GM Tamaz Gelashvili Wins Boardwalk Chess Open 2012

GM Tamaz Gelashvili has won the open section at the 3rd Annual Boardwalk Chess Open, according to the latest chess tournament news via Fide. GM Gelashvili finished in clear 1st in the Open Section after starting with four wins then drawing in the final round to secure the victory, taking home $1,896 for his weekend’s efforts.
The 3rd Annual Boardwalk Open was held from October 19-21, 2012 at the Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel, 1401 Ocean Ave, Asbury Park, New Jersey. The event had a $15,000 projected prize fund (based on 180 entries) with $10,000 guaranteed. Open Section: $2000-1000-500-300, clear or tiebreak winner $100 bonus, top Under 2300/Unr $700-350. FIDE rated.
Round 3 turned out to be the crucial round of the event as Gelashvili beat the highest seed, GM Sergey Erenbury, while the other GM in the field, Mikheil Kekelidze, was beaten by Aaron Kahn. More details available on the tournament website

Speaking of chess in the US, here's one of the biggest event from the south-eastern part of the country. USCF Online has reported that one of the most ambitious chess events ever held in the Southeastern US, the 2012 US Masters/North Carolina Open, will be held at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Greensboro from August 30 to September 3.

The Long Island Open took place on 16-18th March at the Holiday Inn Islip Airport in Ronkonkoma, USA. Grandmasters Mikheil Kekelidze, Tamaz Gelashvili, Sergey Kudrin and Joel Benjamin all finished at the top of the standings in the Open Section with 4 points but Kekelidze managed to take the title and the $100 bonus prize by virtue of the better tie-break.
Going into the final round Kudrin and Benjamin were half-point ahead of their nearest rivals but their draw on board one allowed Kekelidze and Gelashvili to catch them by winning their final round games against Yefim Treger and FM Nathan Resika respectively. Just few weeks ago Kekelidze won the 21st Annual Eastern Class.
Master section final standings:1-4. GM Mikheil Kekelidze ($780.50), GM Tamaz Gelashvili ($680.50), GM Sergey Kudrin ($680.50) and GM Joel Benjamin ($680.50) – 4.0 5-7. Michael H Bodek, Rawle A Allicock (*$302.00) and WGM Sarai Sanchez (*$302.00) – 3.5 8-12. IM Rafael Prasca Sosa, FM Nathan Resika, Tim Mirabile, Yefim Treger, Robert N Guevara (**$504.00) – 3.5 etc
