Chinese GM Li Chao wins Reykjavik Chess Open 2014; Harika Dronavalli Best Woman Player

Chinese Grandmaster Li Chao (2700) has  won the Reykjavik Chess Open at the Harpa Music and Conference Hall in Reykjavik. Li Chao scored 8,5 points over 10 rounds of play. Helgi Ólafsson (2546) was the leading Icelandic player in the joint 2nd-5th list with 8 points and joined by Robin Van Kampen, Eric Hansen and Eduards Rozentalis who all had a fine tournament.

In the final round, Prime Minister Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson took time out of his busy schedule to execute the first move in the Hansen-Olafsson game. It was also the Prime Minister's 39th birthday and him showing up shows how prestigious chess is in Iceland, states an official report from the tournament. The closing ceremony was hosted by Björn Þorfinnsson. 

Trausti Björnsson,Friðrik Ólafsson og Jón Kristinsson were honored yesterday as they participated in the first Reykjavik Open 50 years ago in 1964.

The Egyptian Mohamed Ezat was the only one got get a GM norm but the Danish IM Simon-Bekker Jensen was also painfully closed and frankly deserved one! Five players made IM norms en they were the young Indian Chitambaram Vr. Aravindh, Tatev Abrahamyan, Daniel Cawdery, Brede Kvisvik and Lenka Ptácníková.

Reykjavik Chess Open 50th Anniversary: 50% Discount for Groups, 1997-and-later born

The chess wave is sweeping the planet. Catching on the wave is another exciting chess tournament - the Reykjavik Chess Open will be held March 4-12th in the beautiful beautiful Harpa concert hall by the Reykjavik harbour.

This is going to be the 50th edition of the Reykjavik Chess Open and will include several parallel chess fun events including a photo-op and book signing by former World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov.

The tournament will be played over 10-rounds of Swiss system. Top seeded players include GM Arkadij Naiditsch, GM Li Chao B, GM Ferenc Berkes, GM Richard Rapport, GM Amin Bassem, and GM Erwin L’Ami. Top prizes are 5.000€ / 2.000€ / 1.250€ / 800€ / 600€ etc. There are also prizes for best women, juniors and elo categories.
