Asian Chess Federation gives GM Eugene Torre 'Lifetime Achievement Award'

Hello chess blog friends, the Asian Chess Federation has honored Grandmaster Eugene Torre with a 'Lifetime Achievement' Award. GM Torre is the first Grandmaster from Asia. The Philippine Star has a nice profile of the Grandmaster.

“I am humbled, happy and very grateful to receive this award,” the 62-year-old Torre, who is Asia’s first grandmaster, told The STAR in a text message yesterday.

The Asian Chess Federation, headed by Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifah Al Nahyan, held the first annual Asian Chess Excellence Awards last June 25 at the Danat Hotel in the United Arab Emirates.

Torre’s contributions to Philippine chess are unmatched.

At 22, he became Asia’s first grandmaster following a silver medal finish in the 1974 Chess Olympiad in Nice, France. Two years later, in a tournament in Manila, he defeated then world champion Anatoly Karpov.

Torre went on to lead Philippine chess to greater heights, and helped promote the sport in the Asian region under the guidance of then FIDE president Florencio Campomanes of the Philippines.
Sportshub ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1

He took part in 20 Chess Olympiads, 19 of which were consecutive, sharing the coveted record with Hungary’s Lajos Portisch. When the 41st Olympiad is held in Norway in August, Torre will man Board 4 for the Philippines.

“This recognition has further acknowledged the contributions we Filipinos, foremost of whom was Florencio Campomanes, have done for the promotion of chess in Asia,” said Torre.

The top officials of the ACF, including deputy president Casto Abundo of the Philippines, said the award is “in recognition of his (Torre) success as Asia’s first grandmaster and his many victories and world records.”

Some other awards included

- Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao received the “Chess Patron of the Year” award “in recognition of his inspiration to sports fans around the world and his support for the Asian Continental Championships inspiring millions of youths to learn chess.”

- Ruler of Sharjah, H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi was awarded the “Man of the Year” for his “generous donation” that helped build the biggest chess club in the world.

- Viswanathan Anand of India was named “Player of the Year”

- Reigning Women's World Champion Hou Yifan of China was “Woman Player of the Year.”

- GM Yu Yangyi received the “Best Junior Player of the Year” for ruling the World Junior Championship and Asian Indoor Games.

Hello everyone,

Chinese Grandmaster Yu Yangyi has won the Asian Continental Chess Tournament 2014 in Sharjah.

In the Open section top four games were drawn, in the last round, which was sufficient for GM Yu Yangyi to keep the first place and claim the gold medal with 7,0/9 points.

There followed four players on the shared second place with 6,5 points each. After breaking the tie, GM Adhiban B of India is awarded with the silver medal and former Asian champion GM Ni Hua of China got the bronze.

World Junior Chess 2013: Yu Yangyi of China, Alexandra Goryachkina of Russia Crowned Champions

Chess Blog for Daily Chess News and Trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2013

Hi everyone,

FIDE World Junior Chess Championships 2013 for boys & girls under 20 were held in Kocaeli, Turkey, from 12th to 27th September 2013.

In the Open section top-seeded GM Yu Yangyi of China drew GM Vidit Santosh Gujrathi (India) in the final round to claim the title of World Junior Chess Champion.

Last year champion Alexander Ipatov (Turkey) defeated IM Aleksandar Indjic (Serbia) but this was sufficient only for the second place and silver medal.

Yangyi collected 11/13 points, while Ipatov has 10,5 points. A full point behind Ipatov are Gujrathi and Jorge Cori (Peru), who beat SP Sethuraman. Gujrathi won the bronze medal on better tie-break.

In the Girls section Russian WGM Alexandra Goryachkina won the last round game against WIM Paula Andrea Rodriguez Rueda (Colombia) to convincingly take the title of World Junior Champion with 10,5/13 points.

WIM Zhansaya Abdumalik (Kazakhstan) held the higher rated WGM Padmini Rout (India) to finish clear second on 9,5 points and claim the silver medal.

After the loss of Rodriguez Rueda, there was a fearless battle for the bronze medal. WIM Hejazipour Mitra (Iran) and WGM Alina Kashlinskaya (Russia) were victorious against Indonesia's Medina Warda Aulia and Sihite Chelsie Monica, respectively, to share the third place with 9,0 points each. Kashlinskaya won the bronze medal on higher tie-break. Former World Champion Garry Kasparov attended the closing ceremony.

Indonesia Chess Open: Yu Yangyi Wins on Tiebreak

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012

Hi everyone,

The latest chess news from the Indonesia Chess Open 2012 is that Yu Yangyi edged out Li Chao on tie-break to take the trophy on Wednesday. The final round of the 2nd Indonesia Open Chess Championship saw Ivan Sokolov opt for the exchange variation of the Slav and attempt to squeeze out a win against tournament leader Yu Yangyi who was happy with a draw and with accurate defence he easily got it, according to a Chessdom report and the press release.

GM Yu Yangyi

On the other board played on the stage, second placed defending champion Li Chao also faced the Slav defence but opted instead to play the mainline. His efforts finally paid off when Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son made a mistake after holding the balance for much of the game.

Li’s win meant that he ended in a tie with Yu for first place with 7.5/9 but still lost out to the compatriot on tiebreaks.

In third place half a point behind on 6.5/9 is Sokolov who is joined by Vladislav Tkachiev who drew Viorel Iordachescu, Sergey Fedorchuk who out-maneuvered Ehsan Ghaem Maghami, Surya Sekhar Ganguly who beat Nguyen Duc Hoa to spoil his GM norm hopes, Dimitri Bocharov who outplayed Haridas Pascua, Oleg Korneev who won quickly when Lu Shanglei’s speculative play in an Evans Gambit went horribly wrong, and Marat Dzhumaev beating Merab Gagunasvili after the later lost a piece when grabbing a poisoned pawn. Further back on six points were Nguyen, Viorel Iordachescu, Lou Yiping and Avetik Grigoryan.
GM Lu Shanglei took the prize for best junior while WGM Pham Le Thao Nguyen was the best woman player.

In a field with 33 Grandmasters, there were many opportunities for title norms and these were achieved by Wei Yi (GM Norm), Haridas Pascua, Pham Le Thao Nguyen, Wan Yunguo, Gui Qi, and Hamdani Rudin (IM Norm).

Final standings:
1 GM Yu Yangyi CHN 2651 – 7.5

World Junior Chess in Athens R4: Only Yu Yangyi, Alexander Ipatov with Perfect Score

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012

Hi everyone,

The latest chess news from the World Junior Chess Championships 2012 in Athens, Greece, via Chessdom, is that GM Yu Yangyi and GM Alexander Ipatov are the only players who are leading with a perfect score after four rounds. Seeded 2nd and 6th respectively, they now lead the championship 1/2 points ahead of competition.
GM Ipatov employed a temporary piece sacrifice against GM Baron Tal to get solid initiative and closed the game in a convincing manner. GM Yu Yangyi waited patiently for a mistake by his opponent GM Jorge Cori in time trouble to conclude the game with a full point. The chasing pack shares the 3rd place with 3,5/4 and includes IM Sahaj Grover, GM Samvel Ter-Sahakyan, GM Salem A R Saleh, FM Wei Yi, GM Aleksandr Shimanov, and GM Nils Grandelius.

GM Yu Yangyi
In a multitude of surprising results FM Stef Soors defeated GM Niclas Huschenbeth, FM Michael Kleinman won against his compatriot IM Eric Hansen, the untitled Spyridon Naoum held to a draw IM Evandro Amorim Barbosa, FM Aman Hambleton drew with IM Ulvi Bajarani, IM Leandro Krysa lost to the untitled Ioannis Stathopoulos.

The rating favorite GM Ding Liren was stunned yet another time, this round he was held to a draw by GM Yilmaz Mustafa. Both are now 1,5 points behind the leaders, sharing the position with 18 more players. However, with 9 more rounds to go the medals and top positions will be up for grabs until the very end.

The Open section of the World Junior Chess Championship presented excellent chess to the audience today, with 50 from the 65 boards finishing with a decisive result.

The girls section of the World Junior Chess Championship was close to having a sole leader. In difficult time trouble WGM Nastassia Ziaziulkina could not score a full point against WIM Irina Bulmaga with the black pieces. The other leaders before the start of the round, WGM Guo Qi and IM Anastasia Bodnaruk, agreed to a draw. Now all of them share the first place together with the only winner from the chasing pack – WGM Aleksandra Goryachkina.

They are closely followed by a large group of players at 1/2 points distance – WGM Jovana Vojinovic, WFM Klaudia Kulon, WGM Alina Kashlinskaya, WIM Meri Arabidze, Wang Jue, WGM Deysi Cori, WGM Mona Khaled, WIM Monica Sihite Chelsie, WFM Aulia Medina Warda, Hanna-Marie Klek, WFM Irina Petrova, and Zoi Iordanidou.

Just like in the boys/open section, Round 4 turned out to be extremely combative for the girls. Except the top boards, the girls competition saw only 3 more draws, all other games finishing with decisive results. You can find lots of photos and information at the official website.

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012

Hi everyone,

The world junior chess championships currently on in Athens, Greece, witnessed strong play on Day 3 as well. Salem A R Saleh (UAE) defeated the local representative Antonios Pavlidis in a model game from the black side of the Sicilian Sveshnikov, while the bronze medalist from 2011 WJCC Grover Sahaj won the Indian derby against Debashis Das. The former World U12 champion Wei Yi from China (2418) defeated another higher rated player, Grigoriy Oparin (2488) from Russia, to maintain the perfect score.

GM Samvel Ter-Sahakyan

Top seeded players Ding Liren, Yaroslav Zherebukh, Richard Rapport and Alexandr Shimanov recovered from yesterday’s setbacks and signed confident victories.

The defending champion WGM Deysi Cori (2413) played another marathon game, this time against the reigning Belarus champion and 9th seed WGM Nastassia Ziaziulkina. The endgame appeared to be equal but some precision was required. However, Cori erred and allowed white to set a Lucena bridge.

Jovana Vojinovic drew Alina Kashlinskaya, while Irina Bulmaga continued the winning row and defeated Lisa Schut.

WGM Guo Qi won rather quickly after her opponent Medina Warda Aulia forgot the Queen in the danger zone.

World Junior Chess Off to an Exciting Start

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012

Hi everyone,

The second round of the 2012 World Junior Chess Championships saw the first major upsets in the Open section as the top players started dropping the points, according to a comprehensive news report in Chessdom. The former World U12 champion (won on the Greek soil in 2010) and World School Champion in 2008 (Thessaloniki, also Greece) Wei Yi from China (2418) stunned the 4th-seeded GM Richard Rapport from Hungary (2605) with black pieces.

Alessio Valsecchi continued playing in excellent shape that brought him the 2nd place in the prestigious Kavala Open and defeated the 3rd-seeded GM Yaroslav Zherebukh.

GM Yu Yangyi

Gao Rui took a draw from his compatriot Ding Liren, the top seeded player in this section. Ryan Rhys Griffiths (IRL 2362) defeated Conrad Holt (USA 2498), while Firat Burak (TUR 2423) held GM Alexandr Shimanov (RUS 2596) to a draw.

Top seed in the Girls section IM Anastasia Bodnaruk (2414) did not allow any surprises and duly signed the 2nd victory. The defending champion WGM Deysi Cori (2413) had a much more difficult task as the former World U12 champion WFM Iulija Osmak put up a strong resistance, but the experience eventually prevailed and Cori won in the time trouble. Bogdana Nonkovic could not repeat the excellent feat from round 1 as she lost against WFM Medina Warda Aulia, but Ana Ivekovic from the neighboring Croatia shocked the local hope WIM Ekaterini Pavlidou.
