U-16 Chess Olympiad in Istanbul: Russia Wins Gold!

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012

Hi everyone,

The young Russian team has won the Under-16 Chess Olympiad being held in Istanbul. The results came down to the last round as Iran dropped 1,5 points to Poland, while Russia managed to score 3,5 points against Armenia to move to the top!

The second seed Iran tried really hard but had to settle for the silver medal. For the third place India was a huge favourite before the round and a 2,5-1,5 win against Australia-A was more than enough to secure the bronze. Even though most of the attention has been focused on the 40th Chess Olympiad, this event turned out to be exciting as well with the young chess players fighting for each point.

Russia was represented by IM Urii Eliseev (2480), FM Maksim Chigaev (2462), IM Vladislav Artemiev (2476), Darsen Sanzhaev (2335) and Maksim Vavulin (2292). The first special prize was given to the youngest player of the tournament, Moazaz Dhahir Habeeb (born on November 4, 2003) from Iran.

The final standings and individual board results can be found at the official website.
