Delhi Chess Open: GM Aleksej Aleksandrov of Belarus Takes Clear First

Hi everyone,

Grandmaster Aleksej Aleksandrov of Belarus has won the Delhi Chess Open also known as the Parsvnath Chess International Open. He sealed a clear first with a final-round draw with Grandmaster Henrik Teske of Germany who was third. Aleksandrov finished with eight points out of a possible ten and finished clear first ahead of Marat Dzhumaev of Uzbekistan who finished second with best tiebreak score on 7.5 points. It turned out to be a three-way tie for the second spot and Teske finished third while Indian Grandmaster Vaibhav Suri ended fourth.

Marat Dzhumaev defeated P Magesh Chandran while Vaibhav Suri ended the party of K Rathnakaran who had made a Grandmaster norm after winning the penultimate round.

M R Lalith Babu, Lu Shanglei of China and M Shyam Sundar finished in a tie for the fifth spot winning their final round games with Jahongir Vakhidov of Uzbekistan, Akshayraj Kore and Kiril Kuderinov of Kazakhstan respectively.

Delhi Chess 2013 R3: Aleksej Aleksandrov in Sole Lead

Grandmaster Aleksej Aleksandrov of Belarus has taken sole lead after three rounds at the The Delhi Chess Open with a super victory over International Master K Rathnakaran in the third round. The Belarus Grandmaster has perfect score.

There are 16 players in second place at half-point behind. These include Grandmasters Marat Dzhumaev of Uzbekistan, Lu Shanglei of China, Raset Ziatdinov of United States, Niaz Murshed of Bangladesh and Indian Grandmasters M R Lalith Babu, Magesh Panchanathan and Sahaj Grover.

Top seed Abhijeet Gupta meanwhile was held to a second draw in the tournament. The beneficiary was Ram S Krishna who had to defend a slightly worse endgame for a long time. Earlier it was a Catalan opening by Gupta that gave him a slight advantage which was not enough for a victory in the end.P Magesh Chandran caught Himanshu Sharma unawares in the opening itself and got a clear better position sooner than he had expected. “It was quite easy once I got better prospects, Chandran said after the game.
