Legendary Chess Players' Team Beats Geneva Chess Club; Spraggett, Korchnoi, Ribli Top-Scorers <-- Chess Video Reports

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012

Hi everyone,

The Geneva Chess Club organised a cool chess match from August 4-10: Club members' team took on legends (all world chess championship candidates)! Viktor Korchnoi, Zoltan Ribli and Kevin Spraggett all top-scored for the legends to win 33-17! French chess magazine Europe-Echecs has a detailed report, videos and photos. Here are some of the cool videos. Guess which former world chess champion attended the ninth round as a surprise visit? Lars Rindlisbacher completed its first International Master norm with the result by 4.0 points on 10 against an average of 2544 elo. You can also find a nice post and details by Kevin Spraggett on his chess blog.

Play Chess With Anatoly Karpov Through the Tour de France from June 30!

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012

Hi everyone,

Anatoly Karpov | Photos © Claude Baranton

This is combining chess and cycling! Chess enthusiasts are invited to play a chess game which starts at the same time as the Tour de France against former world chess champion Anatoly Karpov. Karpov will visit the Tour de France on July 21 at the conclusion of the race at Champs-Elysées in Paris. But, before that, throughout the duration of the Tour de France, via the website Europe Echecs, he would play a chess match against the 'rest of the world' team.

Everyone who registers gets to play and vote for the best chess move for 24 hours via the Internet for the move to be played against Karpov."If I've never been to the Tour de France. Though, I have watched it on television. I see many similarities between chess and cycling. You need discipline and endurance. I can give one example of a chess match - the world chess championship against Viktor Korchnoi which lasted over two months and 32 games," said Karpov.

The Tour de France website is here. You can register for the chess game at this link

Korchnoi's wit and French team's sportsmanship - that's what chess is all about!

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2011

Hi everyone,

Here are two incidents from the European Team Chess Championship 2011 currently on in Greece. One is about sportsmanship and the other is about legendary Korchnoi wit.

The first is the Viktor Korchnoi incident. We found it on www.chess-news.ru (Russian). The legendary grandmaster is playing on board two for Switzerland. In round four, he reached the above position, as Black, against the Welsh player Tim Kett. White, who is to play, is obviously dead lost. Kett, however, sat staring at the position or glancing at the board next to him, for some time.

Eventually, Viktor could contain himself no longer, and pointed out to his opponent that it was his move. Kett continued to ponder some more, and then resigned. Korchnoi’s reaction was “That is the correct move!”

France's offer of draw

Vugar Gashimov of Azerbaijan fell ill during the Round 4 match, after which France’s team offered to tie the games on all boards. Gashimov is better now but there, we have another incident of sportsmanship. That is what chess is all about never mind the occasional stupid incident of cheating etc.

Round 4: Azerbaijan-France Before the match!
