Now player caught cheating at German team chess championship

A German player cheats at the chess team championships... and then, admits it. Just the thing that spoils our beautiful chess world.
According to a news item by www.chessvibes.com, a participant of the German Championship, which concluded on Friday in Bonn, was caught cheating. FM Christoph Natsidis used a chess program on his smartphone during his last-round game against GM Sebastian Siebrecht to analyse a position from the game. The 23-year-old player from Bannewitz, Germany admitted that he cheated, and was excluded from the tournament, missing out on an IM norm he had scored after 8 rounds.This is what Grandmaster Sebastian Siebrecht - at the receiving end of this disturbing event - told the news website:"We had reached a complicated position. I had taken on b2 which was a bit risky. However, in a very concrete position where calculating was necessary, he was constantly away from the board. Three times, I made a move and it took 8-10 minutes for him to show up at the board. Naturally I started looking for him and I even waited for a while in the toilets. One toilet was occupied, but I didn’t hear any typical ‘toilet sounds’.
During the game [Igor] Khenkin came to me and asked: ‘What’s going on? Where is your opponent?’ I decided to go to the arbiter and try to find Natsidis together. Then, indeed, we did find him in the toilet, but the arbiter did nothing, which made me very angry. I could not play a normal game anymore and in a position that was still complicated, I decided to offer a draw, which he accepted.”
Eventually, a smartphone with the game position was found on the cheating law student who admitted he did it. You can read all the details at this link. It is beyond us why chess players can even bother to put their mind to even consider cheating. Chess is such fun and so beautiful who wants to ruin it.

French Cheat Scandal: Battesti Answers
Hi everyone!
Following the ORIGINAL post about the French Chess Federation accusing strong GM's of cheating, and the official ANSWER of Sébastien Feller, we just found the answer of Leo Battesti, published on Europe-Echecs. Battesti calls Sébastien's letter "pathetic".
We would not have expected any other reply, although it's good that people closer to the issue are speaking up. We would like to hear more facts, though, at the moment it's only accusations. It's strange the French Chess Federation announced this whole issue before the final decision of the Disciplinary Committee. Nothing short of an irrefutable proof should be provided to the chess world.
Still in search of the (possibly sad) truth.

Quel est exactement le système de triche qui a été utilisé ? Les auteurs de cette triche ont-il reconnu les faits ?
Vous comprenez qu'il me soit difficile de m'exprimer sur des faits qui font l'objet d'une instruction. Ce que je peux vous dire c'est que les derniers à souhaiter qu'une telle procédure soit engagée, c'est nous mêmes, dirigeants fédéraux. A moins d'être masochistes... C'est, en effet, vraiment pénible et très douloureux. Et je profite de l'occasion pour féliciter Jean-Claude Moingt , notre Président, et Joanna Pomian, Vice-Présidente, pour leur courage. Tous deux sont témoins dans ce lourd dossier. Ils ont fait passer l'intérêt sportif avant leur propre confort. lls auraient pu jouer la politique de l'autruche plutôt que d'assumer leurs responsabilités. Ils ont parfaitement eu raison d'agir ainsi. C'est dans ce type de situation que l'on juge les dirigeants. Dans un monde où le cynisme tient souvent lieu de politique, cela fait chaud au cœur de voir de tels comportements.
Je tiens à préciser que tous deux étant appelés à témoigner, le bureau m'a désigné comme porte-parole fédéral pour cette affaire.
Qu'est-ce qui a poussé la FFE à révéler cette affaire au grand jour ?
Précisément ce souci de défendre les valeurs sportives. Nous mettons en avant les vertus socio-éducatives des échecs, nous aurions été en totale contradiction en nous taisant lâchement pour préserver notre propre tranquillité. Enfin je puis vous dire, eu égard aux témoignages et aux faits portés à la connaissance des membres du bureau, que nous sommes malheureusement fondés à engager de telles poursuites.

A Khanty-Mansysk, comme partout maintenant, les arbitres sont pourtant très attentifs à la triche, n'y a t-il donc aucun moyen de l'empêcher ?
Il est difficile de faire face aux évolutions technologiques. Rien de plus simple, lors de retransmissions en direct, que de relayer des indications. Une aide même ponctuelle, dans des situations complexes, et c'est un gain quasi assuré. En tant qu'organisateur d'événements internationaux j'ai souvent été alerté par certains comportements. Mais souvent, au nom de la légitime présomption d'innocence, et sans preuve, sans témoignages précis, il est difficile d'intervenir. Toutefois il faut agir, tant via le corps arbitral que par des moyens techniques pour limiter l'actuelle dérive. Nous allons ainsi proposer au prochain Comité Directeur de la FFE, le 29 janvier, des moyens techniques pour l'organisation du prochain championnat d'Europe à Aix-les-Bains : délai d'au moins 15 minutes dans la retransmission internet des parties, interdiction des portables etc... Il est vrai, toutefois, que dès qu'il y a des enjeux financiers, les risques de triche sont de plus en plus élevés. A mon avis, et cela n'engage que moi, faute de moyens techniques adéquats, on peut craindre le pire pour l'avenir des parties à cadences classiques avec dotation de prix. Nous ne sommes pas dans une dérive généralisée type cyclisme professionnel, mais il faut être sur nos gardes et agir.
Et maintenant, quelles sont les procédures prévues, nationales et internationales, pour la suite des évènements ?
La commission de discipline de la FFE a été saisie. L'instruction est en cours. La FIDE a bien évidemment été informée. A aucun moment nous n'avons hésité à engager les actions appropriées. On en ne transige pas, on ne négocie pas dans de telles circonstances. Et cette ligne de conduite prévaudra dans toutes nos options futures.
A votre avis, quelles seront les conséquences sur l'image des échecs en général et sur l'équipe de France en particulier ?
Paradoxalement je pense que l'image fédérale va être encore plus positive. J'ai d'ailleurs jeté un œil sur des forums français ou internationaux et nombre d'internautes vantent le courage politique de la FFE. Je pense que dès l'instant où l'on agit pour défendre les intérêts sportifs des échecs, on n'a aucune crainte à avoir. Ce qui aurait été fortement préjudiciable, c'est le silence. Tant pour nos consciences pour que pour l'intérêt des Echecs.
Ce que je tiens également à dire c'est que les autres membres de l'équipe de France ne sont absolument pas concernés. Ils sont même, selon moi, victimes de cette situation. Mais nous sommes très fiers d'eux, de leur talent naturel et de leur probité. La tricherie est, fort heureusement, un fait marginal. 99 % de nos joueurs sont des sportifs. On peut donc être raisonnablement optimistes.
Que pensez vous des dénégations de Sébastien Feller ?
Pathétique ! Et insultant pour notre président et sa fédération. Je pense que ce jeune joueur est mal conseillé car au lieu de prendre ses responsabilités, il cherche à faire diversion en salissant l'honneur d'un grand monsieur des Echecs français.

French Cheating Scandal - Feller Contests and Counter-Attack!s

Following our post "Scandal: French Chess Grandmasters Accused of Cheating" 3 days ago, and 58 comments as of now, the world is following the situation, amazed that there could be such a serious accusation, without presenting the facts. Many are accepting the accusations without asking questions.
Even the New York Times Chess Blog wrote a story about the scandal yesterday.
The issue is that, as some people in the comments to our first post have mentioned, that the players should be considered innocent, until the discipline commission, after duly verifying the facts, prove and decide otherwise. A mistake would prove very costly both to the accusing and to the accused.
We just received an email from GM Sébastien Feller himself, who made an official statement, stating that he totally contests the accusations, and that they were caused by totally different reasons such as the fact that he supported Ilyumzhinov in the FIDE election, and that he talked about accounting irregularities of the French Chess Federation. Feller says he hired a lawyer to counter-attack the French Federation. Read the official statement by Sébastien Feller below:

Je conteste totalement les accusations de tricherie de la Fédération Française d' Echecs. Cette procédure disciplinaire est en réalité liée au fait que j'ai soutenu lors des Olympiades, l' actuel président de la FIDE en opposition avec l 'acutelle direction de la Fédération Française des Echecs. Le président de la FIDE est d' ailleurs diffamé sur le blog de Jean-Claude Moingt, lequel prétend qu 'il a bénéficié de procurations fictives. De plus, j' ai fait état lors de conversations privées, lesquelles ont été répétées, d' irrégularités comptables de la Fédération Française (des précisions seront données ultérieurement), lesquelles ont déclenché la colère du président. J'ai demandé à mon avocat, Me Charles Morel, d' engager une action en justice en dommages et intérêts contre la Fédération Française pour avoir de façon injustifiée cité mon nom dans un communiqué, repris sur tous les sites français et étrangers, ainsi que dans la presse internationale.

Scandal: French Chess Grandmasters Accused of Cheating

We're in shock. We just read (in French) on the main page of the French Chess Federation www.echecs.asso.fr that a disciplinary action has been started on December 22, 2010 against Grandmasters Sébastien Feller and Arnaud Hauchard, as well against International Master Cyril Marzolo. These players are accused of "organized cheating", lacking sport ethics, and hurting the image of the National Team of France, during the Chess Olympiads of Khanty-Mansiysk. The FIDE has been informed, according to the news report.

La Fédération Française des Echecs saisit sa Commission de Discipline contre des membres de l'équipe de France, pour "triche"
La Fédération Française des Echecs (FFE) annonce qu'elle a engagé, le 22 décembre 2010, une action disciplinaire contre les Grand-Maîtres Internationaux Sébastien Feller et Arnaud Hauchard, ainsi que contre le Maître International Cyril Marzolo, à la suite de soupçons de "triche organisée, manquement grave à l'éthique sportive, atteinte portée à l'image de l'équipe nationale olympique, dans le cadre du Championnat du Monde d'Echecs par équipes qui s'est déroulé à Khanty-Mansyik (Russie), du 21 septembre au 3 octobre 2010".
Une information sur cette procédure a par ailleurs été adressée à la Fédération Internationale des Echecs (FIDE), ainsi qu'au Ministère des Sports, en tant qu'administration de tutelle de la FFE.

Lots of comments are gathering already in France and no doubt will also pop up here.
The issue is extremely serious, it's the first time Grandmasters are implicated in high-level cheating. Besides, we cannot imagine a Federation announcing concrete names without being 100% sure of the facts. But then, how come their "Press Release" does not have any facts.
We'll have to wait for additional facts before we can make up our minds. Labels: cheating
