We are yet to come across a more funky and sexy chess tournament advert. Would you agree? We found this advert in GM Kevin Spraggett's old chess post.

HOLLYWOOD STAGES COLORFUL PAN-AMERICAN CHESS CONGRESS:
Los Angeles, the home of Hollywood, the citadel of make-believe, became the first California city to hold a major chess event since the international tournament held at Pasadena in 1932. The Hollywood event quickly established itself as the outstanding American tournament of 1945 due to the united efforts of the California Chess Association, the Los Angeles Times, the Hollywood Athletic Club, and Mr. Chess of the Pacific Coast, Herman Steiner.

Chess-conscious movie stars such as Charlie Chaplin, Humphrey Bogart, Charles Boyer, Basil Rathbone, Myrna Loy, Linda Darnell, Maureen O'Sullivan and many others were largely responsible for the phenomenal growth of Steiner's Hollywood Chess Group and inspiration for a chess congress in the film city. Steiner worked zealously for six months lining up players from North and South America. With the attractive prizes offered by the Los Angeles Times ($1000, $750, $500, $350, $200) his task was an easy one. Few tournaments can boast such a fund.

Guernsey Chess International from Oct 21

Hi everyone,

The 38th Guernsey International Chess Festival will be held from October 21-27 October 2012 at the Peninsula Hotel, Guernsey, according to the latest Fide update. The Open Tournament – Sponsored by Intertrust Guernsey.

A Seven Round, FIDE rated, Swiss Competition, open to players of any grade. Players with low ratings will be encouraged by the organisers to enter the Holiday tournament.

Time limit: 40 moves in 100 minutes and then 40 minutes to finish with a 30 second increment per move from move 1
Entry fee: £40 (includes prize-giving dinner: juniors £30 entry fee)
Main Prizes: £1,200 : £600 : £300 : £200 : £150

Currently 77 players are registered for the Open. Top rated are GM Spraggett Kevin (Canada 2588), GM Hillarp-Persson Tiger (Sweden 2578), GM Hebden Mark (England 2512), GM Tischbierek Raj (Germany 2468), WGM Houska Jovanka (Engalnd 2411) and IM Godard Maxence (France 2363). Last year's winner was GM Sarunas Sulskis from Lithuania.

A Seven Round, Swiss Competition (with a bye possible in any of the first four rounds) open to players graded bellow 1800 FIDE (150 ECF). FIDE rated players with a FIDE rating above 1800 may enter as long as they can demonstrate their national grade is below the required cut-off. This rule is applied at the organisers’ discretion.

Time limit: 40 moves in 2 hours and then 1 hour to finish
Entry fee: £40 (includes prize-giving dinner: juniors £30 entry fee)
Main Prizes: £400 : £200 : £100 : £75
Rounds 1 – 6 commence at 2.00 pm each day. The final round commences at 9.30 am on Saturday.
New ECF grades and ECF / Elo conversion formula are being used. All games will be ECF graded. The default time will continue to be one hour. You can access the official website for more details.

The Geneva Chess Club organised a cool chess match from August 4-10: Club members' team took on legends (all world chess championship candidates)! Viktor Korchnoi, Zoltan Ribli and Kevin Spraggett all top-scored for the legends to win 33-17! French chess magazine Europe-Echecs has a detailed report, videos and photos. Here are some of the cool videos. Guess which former world chess champion attended the ninth round as a surprise visit? Lars Rindlisbacher completed its first International Master norm with the result by 4.0 points on 10 against an average of 2544 elo.
