Cops vs Kids Chess at NYPD Headquarters!

Hello chess blog friends, a nice chess event this -- Cops and kids squared off Saturday for an epic chess tournament at NYPD headquarters! The five-hour first-time event, sponsored by nonprofit Chess in the Schools, drew Police Commissioner Bill Bratton, 50 uniformed volunteer cops and 150 city school kids, reports the New York Daily News.

“I was kind of scared because I’m still a beginner and I’m playing these big cops,” said Zoe Marengo-Rivera, 10, of the Lower East Side, who won three games against the Finest.

“There was one that was really good, but I caught him off guard by making all these weird moves and I checkmated him in about 40 seconds. We both burst out laughing.”

Sgt. Jahmel Felipe, a school safety cop who has played chess since he was 14, managed to win four games. Students Kenneth Martin, Nileidy Bello, Vincente Gomez and Bao Tran took top honors.
