Hello chess blog friends, ready to play chess in Spain The first chess festival hosted by Sunway Playa Golf Sitges Hotel & Spa from December 13th to December 21st, 2014, with a total of 19.700 € in cash prizes to be distributed among over 100 players.
Sunway Playa Golf & Spa is the site of the 2014 Sunway Sitges International Chess Festival. Located on the Promenade of Sitges (40 km. south of Barcelona), the hotel is situated in front of the sea and beside the golf club, in the residential quarter of Sitges.
The hotel has 2 swimming pools (one of them heated), a gym, terraces, jacuzzi, two restaurants in front of the sea – the only ones on the promenade of Sitges directly overlooking the Mediterranean sea – convention centre, car park and inside garage, etc. It also has a small but very useful supermarket for its guests. The hotel also has a Spa and a beauty center equipped with massage rooms, saunas and steam baths with spectacular views, etc. There are obviously multiple halls where chess matches will take place during the festival.
All apartments and rooms are air-conditioned, have satellite TV, phone and free 24 h. Internet connection (wireless and DSL), and are prepared to try to make the guest relax and feel at home while enjoying his stay in Sitges. Almost all rooms and apartments have a great sea views or golf and sea views.

Calling all u-2200s for Chess in Spain Sept 18-28!
Hello chess friends, the Chess Club Centro Goya on the island of Gran Canaria (Spain) is hosting the first International Chess Tournament Centro Goya from September 18-28, 2014, at the Hotel Cristina Las Palmas, five stars, in the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain), according to an update via FIDE.
This is a tournament for players under 2200 FIDE elo points and with prize money of 20.000 EUR, which will be distributed in more than 60 prizes.

GM Julen Luis Arizmendi Martinez is Spanish Chess Champion 2012

The 77th Individual Chess Championship of Spain was held from 29th September to 7th October at the Hotel Gloria Palace de San Agustín on Gran Canaria. A total of 124 players competed in the 9-round Swiss event, including eight Grandmasters, according to the chess news site www.chessdom.com.
Grandmasters Julen Luis Arizmendi and Miguel Munoz Pantoja won their last round games to finish the tournament on shared first place with 7,5 points each. Arizmendi is declared champion on better tie-break criteria.

GM Oleg Korneev took the bronze thanks to the superior tie-break in the group of players with 7 points each. Munoz Pantoja (reigning Catalan champion) and Korneev have recently switched to Spanish chess federation from Peru and Russia respectively.
Also on 7 points is the last year champion Alvar Alonso Rosell, who this time took the award for the best U20 player. IM David Anton Guijarro is fifth overall and best U18 player.
The local chess fans are delighted that their own WGM Sabrina Vega Gutierrez claimed the top women prize.

India “A” scored a stunning 2.5 – 1.5 win over Spain, moving into third spot with 9 match points after the sixth round of the TATA 14th IBCA Chess Olympiad for the Blind 2012 at Hotel Le Royal Meridien, Chennai on Friday. Despite the loss, Spain shares the lead along with Russia at 10 match points. Sharing the third spot were India “A”, Russia and Ukraine at 9 match points. Further behind were Germany, United Kingdom and Serbia at 8 match points.
Fortune favored the hosts, as Kishan Gangolli got the first point when Palacios Perez Manuel’s mobile phone went off in the second board. The Laws of Chess specify, “if any mobile phone or other electronic means of communication in the playing venue produces a sound, the player shall lose the game”.

Overcoming their early deficit Spain equalized scoring in the top board through Desanjose Candalija Eduardo. Darpan Inani drew on the third board, leaving the match poised at 1.5 -1.5 each. All hinged on the fourth board, where the fortunes fluctuated and finally Makwana Ashvin capitalized on his extra pawn to clinch the issue in favor of India “A”. Top seed Russia came back strongly scoring a 3-1 win over Germany. Russians drew both the blacks, scoring over Germans with white pieces. The match win over Germany takes Russia to the top of the table with 10 match points along with Spain.
Fourth seed Ukraine swept United Kingdom 3.5 – 0.5, with International Master Colin Crouch offering the lone resistance in the top board. Serbia improved their chances scoring over Poland in the fourth table. The crucial win takes Serbia to 8 match points. LIVE webcast of the games can be viewed at the official website
