Hi everyone,

A nice chess point made by British Grandmaster Nigel Short is that chess keeps you sane. He said this while talking to the BBC in a delightful video interview and even played a game. Short was discussing this in reference to the Bobby Fischer against the World movie. You can watch the video at this link. Must watch really. The GM says he is still on the path of learning in chess and the game is one of indefinite complexities.

Kasparov - Short exhibition chess match in Leuven likely

Hello everyone,

According to The Week in Chess, a very interesting event is round the corner. Mark Crowther writes that there are strong indications that Garry Kasparov is about to play another exhibition rapid match, this time against his former challenger Nigel Short. Now rumours, which seem to have a strong basis to them, suggest that a sponsor wants to hold the match in the Town Hall of Leuven, Belgium in October and that negotiations are under way. As likely as not it will be rapid chess, possibly with a blitz element too.

Founder of Option, hold a press conference announcing the launch of the Kasparov Chess Foundation Europe in Brussels 8th June. 11:30am-1pm, the event will be streamed live on the internet. The mission of the Foundation is to promote chess in schools, especially amongst children and young people (age 6 – 18), throughout Europe.

Nigel Short chess simul on a tennis court!

Hi everyone,

Trust grandmaster Nigel Short to hold a simul on a tennis court! And, two youngsters from Hendon Chess Club were the heroes at the evening. World Championship candidate Nigel Short took on 47 players at the Middlesex University Real Tennis Club on 15th February. The play took place on the court itself, with spectators watching from the galleries.

Juniors Joseph Levene (b. December 1996) and Isaac Sanders (b. May 1998) both scored highly creditable draws, with Nigel beating all the other contenders. Petr Vachtfeidl from London’s Metropolitan Chess Club was the first person to enter the event and the last to finish, and Nigel couldn’t beat him in an opposite coloured bishop endgame. The player who travelled the furthest to play Nigel was certainly Newcastle’s Zheming Zhang (Jesmond Junior Chess Club) the reigning British Under 8 and 9 Champion.
