Balaguer Chess Open Title Goes to Peruvian GM Jorge Cori

The 18th Open Internacional D’Escacs Ciutat de Balaguer took place on 15-23rd July at the Casal de Ciudad Lapallavacara in Balaguer, Spain. The tournament was played over nine rounds of Swiss system with 10,000 EUR in prizes. The 18-years old Peruvian rising star GM Jorge Cori emerged clear winner of the tournament after concluding the race with 7,5 points. Cori earned 2100 EUR for the effort. Russian GM Vladimir Burmakin is second with 7,0 points, while the top seed GM Ni Hua of China took the third place on tie-breaks. (Chessdom.com)

Julio Granda Wins American Continental Chess Championship 2013

Peruvian GM Julio Granda won the American Continental Championship for second year in a row. He won his last round game to finish clear first at the event that took place on 6th – 15th May in Cochabamba, Bolivia, according to a Chessdom report.

Granda obtained 9.5 out of 11 points and finished a whole point ahead of his nearest follower, Cuban GM Isán Ortiz, who achieved 8.5 points. With 8 points, Argentine GM Diego Flores took clear third place. The big surprise of the event was given by the young Peruvian siblings GM Jorge Cori and WGM Daysi Cori, as they both got important victories in the last round to qualify to the upcoming World Cup.

The final round was filled with suspense, given that the players were fighting to get one of the four qualifying spots. Given that Granda already qualified last year with his first place in Mar del Plata, the biggest struggle was seen on boards.

Two main favorites, Cuban Lázaro Bruzón and Venezuelan Eduardo Iturrizaga, faced the young Peruvian siblings, Jorge and Deysi Cori. The strong Caribbean GMs knew that a win would get them in the desired spots, so they pushed hard to get it. Evidently, the Coris were more relaxed and handled the situation correctly; this attitude helped them get historic victories for their chess careers.

It is worth mentioning the fact that Argentine champion Diego Flores got a revenge from the last edition, when he was left out of the World Cup on tiebreaks.

GM Jorge Cori Wins 2nd Magistral IPD Chess 2013

The 2nd Magistral IPD 2013 took place on 11th-15th February at the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería on Lima, Perú, according to a Fide chess tournament news update.

Peruvian GM Jorge Cori confirmed his status as favorite and won the tournament with 7.5/9 points. IM Giuseppe Leiva recovered from his poor performance at the I Magistral IPD 2013 by finishing on second place with 6/9. The Peruvian trio at the top of the standings was completed by FM Diego Cuéllar, who obtained the same amount of points as the Spaniard IM Horacio Saldaño, but achieved a better score in the tie-breaks.

The event was a 10 player single round-robin. Players from five different countries participated in the competition. The time control was 90 min + 30 sec increment per move. The aim of the organizers was to give the young talents from Peru the chance to get IM norms.

Peru Chess News: Magistral IPD 2013 Strongest-ever Chess Event in the Country

The 1st Magistral IPD 2013 is taking place on 5-10 February at the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería on Lima, Perú, according to a Fide chess news update.

The tournament is a 10 player single round-robin. Players from six different countries will participate in the competition. The time control is 90 min + 30 sec increment per move. This Category XIII event is the strongest tournament ever held in Peru.

The IPD (Peruvian Institute of Sports) has decided to support this competition in order to give a chance to the young Peruvian International Masters of getting the GM norms without leaving the country.

Cori Chess Siblings - Peru catching up with world chess powers

Here is a sweet little statement by the Cori Chess Champions from Peru. These siblings have made laudable chess achievements this year.
On Wednesday under-16 world chess champion, Jorge Cori, said Peru’s level of chess had made significant strides in recent years, and was edging closer to world chess powers like Russia.

"There is something that has not been mentioned recently, and it is the fact that the Peruvian team ranked sixth [in the recent tournament held in Brazil],” Cori said.


“Russia is a world chess power and is currently ranked first but we are getting close to them,” he said to local radio RPP.


“We are making progress and winning more medals.”


Deysi Cori, Jorge’s sister, and under-18 world champion, agreed that Peruvian chess players who participated in the latest World Youth tournament had raised Peru’s international chess profile.


"Our teammates have been good at different tables, to the point of getting medals", said Daysi, who also won the 29th World Junior Girls Chess Championships in Chennai, India, earlier this year.
