Russia wins European Senior Team Chess Championship

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2011

Hello everybody,

Russia has won the European Senior Team Chess Championship. Following them are Germany with Silver and Montenegro with Bronze.

Russia drew their last round quickly with Austria as they had already tallied to the top. They notched up a total of six wins in matches, three ties and a bagful of 15 match points.

IM Anatoli Shvedchikov from the winning team said, "The team has suffered changes this year because our regular member GM Vitaly Tseshkovsky is ill and we were forced to experiment with the roster. The competition was very strong, with the likes of Germany, Israel and Montenegro, but the experience from the Soviet chess school was valuable, we were persistent and we justified our reputation of the top seeded team."

"I am not surprised with the final standings", he continued, "There were many interesting games, we renewed and strengthened some old friendships and I am very pleased with this tournament. We have also initiated many friendly matches for the teams of Moscow and Russia."

In the match between two teams on the shared second place, Germany started off with two draws against Denmark 1 and then GM Wolfgang Uhlmann scored to give his team a lead. FM Clemens Werner later finished the job for the overall 3-1 victory and a silver medal for German team.

European Seniors Team Chess Championship in Greece from May 3

Chess blog for latest chess news and trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2011

Hello Everyone,

Are you a senior chess player in Europe? This should interest you. The European Chess Union, Greek Chess Federation and Chess Akademy of Thessaloniki are holding the 10th European Senior Championship from May 3 to May 11 in Thessaloniki, Greece.

The event is open to any number of teams from each federation of the ECU. The teams may represent a national federation or any regional structure of a national federation. Players having a FIDE rating may only represent a team coming from the federation given in their FIDE rating card (FIDE rating list). All the players must come from the same federation; however this rule is waived if all the members of the team are unrated.

Each team consists of four players; in addition one reserve player may be nominated. A provisional naming of the players and the substitute has to be given together with the registration of the team. Changes in the team can be made until the captains meeting takes place. Reserve players are only allowed to play board 4. Entitled to participate are men who have reached the age of 60 years and women who have reached the age of 50 years, by 1st January 2011.

You can find more details at the www.fide.com website. Meanwhile, here is a nice video of Thessaloniki we picked up from YouTube. Enjoy.
