Medieval Chess Set - Impressive, Creative Hobby Project
Hello Chess Blog friends,
We were just sent these lovely photos by MarvelStanley via Facebook. A reddit user uploaded these amazing pictures of a medieval chess set created by his mother. Here are the photos and you can read more at viralnova.
The project took Pamela about 6 months to complete and it’s currently sitting in her basement waiting for a gallery. Each piece is hollow, and as such are lighter than they look. The tallest king is around 6″.
Pamela's official website is pmummy.com where she states that she is enchanted by the human form that also inspires her.

Bernice and Floyd Sarisohn donated February’s featured set to the World Chess Hall of Fame. The Sarisohns share a passion for collecting chess sets, which began when Bernice gave one to Floyd as an engagement gift. In the years since, their devotion led them to be active members of Chess Collectors International, an organization founded in 1984 that brings together lovers of artistic chess sets and chess memorabilia. Their generous loans and donations have allowed the World Chess Hall of Fame to share a variety of wonderful sets with our patrons, states the website of the World Chess Hall of Fame.
Do you live in the Saint Louis metropolitan area and have a chess set with a great story? Submit it for inclusion in the Featured Chess Set project! This program highlights chess sets with interesting backgrounds borrowed from chess lovers and fans of the Hall of Fame. Featured chess sets are displayed for a period of one month at the World Chess Hall of Fame.

We don't get enough of these theme chess sets and chess videos. So, here's a nice Renaissance chess set from Austria showcased in a video by AncientChess.com. "For a long time Austria has been the center of figurative chess sets. Here is an especially elegant Austrian design, created in casting stone. Note the unusually passive stance of the king, the madonna-like "virgin" queen, and the full portraits of unadorned horses in this set. A set that points to the Renaissance artistic ideals, and reveres nature as much as the society of men."

Capture Chess Set - Interesting Industrial Design Video

Hi everyone,
We found this very interesting chess set video. The set, which the designer calls 'Capture' comprises simple aluminum-milled pieces. The pieces are designed to stack on top of one another. The idea is that whenever you take an opponent’s piece, instead of casting it off the board, you simply stack it under your own. As the game develops, the most effective pieces grow taller and taller, adding a new layer of data to the board.
Basically, Kislev’s pieces let players visualize a small but not insignificant bit of their match’s history by stretching into the z-axis.The project was born out of an assignment at the Holon Institute of Technology, in Israel, where Kislev is an industrial design student.

We see chess everywhere and so do Chess Blog readers. Here's a nice theme set post sent to us by reader Elvina Schenko of Berlin. This Batman chess set priced at $795.00 comes with a special feature: A press of the Batman symbol illuminates 50 LED lights encircling the clear playing surface that lights the board, the Gotham cityscape underneath and projects a Bat-Signal to the sky. No detail has been overlooked in this ultimate Batman collector's chess set. The joker, Catwoman, Riddler and penguin battle Batman, Robin, Batgirl and commissioner Gordon. The oversized board measures 20 inches in length on each side. Playing pieces measure between 2 1/2 to 5 1/2 inches tall and are made in fine pewter and diecast metal.

Stackable Chess Set - Talking of Chess Design!

Industrial designer Neora Zigler wanted to update chess pieces for modern production techniques, leg behind the old style, which was designed to be turned on a lathe. Zigler said she tinkered with several ideas before thinking of the modern stackable chess set.
In designing the pieces, she looked to other stacking objects for inspiration. The designer said she was focused on making the pieces "simple but not minimalist and not abstract." The stackable pieces, she points out, could also allow for more compact packaging. You can read further here.

Typograpic Chess Set - Would You Play With It?

Hi everyone,
We found this neat new chess set on Gizmodo! We haven't found this concept used in a chess set before. This typographic chess set, based around the Champion font by Hoefler Frere Jones, brings elegant simplicity to the game with each piece assuming the form of its initial. It's almost too pretty to play.
Developed by Jim Sutherland of Hat-Trick Design, each piece is laser cut from 25mm acrylic, and they range in size: the King towers over the board at 50mm tall, while the Pawn stands at just 30mm. The Knight, sharing its initial with the King, is represented by an adjoined KT.
Sadly, only 50 of the limited edition sets are going to be made, which means it will cost you $450. Depending on how much you like typography and chess, that may or may not be worth it.

A similar thing happened to Elina Klimets who has written a lovely piece on the exhibition 'The World of Chess' by Gregory Pashkov. All we can say is the chess sets are just so luxurious and will take your breath away. The themes include Russian-Turkish war, carnival, etc. This is Pashkov's his first exhibition in 20 years!
