GRENKE Chess Classic Baden-Baden Category 19 GM Tournament

Hello everyone,
For the first time ever, the Chess Center Baden-Baden (Schachzentrum Baden-Baden) will host a category 19 GM tournament, the GRENKE Chess Classic Baden-Baden, according to a press release.
This event will follow the tradition of great chess tournaments that the well-known southern German Spa town has established over the last two centuries. Baden-Baden is also known as the hometown of OSG Baden-Baden, the most successful German club in the 1990 and 2000s. The main event of the chess festival will be the GRENKE Chess Classic Baden-Baden:

Fabiano Caruana Italy No. 5 in the world 20 years
Michael Adams England No. 23 in the world 41 years
Arkadij Naiditsch Germany No. 37 in the world 27 years
Daniel Fridman Germany No. 78 in the world 36 years
Georg Meier Germany No. 108 in the world 25 years
The tournament is scheduled from February 7th to 17th 2013. The venue will be the historical halls of Kulturhaus LA8 (House of Culture) in the center of Baden-Baden. The games will start daily at 3 p.m., in the last round at 1 p.m.
To complement the main event, several side tournaments – each limited to 80 players – will take place:
Chess Classic Elo Open (9 rounds, 9 days, only for players ELO 1800+) 7th–15th Feb 2013
Chess Classic Fasching (6 rounds, 3 days, open to all) 9th–11th Feb 2013
Chess Classic Ferien (6 rounds, 3 days, open to all) 14th–16th Feb 2013

The Remco Heite Chess Tournament 2012 is taking place from November 15 – 18th in Netherlands. It is a round robin tournament with Grandmasters Luke McShane, Ivan Sokolov, Loek Van Wely, Matthew Sadler, Ernst Spike, and Daniel Fridman.
The first round was played on Friday. Luke McShane and Loek Van Wely took the lead after victories against Ivan Sokolov and Daniel Fridman, while the game Sadler – Ernst finished draw.
Saturday and Sunday will have double rounds.
The Remco Heite Tournament is a biennial tournament. The first edition, in 2006, was won by Loek van Wely. In 2008, the first prize went to the Polish Grandmaster Bartlomiej Macieja. Englishman Luke McShane won in 2010.

Sparkassen Chess Meeting: Vladimir Kramnik Top Seed in Dortmund

The 2012 Sparkassen Chess Meeting begins on July 13 and runs until July 22, 2012 in Dortmund, Germany. Ten players are competing in the round-robin event. Former World Chess Champion Vladimir Kramnik of Russia is the top seed. The just-crowned World Rapid Chess Champion, also from Russia, Sergey Karjakin, is the second seed. Four of the five members of the German national chess team that won the gold medal at the recent European Team Chess Championship are also taking part, according to the official website.

Daniel Fridman becomes German Chess Champion for 2012

Here is the latest European chess news via www.chessdom.com. GM Daniel Fridman has won the German national chess championship. He scored a nice 7,5/9 points taking clear first at the event. With this title Daniel Fridman repeats his success from 2008 and adds to the recent good performances at Vladimir Bagirov Memorial and the European Team Chess Championship
As with many chess champions, Fridman learned the rules of the game at an early age, around four years. He soon became a regular player of youth tournaments, competing on a national, regional and international stage. His biggest junior success occurred at Duisberg in 1992, when he took home a bronze medal in the Under-16 category of the World Youth Chess Championship.
By the mid-1990s, Fridman was recognised as a serious force in Latvian chess and he went on to win the national championship in 1996, having gained the International Master title in 1994. Leaving his junior status behind, there were some early international tournament successes such as at the Wichern Open in Hamburg in 1997 (joint second place, behind Sergei Movsesian) and Senden in 1998 (joint winner with Frank Holzke).
In 1999 he relocated to Germany and qualified as a Grandmaster in 2001.
Most of Fridman’s major tournament victories have occurred after the year 2000. These include outright or shared first places at Essen (‘B’ Group) 2001, Recklinghausen Summer Open 2002, Zurich Christmas Open 2002, Southampton, Bermuda 2003 (‘B’ Group), Stratton Mountain 2004, Marseille Open 2006, Nuremberg 2006, Lausanne 2006, Venaco (Corsica) 2006 and the Liverpool International Open of 2007.
He won the German Championship at Bad Wörishofen in 2008.
He is a renowned master of speed chess and among other victories, took first places at the Essen rapid contest of 2000 and Dutch Open rapid tourney of 2008. Playing internet competitions, he has enjoyed success at the Dos Hermanas tournaments of 2004 and 2005.
In team events GM Fridman represented the Latvian men’s team on board 4 at the Yerevan Oympiad of 1996 and at the Pula 1997 European Team Chess Championship. He returned to the Olympiad team as first board in 2004 (Calvia) and in 2006 (Turin). Having become a German citizen, he has since switched chess federations and as incumbent national champion in 2008, was an automatic choice for the German team at the Dresden Olympiad. In 2012 he snatched the first place at the ETCC with the team of Germany.
Playing league chess in the Bundesliga, he has been a member of the Mulheim Nord club since 2004.
