Malaysia Intercollegiate (Chinese) Chess Championships 2014 Begin
Hello chess friends, Xinhua news agency reports from Kuala Lumpur - the capital of Malaysia - that the The 4th Confucius Institute Cup Malaysia intercollegiate Chinese chess competition sponsored by University of Malaya began in the city on Sunday. The competition attracted more than 400 chess players throughout Malaysia. This competition sets up five group events including the primary school group, middle school group, high middle school group, women group and adults group. The champions of each group would form Malaysia chess delegation and visit Guangzhou chess institute in September. They would have several competitions with Chinese players.
Director of the Chinese Embassy Cultural and Education Office in Malaysia, Gao Wei said Chinese chess has a long history and a richness content. It is the essence of Chinese history, culture and wisdom. It would improve the players’ memory, thinking and logical reasoning.
Chen Zhong, Chinese director of Confucius institute, University of Malaya, mentioned that the institute has two purposes: To promote Chinese language and Chinese culture. The institute would hold more similar events in the future.
The Malaysia intercollegiate chess competition is an annual competition which started at 2011. It is one of the highly participated chess competition in Malaysia.

Here's some nice chess tournament news for fans looking for an event in South-East Asia. The FIDE-rated Selangor Chess Tournament will be held at DAT Chess Connections, 4th floor, Wilayah Complex, Kuala Lumpur from 26th April to 1st May.

27th April (Saturday: Weekend) Round 2 @ 9.30am,
27th April (Saturday: Weekend) Round 3 @ 3pm,
28th April (Sunday: Weekend) Round 4 @ 9.30am,
28th April (Sunday: Weekend) Round 5 @ 3pm,
29th April (Monday) Round 6 @ 7pm,
30th April (Tuesday) Round 7 @ 7pm,
1st May (Wednesday: Public Holiday) Round 8 @ 9am,
1st May (Wednesday: Public Holiday) Round 9 @ 2pm.
The schedule has been planned in such a way to accommodate working adults and school-going children from Selangor and KL without applying for leave from office/school. While, foreigners / local players who reside outside Klang Valley can use the weekdays to visit places of interest within KL e.g. KL Birdpark, Chinatown, Masjid India, MidValley Megamall or shopping malls within Golden Triangle area. As for Selangor, outstation players can always visit places like Sunway Lagoon, Batu Caves, Pulau Ketam and etc. You can even make a day trip to Genting Highlands - City of Entertainment, approximately 1hr journey by bus from KL Sentral / Puduraya bus station. Malaysia Chess - Manila Wins KaSUGI Team Chess Championship in Kuala Lumpur

Hi everyone,
Apocalypse-Manila Chess Team, led by International Master (IM) Ronald “Onat” Bancod proved unstoppable, winning the KaSUGI Team Chess Championship 2012 (Open) last weekend at the Citi Tel Express Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, according to a Fide report by Marlon Bernardino.
IM Ronald Bancod defeated Malaysian Master Tze Han Ng to lead Apocalypse-Manila Chess Team to a 3-1 in over Penang B in the seventh and penultimate round.
He drew with compatriot NM Carlo Lorena in the eight and final round as Apocalypse-Manila Chess Team suffered a heart-breaking loses to Bicol Express, 2.5-1.5, but still emerged over-all champion in the 58 team participated tournament.
Apocalypse-Manila Chess Team finished the eight-round tournament with 6 wins, 1 draw, 1 loss, 23 Board Points and 13 Match points.
The team is comprised of IM Ronald Bancod, United States chess master Albert Rivera, Franz Berretto and Mohamad Sacar.
The winning Filipino chess pushers pipped two other teams, STMIK-STIE Mikroskil and Bicol Express, all with the same score except for board points are 22.5 and 21.5 respectively putting them at second and third best teams of the KaSUGI Team tournament 2012.
STMIK-STIE Mikroskil is a mixed Indonesian-Brunei-Malaysian team, while the Bicol Express is mostly Filipinos and one Malaysian.Tesla Chess ended in fourth position and Penang A in fifth position. While the sponsors best team, KaSUGI A finished a creditable sixth position.
With the victory, Apocalypse-Manila Chess Team’s performance boosted the nation’s morale, said Team Manager Raymond Linsangan, a newly-elected board of director of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) under the leadership of it’s Chairman/President Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr. and Secretary-General and Tagaytay City Mayor Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino Jr. “Once again our flag has been raised in this foreign land after knowing that our Filipino kababayan (Apocalypse-Manila Chess Team) dominated the Malaysian Team chess championship,” he said.
