Jamaica’s Powell gets FM Chess Title Posthumously

The World Chess Federation (FIDE) recently awarded 9 titles to Jamaican chess players for past and recent performances. The titles awarded were 1 FIDE Master (FM), 4 Candidate Master (CM), and 4 Woman Candidate Master (WCM).
Former Jamaica Chess Federation (JCF) president, John Powell, who died in 2007, was recently awarded the FIDE Masters (FM) chess title, posthumously, based upon his outstanding board 4 silver medal performance at the 1984 Olympiad in Thessaloniki, Greece.

FM Powell scored 7/9 on board 4 with 6 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss, and earned a FIDE ELO rating of 2201, with a performance rating of 2421. At the time of his death in 2007, FM Powell was a FIDE International Arbiter. (~Bertram Scott via http://www.thechessdrum.net)

Here is a sweet chess news update via The Chess Drum. Chess has progressed in Jamaica under the patronage of local chess administration and players, led by QC Ian Wilkinson, President of Jamaican Chess Federation. Recently several Jamaicans were awarded titles.
The latest chess title in Jamaica goes to their the youngest chess player 12-year old Rachel Miller. She has just earned her Women’s Candidate Master title.
The title was earned from her result at the 2012 Central American and Caribbean Youth Chess Championship held in Caguas, Puerto Rico in December 2012 where she scored 5/9 (7th position in under-12). Confirmation came this week from FIDE to the joy of her coach FM Warren Elliott. Miller, a student at Campion, has compiled a string of successes in her short career. Rachel has a sister Rianna Miller, who also competed in the under-10 section and finished 2nd in the Under-8 female category.

Some blitz chess news from Jamaica. FIDE Master Warren Elliott and National Master Malaku Lorne tied for first place at the 2012 National Blitz Chess Championships, which took place on Saturday at the Shirley Retreat Hotel.
Lorne, made a long awaited return to top-class chess when he defeated veteran National Masters Russell Porter and Geoffrey Byfield to end on 5.5 points from six games.
Elliott, who has held the title for more than five consecutive years, also ended undefeated with 5.5 points after overpowering National Master Robert Wheeler and 2012 Jamaica champion Andrew Mellace.
Both players drew in the fourth round and agreed to share the national title. Zachary Ramsay trailed behind in third place with five points.
Deborah Porter, who finished with four points, was awarded the prize for National Women's Blitz Champion, while Horace Sinclair was declared the National Junior Blitz Champion.
Prizes were also awarded to the best players in each age group category. Nathan Walsh claimed the gold medal for categories "Under 8, 10, and 12", while John Lord won the "Under 14" prize.

Jamaica Ready to Select Chess Team for Olympiad

Here is some chess news from Jamaica. The country is all set to select its team for the Chess Olympiad. The Jamaica Chess Federation (JCF) has invited the best 24 men chess players and best eight women chess players on the island to take part in the 44th annual National Championship.
The 24 players invited to participate in the National Champion-ships Open are: National Cham-pion 2011, National Master (NM) Damion Davy, National Junior Champion 2011, Miguel Asher, National Junior Champion 2012 Stuart James, Fide Candidate Master (FCM) Mark Holness, FCM Duane Rowe, NM Malaku Lorne, NM Andrew Mellace, Women's Fide Master (WFM) Deborah Richards, International Master (IM) Jomo Pitterson, Fide Master (FM) Warren Elliot, FM Shane Matthews, NM Peter Myers, NM Mikhail Solomon, Ian Wilkinson, Amari James, Mark Henry, Paul Brooks, Zachary Ramsay, Kenroy Smith, Sheyras Smith, Andrew Soares, Peter Thomas, Walter Williams and Markland Douglas.
Invited to play in the National Championships Women are: Ariel Barrett, Alethia Edwards, National Junior Champion girls 2012 Krishna Gray, Zhu Hui, Rachel Miller, Annesha Smith, Melisha Smith and Kadian McGlashan.
Note that WFM Richards has been invited to play in the National Open Championships, and JCF selection committee representative Robert Wheeler explained that by virtue of this invitation she is an automatic selection for the women's Olympiad team if she were not to qualify for the Open team.
Jamaica Junior champion
The 2012 National Junior Champion is Stuart James, who beat Tewana Mellace when the tiebreak was played last weekend at Kingston College. Both players ended the tournament on 6.5 points each two weekends ago, which forced the tiebreak that James won by 2.5 to 0.5.
