Record 7th Russian Chess Title: Peter Svidler goes 'Wheeeeeeeee' with Joy

Chess Blog for Daily Chess News and Trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2013

Hello everyone,

From left: Peter Svidler, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Nikita Vitiugov

Peter Svidler has become the Russian National Chess Champion 2013 thereby creating a Russian chess record of having won the title seven times. Svidler picked up the title after beating Ian Nepomniachtchi in the tiebreak. Svidler tweeted "wheeeeeeeee" right after winning the title as congratulations poured in! Svidler has previously won the title in 1994, 1995, 1997, 2003, 2008 and 2011.
In the last round, Ian Nepomniachtchi was able to capitalise on a blunder by Vladimir Kramnik to catch up with Svidler as the latter drew a game with Sergey Karjakin. Svidler and Nepomniachtchi then faced each other in a 15-minute rapid playoff which was won by Svidler 1.5-0.5. Also, Nikita Vitiugov was able to beat Vladimir Kramnik for the third spot on a better tiebreak score.

ACP Chess Rapid Knockout: Alexander Grischuk wins Battle of Nerves vs Ian Nepomniachtchi in Final

Chess Blog for Daily Chess News and Trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2013

Hi everyone,

Photos: Lennart Ootes

The high-energy ACP Rapid Chess Knockout has just concluded in Riga, Latvia. The final was an exciting battle of nerves with Alexander Grischuk beating fellow Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi in the final.

The entire tournament had excellent live commentary in Russian and English. There was quite a friendly atmosphere as well. In fact, that's what chess is all about. Just before the last game, Grischuk and Nepomniachtchi engaged in an animated conversation even though they were going to start the battle for the top prize within a few seconds!

The ACP Cup was organised by the Association of Chess Professionals together with the Latvian Chess Federation. The venue for the tournament is provided by Rietumu Bank, which has one of the best premises in Riga for hosting exhibitions, auctions and other cultural and intellectual events. The bank is also participating in the financing of the tournament.

The Association of Chess Professionals (ACP) is a not-for-profit organisation, whose main purpose is the protection of chess professionals’ rights and the practice and promotion of chess worldwide, in particular through the organisation of chess tournaments and other chess events.

Le Quang Liem is World Blitz Chess Champion 2013

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2013

Hi everyone,

GM Le Quang Liem is the World Blitz Chess Champion 2013. Ian Nepomniachtchi and Liem had finished the first day by staying in joint lead at the championship in Khanty Mansiysk at the Ugra Chess Academy in Khanty-Mansiysk. Sixty chess players from 18 countries were fighting for the title of the World Blitz champion.

Both GMs - Liem and Nepomniachtchi - had 12 points each at the World Blitz Chess Championship after the first day. Ruslan Ponomariov was in second place at 11.5. Right behind were Alexander Grischuk and Ernesto Inarkiev.

But, Liem shot ahead of the other chess players on the second day and held on to his lead. The only chance anyone had of catching up with Liem was with Ruslan Ponomariov who came very close. However, eventually, Liem beat
Sergey Movsesian (Armenia) in the last round and won the title. Ponomariov drew with Gabriel Sargissian in the last round.

Grischuk, Nepomniachtchi and Ponomatiov finished the World Blitz Chess championship only half a point behind the winner. The silver medal went to Alexander Grischuk and the bronze to Ruslan Ponomariov.

The World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship took place from June 6 to 10 in Khanty-Mansiysk. The World Rapid Champion 2013 is Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (AZE). Silver and Bronze medals in the Blitz went to Ian Nepomniachtchi and Alexander Grischuk.

The prize fund of the World Blitz and Rapid Chess Championships was $4,00,000 and was divided between the two tournaments equally.

European Chess Championship 2013: Alexander Moiseenko First on Tiebreaks

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2013

Hi everyone,

The European Individual Chess Championship 2013 was held in Legnica, Poland from May 4 (day of arrival) until May 17 (day of departure) 2013. It took place at the Qubus Hotel 4*. No less than 286 players registered to participate, even though some left early as they had no chance to get one of the coveted 23 spots for the upcoming World Cup in Norway. 143 GMs and 63 IMs were among these players.

Ukrainian GM Alexander Moiseenko stood out from the very strong field from the “early middlegame” of the event. Already after 6 rounds, he was the sole leader with 5.5 points. It seemed unlikely that he would be able to keep this level throughout the event, but he almost did. He arrived as the sole leader to the last round, where he lost to Ian Nepomniachtchi. This allowed other nine players to join the leader on 8/11, however, Moiseenko took first place on tiebreaks, according to a Chessdom report.
Alexander Moiseenko and David Navara

Francisco Vallejo Pons and Aleksey Dreev both finished among the 23rd first qualified, but already had tickets for the World Cup, so the list of players that got a spot in the prestigious event goes down to the 25th place, thus including Russian GM Vadim Zvjaginsev and French GM Andrei Istratescu.

It is worth noting that none of the three highest rated players finished among the 23: Dmitry Jakovenko, Evgeny Tomashevsky and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave.

The special prize given to the player that achieved the biggest difference between his Rating Performance and his Elo rating was won by Polish Jakub Szostko, who performed 364 points above his rating.

Aeroflot Chess Blitz 2013: Congrats to Ian Nepomniachtchi for Clear First; GM Alexandra Kosteniuk Best Among Women

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012

Hi Everyone,

Winner of the 2008 Aeroflot Chess Open and the 2010 Russian Chess Champion Ian Nepomniachtchi has won the 2013 Aeroflot Blitz Chess event today. Taking home $10,000 as the first prize, the Russian Grandmaster showed a steady performance in a Swiss system of 9 rounds paired. This means each player played nine matches of two games against every opponent of a round. 12th Women's World Chess Champion Chess Queen™ Alexandra Kosteniuk was leading the tournament after four rounds with a perfect score of 8.0 points and Ian Nepomniachtchi was in second place with 7.5 points. The two were paired in the fifth round. That's when the 2010 Russian champion put on speed and went on to win the title. A nice report is available at the Russian Chess Federation website.

The time control was 3 minutes per game plus two seconds per move starting from the first. A total of 270 participants were in attendance at the tournament that began with a different format instead of the traditional open chess tournament.

Ian Nepomniachtchi scored 15.5 points out of 18. Peter Svidler came in second with 14.5 points and third was Alexander Grischuk with 14 points.

If the Russian men Grandmasters were sweeping the top slots, the Russian women chess divas were not far behind.

12th Women's World Chess Champion Alexandra Kosteniuk proved to be the best woman chess player at the event scoring 11.0 points. That gave her the 48th position in the final ranking. GM Kosteniuk earned 31 elo points for her strong performance and her next official blitz chess rating will be 2612!

Second among women was India's GM Dronavalli Harika in 72nd place with 10.5 points. In 92nd place was Russia's GM Tatiana Kosintseva with 10.0 points. GM Kateryna Lahno was one place below in 93rd place also with 10.0 points. GM Natalia Zhukova was in 117th place with 9.5 points.

World Chess Champion Vishy Anand's Second Peter Heine Nielsen to Assist World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2012

Hi everyone,

This chess news is all over the Internet. World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand's team member GM Peter Heine Nielsen has joined World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen team for the upcoming Candidates Chess Matches in March, 2013.

A Chessdom.com update states that Eirik Gullaksen of BergenSjakk pointed to an article on VG.no which announces that the famous Danish Grandmaster Peter Heine Nielsen will be one of Magnus Carlsen’s seconds in the Candidates Matches in London.

Carlsen’s manager Espen Agdestein says that the two will spend a couple of weeks in the Canary Islands to prepare Carlsen for perhaps the most important tournament so far in his career.

Carlsen and Nielsen have been working together on and off since 2004, but the reigning World Champion Vishy Anand has always been Nielsen’s main employer.

GM Peter Heine Nielsen

Espen Agdestein clarified that if Norwegian wins the Candidates to face Vishy Anand for the title match, they would not be able to have Nielsen in the team: “We could not have Peter. He has worked with Anand for so long, and even if there are no legal problems, it would not be good in moral sense. Peter is therefore not going to be with us on the preparations if we ever have World Championship match” – says Agdestein.

At the same time the status of Ian Nepomniachtchi remains a mystery. For the recent London Chess Classic, the Norwegians insisted that Nepomniachtchi arrives to London because “Magnus got used to preparing with Ian and there is the much needed “chemistry” during the work”.

It was also said that the London Chess Classic should be the final test for Magnus-Ian cooperation before the Candidates Tournament in March. But Agdestein is now reluctant to announce the names of other seconds in the team. He only said that “We want people who are 100 percent motivated and and it is hardly appropriate to compete with the Russian players on the best Russian resources.”
