Dhrubatara Cup International Chess in Nepal Dec 24
Hello chess blog friends, a popular chess open tournament in Nepal, the fourth edition of the Dhrubatara Cup International Chess Tournament from December 24-29. The event is being organised by the Dhrubatara Sporting Club of Damak, Jhapa.
The schedule will be over nine rounds based on Swiss league format of FIDE. About $1000 will go to the winner along with cash prizes for at least 45 other players. About 150 players from different 10 countries are expected to participate in the six-day tournament. Manish Hamal is the defending champion, while Indian players won the titles of the first two editions.
The annual chess tournament is one of the most popular chess events in the region particularly as it adds to the Nepal chess calendar where chess is just developing.

Nepal Chess News: Tough Fights at NECOS Open

KATHMANDU: Top players suffered shock defeats as former Nepal national chess champion Punya Man Karmacharya was in the pack of 12 to share third round lead in the NECOS second Nationwide FIDE Rating Chess Tournament with three points here at the Multipurpose Martial Arts Centre today.
Top seeded Badri Lal Nepali, 2131-rated former Nepal champion, lost his third round match against 1947-rated Bhagawati Prasad Sharma, while 1945-rated Prakash Nepal defeated 2050-rated another former Nepal champion Surbir Lama. The shock defeats of former Nepal champions continued when 1974-rated Naveen Tandukar suffered a loss at the hands of 1688-rated Bikram Dhwoj Shrestha.
Defending champion Ganesh Man Duwal suffered back-to-back defeat after the 2002-rated veteran lost to 1761-rated Deepak Maharjan in the second round before being beaten by 1574-rated Mohan Singh Pradhan in the third.
Sharing the third-round lead with Punya Man were Bhagawati, Prakash, Madan Krishna Kayastha (2092), Krishna Thapa (2022), Niraj Niraula (2012), Sudip Bajracharya (1917), Kamal Shrestha (1881), Rajan Puri (1977), Bibek Thing (1881), Dharam Bahadur Lama (1974), Purna Raj Khadka (1969) and Bhuwaneshwor Chaudhary (1777). FIDE Master Bilam Lal Shrestha missed on a chance to share the lead and was at the second spot with 2.5 points after playing a draw with 1820-rated Laba Kumar Shrestha in the second round.

Nepal Chess News: Golden Gate College Wins National Team Event

Golden Gate College won the title of Manamohan Memorial Third National Team Club Chess Championship on Wednesday and secured berth in the Asian Team Chess Championship to be held in the Philippines in four months´ time.
Golden Gate defeated Lalitpur District Chess Association 2.5-1.5 in the final to win the team championship. Saurav Kherdekar of Golden Gate defeated Badri Lal Nepali of Lalitpur. Likewise, Madan Krishna Kayastha of Golden Gate edged past Rabindra Shakya in the final. Surbir Lama of Golden Gate and Sachin Maharjan of Lalitpur played a draw while Ratna Byanjankar of Lalitpur outclassed Niraj Niraula of Golden Gate.
Winner Golden Gate received Rs 50,000 while Lalitpur got Rs 30,000 along with trophies.
Machhindra Club finished third in the championship defeating Battisputali Youth Club 2.5-1.5. Shyam Shrestha of Machhindra defeated Himal Lama of Battisputali and his teammate Rajan Puri upset Prakash Nepal. Bibek Thing of Machhindra and Prachanda Malakar of Battisputali played a draw. Purushottam Chaulagain of Battisputali beat Bijay Dangol in the play-off.
Machhindra received Rs 20,000 while Battisputali got Rs 10,000. Former Deputy Prime Minister Bharat Mohan Adhikari gave away prizes to the winners. Altogether 17 teams had participated in the championship organized by Manamohan Chess Academy.

Nepal Chess: Badri Lal Nepali Wins Kailali Open Rating Tournament

We are always happy to share chess news from Nepal. The country has been slowly and steadily trying to promote chess in the country. The latest tournament news is from Dhangadhi where former Nepal national chess champion Badri Lal Nepali has won the Kailali Open Rating Chess Tournament despite being held to a draw by U-19 national champion Rupesh Jaiswal in his final round match.
Badri finished with 7.5 points from nine matches to remain unbeaten and earn the title that was assured after his closest contender Madan Krishna Kayastha was held to a draw by Prachanda Man Malakar. Madan ended up second with seven points. Badri won $500 and Madan received $300.
Dhan Bahadur Bogati finished third on progressive point after he was tied on seven points with Madan. Dhan Bahadur defeated Saurav Prasad Pradhan. FIDE Master Manish Hamal, Rupesh, former Nepal champion Naveen Tandukar, Purushottam Chaulagain and Prachanda Man accumulated 6.5 points and rounded up in the top eight finishes on progressive point.
Niraj Niraula and Saurav finished ninth and 10th respectively with six points apiece. Tirtha Bahadur BK (below-1900) and Prakash Ojha (below-1700) were declared the best in their respective rating categories, while Rudra Khaniya finished first among the Far-west players. Tekraj Upadhyaya, Kabiram Tamang, Dinesh Thapa and Tika Dutta Dahal claimed top four finishes in unrated category.
Kritika Ojha was best among the women participants and Nara Bahadur Bohora took veterans’ top prize. Mahesh Khadka and Sujan Dahal finished first and second respectively in the U-15 age group, while Shiva Poudel and Suresh Chand were the best local players.
