European senior team chess championship begins in Greece

Hi everybody,

The European Senior Team Chess Championship has started in Thessaloniki, Greece. Some of the world's best players are there to represent 35 teams from 20 countries and 52 titled players. England is fielding three teams, Finland, Denmark, Israel, Norway and Sweden are represented by two teams each. In addition, the teams of Turku and Helsinki (also Finland) are competing. The Championship will be played in 9 rounds following the Swiss System and concludes on 11th May. Suba, Gaprindashvili win European Senior Chess Championships 2011

We are delighted to congratulate Grandmaster Mihai Suba for winning the European senior chess championship 2011 in Italy - Courmayeur (Aosta Valley).

In the women's section, we congratulate Grandmaster Nona Gaprindashvili for taking the title. You can find the complete standings here.



Also GM Sarunas Sulskis from Lithuania, who had just won the open tournament in Ravenna, visited European Senior Championship in Courmayeur to officially present the European Senior Championship that will be played in Kaunas in August 2012.

WIM Galina Strutinskaya is Senior European's Women Rapid Chess Champion

Hi everyone,

WIM Galina Strutinskaya has become the European Women's Rapid Chess Champion while the corresponding title in the Open Section goes to GM Viktor Kupreichik on tie-breaks. A salute to all these seniors.

The 11th European Senior Chess Rapid Championship was played on 4th and 5th April in Courmayeur, Aosta Valley - Italy. 35 players took participation in the warm-up event before the European Senior Championship that starts tomorrow at the same venue.

Five players shared the first place with 6.5 points each but GM Viktor Kupreichik was declared winner on best tiebreak. Incidentally, he was the defending champion from last year in Thessaloniki. You can find more details and photos at the official website.

European Senior Chess Championship 2011 begins

Hello everybody,

If you're just wondering what chess is happening right after the European Individual Chess Championship then the news for you is that the European Senior Chess Championship 2011 has begun in the beautiful Courmayeur, Aosta Valley - Italy. It runs from April 4 to 14. Actually, the European Senior Chess Rapid 2011 will take place from 4-5 April and the main event will begin on April 6.

Participants can be any gentleman or lady who is registered by his ECU federation, and he reached his 60th birthday till 01.01.2011 or she has reached her 50th birthday till 01.01. 2011. The winners in their respective category are titled as European Senior Champions. The Championship shall be played in 9 rounds following the Swiss System. Time control is 40 moves in 90 minutes and 30 minutes to the end of the game. The player will additionally receive 30 seconds for each move. The Rapid championship shall be played in 9 rounds following the Swiss System as well. The time control shall be 25 minutes for the game, for each player, additional 10 seconds for each move.
