The 15th European Individual Chess Championship 2014 has concluded with Russian GM Alexander Motylev taking the title with a very strong performance.
The 15th European Individual Chess Championship 2014 has concluded with Russian GM Alexander Motylev taking the title with a very strong performance.
The 15th edition of the chess championship, held in Yerevan, commemorated the 85th anniversary of great Armenian chess player, IX World Chess Champion Tigran Petrosian.
The championship was an 11-round Swiss system in accordance with the ECU Tournament Rules and FIDE Laws of Chess and was held in Yerevan, Armenia from March 2 until March 15 (day of departure) 2014. The tournament was held at the Elite Plaza Business Centre.
Alexander Motylev's stunning performance including a final-round draw with David Navara allowed him to finish with a full point lead over the rest of the field at 9/11 points. GM Fedoseev Vladimir, coming in third, was surely the star of the event. The Russian teenager scored six wins and only one loss. Incidentally, Motylev's top chess result first happened when he won the Russian national chess championship in 2001.

The European Individual Championship 2014 was also a qualification event for the next World Cup. According to FIDE regulations and the decision of the ECU Board, 23 players will qualify:
