Uzbekistan and World School Chess in Romania

The National Chess Federation of Uzbekistan will host the first event for chess players under the age of 20 from 29th May (arrival) to 8th June (departure) 2012 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Also, Romanian Chess Federation, the City Hall of Iasi, FIDE and the International School Chess Union will host the World School Individual Chess Championship 2012 (open and girls, under 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17 years old) organized in Iasi, Romania, from 27th April (Arrival) to 7th of May (Departure) 2012. You can register via the Fide website.
