Anish Giri becomes youngest GM to win Reggio Emilia 2012

Hello everyone,
Congratulations to Grandmaster Anish Giri for winning the Reggio Emilia Chess Event 2012 and also setting the record of becoming the youngest-ever chess player to do so.
It wasn't all that straightforward though. American grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura, who had been leading all the way, went into self-destruct mode even tweeting that he was "running out of gas" towards the end. The last round saw leaders Nakamura and Morozevich lose.
In the women's section, Sopiko Guramishvili held on to a steady show beating Anna Sharevich to collect the top honours.
Final standings, men (3 points for a win, 1 for a draw): 1. Giri Anish 2714 NED – 16 2-4. Nakamura Hikaru 2758 USA, Morozevich Alexander 2762 RUS and Caruana Fabiano 2727 ITA – 15 5. Ivanchuk Vassily 2775 UKR – 12 6. Vitiugov Nikita 2729 RUS – 8

The chess news from Reggio Emilia in Round 7 is that Vassily Ivanchuk blundered away the point to Nikita Vitiugov but Hikaru Nakamura drew quickly with Fabiano Caruana and maintained his 4-point lead while Alexander Morozevich and Anish Giri also drew their game. The 54th Torneo di Capodannno is being held from December 27th-January 6th, 2012.

American grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura continued his good run at the 54th Reggio Emilia Chess Tournament in the sixth round on Monday. He beat Nikita Vitiugov extending his lead in the chess tournament. Meanwhile, Italian national champion Fabiano Caruana beat Alexander Morozevich and Vassily Ivanchuk went down fighting to Anish Giri.
In the women's section at the chess event, Sopiko Guramishvili beat Marina Brunello while Marianna Chierici – Maria De Rosa and Anna Sharevich – Iva Videnova chess matches were drawn.

Here are two nice chess video interviews from the ongoing Reggio Emilia Chess Tournament 2011 in Italy. Of course, before you watch these chess interviews, the latest updates after Round 4 is that Vassily Ivanchuk beat leader Alexander Morozevich in an exciting game. The other two games were decisive too. Nikita Vitiugov lost to Fabiano Caruana and Anish Giri lost to Hikaru Nakamura. The chess news from Italy is focused on the 54th Reggio Emilia Tournament that is into the third round now. In the third round, Fabiano Caruana lost to Vassily Ivanchuk giving the latter a shared second spot for now with Hikaru Nakamura. Here is the Caruana-Ivanchuk game.
Nakamura, on his part, drew his game with Alexander Morozevich who maintained his lead. The other game - between Nikita Vitiugov and Anish Giri - also ended in a draw.

The 54th edition of Reggio Emilia's Chess tournament - 54th Torneo di Capodanno - has begun. The main event includes current Italian national champion Fabiano Caruana, Vassily Ivanchuk, Alexander Morozevich, Hikaru Nakamura, Nikita Vitiugov and Anish Giri. The 54th edition of Reggio Emilia’s tournament also has a parallel chess event with three Italian chess stars competing against three strong WGMs from Eastern Europe.
The interesting first round saw two decisive games with Caruana blundering away the game to Morozevich in time trouble and Vitiugov losing to Nakamura. .
In the women's tournament, De Rosa beat Chierici, Marina Brunello lost to Guramishvili and Iva Videnova lost to Anna Sharevich. You can access the official website at this link.
Vugar Gashimov and Francisco Vallejo Pons drew their games in the final round to jointly win the 53rd Torneo de Capodanno in Reggio Emilia, Italy. The winner's trophy went to Gashimov because of better tie-break.

The seventh round at the 53rd Torneo di Capodanno in Reggio Emilia Italy saw the leader Vallejo Pons go down fighting to Vugar Gashimov. This allowed the latter to catch up with joint lead. Also, Ivanchuk lost his second game in a row which is a rarity for the grandmaster.

Grandmaster Francisco Vallejo Pons is in good form as he holds on to his lead at the 53rd Reggio Emilia Masters Chess Tournament in Italy. All the games were drawn in the fifth round except for Vassily Ivanchuk beating Michele Godena and moved to the second spot.
Meanwhile, the 1st Rapid 'Torneo di Capodanno Reggio Emilia' was held on January 2 with the participation of strong Italian and foreign players. The winner was WGM Yulia Kochetkova, second was FM Andrea Stella, a young Italian player, and 3rd place went to Italian women Olympic player IM Olga Zimina. All of them scored 6.5 out of 8.
