Cleveland Chess Open: GM Sergey Kudrin Wins on Tiebreak
Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012Hi everyone,The 5th Annual Cleveland Chess Open was held from August 3-5, 2012, in Cleveland, Ohio at the Sheraton Cleveland Airport Hotel, 5300 Riverside Drive, Cleveland, Ohio.
The Open Section finished in a 3-way tie with GM Sergey Kudrin, IM Bryan Smith and John Miller all scoring 4/5. Each player took home $1400 for their efforts while GM Kudrin finished ahead of IM Smith on the second tie-break to take the title and an additional $100 1st place bonus prize.
Final standings, Open Section (USCF ratings):1-3. GM Sergey Kudrin 2612 ($1500.00), IM Bryan G Smith 2498, ($1400.00) and John M Miller 2063($1400.00) – 4.0
4-11. IM Goran Vojinovic 2555, FM Carl Brandon Boor 2362, Gopal S Menon 2250, Hibiki Sakai 2101, David Allen 2205, Jonathan S Kogen 2189, Sam S Copeland 2184 and FM Matt Hassen 2190 – 3.5 ($187.50 each) etc (48 players)
The event had 6 sections: Open, Under 2000, Under 1800, Under 1600, Under 1300 and Under 1000. All sections were 5 round Swiss tournaments with 3-day and 2-day schedules to play in. Complete information about the chess tournament is available at the official website.

Hi everyone,
In one month, the Summer Chess Festival which includes the U.S. Senior Open and the U.S. Junior Open returns to Houston, this time to the Marriott Houston South at Hobby Airport.
The Junior Open (July 13-15) is for players under the age of 21 as of January 1, 2012, and the Senior Open (July 9-14) is for those who are at least 50 years old as of July 9th. Once again, for those who are not eligible for either National event, we will have the Not-A-Senior-Not-A-Junior Open, July 13-15. In addition to these three events, we will have the always fun Blitz and Bughouse side events.

Among the participants in the Senior Open will be the defending Champion, GM Sergey Kudrin, as well as the USCF President, Ruth Haring. GM Kudrin will also be giving a Simul on Friday morning before the start of the Junior Open. In addition to her participation in the Senior Open, Ruth Haring will also be available to discuss USCF matters with participants and other attendees of the Chess Festival.
The U.S. Junior Open has four sections: U21, U15, U11, and U8 (age as of 1/1/2012). The U21 will have cash prizes and plaques, and the winner gets an automatic spot in the 2013 U.S. Junior Championship, if still eligible by age. The other three sections have trophy prizes. All sections have Place and Class (age and rating) prizes and all participants receive commemorative medals. In addition to the individual awards, the event will have team prizes and players are eligible to enter school or club teams! The U.S. Senior Open has 6-Day and 3-Day Schedules. It has a guaranteed prize fund of $5,000 with the overall winner taking home $1,250! The top three finishers get Commemorative Clocks and six class (age) winners will receive plaques. The event is open to all players age 50 or over, but the top finisher born on or before January 1, 1952 is the official USCF entrant in the World Senior Chess Championship. The Not-A-Senior-Not-A-Junior Open offers a $3,500 Prize Fund, 70% guaranteed. This event has four USCF rated sections: Open (also FIDE rated), U2000, U1600/Unrated, and U1300. For information and on line registration at this link.

GM Sergey Kudrin has won the 18th Annual Northeast Chess Open that was held from June 8-10, 2012, at the Sheraton Hotel (formerly Holiday Inn Select), 700 Main St, Stamford, Connecticut. GM Sergey Kudrin finished with a top score of 4.5 out of five ahead of six other Grandmasters included in the tournament. After winning his first four games, a final round draw with GM Tamaz Gelashvili was enough to secure the Connecticut based Grandmaster the victory.
Open section final standings (45 players):
1. GM Sergey Kudrin – 4.5 ($1000.00)
2-4. GM Milos Perunovic, GM Tamaz Gelashvili and FM Nelson Castaneda – 4.0 ($333.34 each)
5-12. GM Ivan Ivanisevic, GM Joel Benjamin, IM Nikoloz Managadze, IM Colomban Vitoux, Ian David Schoch, Christopher Wu, Benjamin W Krause 2284 and Scott Zimmerman ($600.00, top U2250) – 3.5 etc

GM Mikheil Kekelidze wins Long Island Chess Open

The Long Island Open took place on 16-18th March at the Holiday Inn Islip Airport in Ronkonkoma, USA. Grandmasters Mikheil Kekelidze, Tamaz Gelashvili, Sergey Kudrin and Joel Benjamin all finished at the top of the standings in the Open Section with 4 points but Kekelidze managed to take the title and the $100 bonus prize by virtue of the better tie-break.
Going into the final round Kudrin and Benjamin were half-point ahead of their nearest rivals but their draw on board one allowed Kekelidze and Gelashvili to catch them by winning their final round games against Yefim Treger and FM Nathan Resika respectively. Just few weeks ago Kekelidze won the 21st Annual Eastern Class.
Master section final standings:1-4. GM Mikheil Kekelidze ($780.50), GM Tamaz Gelashvili ($680.50), GM Sergey Kudrin ($680.50) and GM Joel Benjamin ($680.50) – 4.0
5-7. Michael H Bodek, Rawle A Allicock (*$302.00) and WGM Sarai Sanchez (*$302.00) – 3.5
