Strong Chess Rapid comes to Riga at Latvian Railway Museum March 28-30

Latest chess tournament update via FIDE: The Riga Chess Federation is going to host the Latvian Railway Open, one of the strongest rapid chess opens in the World. 

The tournament will be held on 28-30 March, 2014, at the Latvian railway museum in Riga, Latvia. The tournament will be held in three groups A, B and C.

The festival will feature leading Latvian grandmasters as well as very strong foreign grandmasters and chess lovers from all around the world.

Tournament A is 14 round Swiss with the time control 15 minutes for each player plus 6 seconds increment for each move. First round on 28th of March 2014 at 17.30 hours, last round on 30th of March at 15.00 hours.

The total prize fund is 10000 EUR.

Main prizes: EUR 1. 1400; 2. 1000; 3. 700; 4. 600; 5. 550; 6. 500; 7. 450; 8. 400; 9. 350; 10. 300; 11. 250; 12-16. 200; 17-22. 150.
There are also special prizes for best women, Latvian players, veterans, juniors and elo groups.

Tournament B is reserved mainly for players rated 1875-2324. Games will be played March 28-30.
Time control is 12 minutes plus 5 seconds per move; Swiss system; 12 rounds. The prize fund will be 80% of all entry fees.

Tournament C is reserved for players rated less than 1875. Games will be played March. 28-30.
Time control is 12 minutes plus 5 seconds per move; Swiss system; 12 rounds. The prize fund will be 75% of all entry fees. The entry fee is 20 Euros.

Riga Chess - GM Jan Markos Gets Clear First

Here is the latest chess news via Chessdom about the 2nd International Chess Festival Riga Technical University Open that took place August 6-12 at the Riga Technical University. The Festival was organized by the Riga Technical University and Latvian Chess Federation.

 

The Tournament A was a 9-round Swiss event with 140 participants from 26 countries. Slovakian champion GM Jan Markos outplayed the higher rated opposition to take a clear first place with 7.5 points. The Tournament B was a 7-round Swiss event with 110 players. Pavel Shashnev from Russia won this group with 6.5 points. Standings bellow. On the evening of the final day, 12th August, a Blitz tournament with 116 players was held. After 11 rounds of play, Grandmasters Alexandr Fier, Samuel Shankland and Meelis Kanep shared the first place with 9 points each.

Riga Chess Open Begins in Latvia on August 6

The second Chess Open at the Riga Technical University will be held from August 6 – 12 at the main building of the Riga Technical University in Latvia. The chess festival actually includes two classical time control tournaments and one blitz chess tournament. 

Riga Technical University Chess Tournament in 2011

GM Alberto David won the first Riga Technical Chess Open in August 2011. A total of 138 chess players from 17 countries had taken part in the main tournament and includd eight Grandmasters and seven International Masters.

The guaranteed prize fund for the second edition of the chess festival is 5250 LVL (7500 EUR). First prize of the tournament A is guaranteed to be 1000 LVL (1410 EUR), special prizes for women, juniors, seniors and rating prizes.

Tournament A

Swiss System, 9 rounds, August 6-12, open for all players. The tournament will have GM, IM, WGM and WIM norms. Already, 106 participants from 28 countries have registered for the event including 24 GMs.

Tournament B

Swiss System, 7 rounds August 9-12, open for players with ELO below 2150.

Early entries for the ELO tournaments and accommodation requests should be sent before 15th of July. Special prices for hotels are available till this date, too. More detailed information about schedule, accommodation and registration can be found in regulations attached to this mail or in the official homepage of the tournament.

The festival can also be combined with annual Latvian chess festival “Liepajas Rokade 2012” that will take place in Liepaja (~200km from Riga) on August 2 – 5.
