Vassily Ivanchuk wins 47th Capablanca Chess Memorial

GM Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine has won the his sixth title at the traditional Capablanca Chess Memorial. The 47th Capablanca Memorial was held from May 3-15 at the Riviera hotel in Havana, Cuba. The Elite Group was a six-player double round robin.

Ivanchuk held on to the lead throughout the tournament with three wins and seven draws to win the tournament a full point ahead of the competition. Cuban GM Leinier Domínguez Perez (2730), three-time champion of Capablanca Memorial, also scored three wins, but suffered two defeats. Domínguez’s last round victory against Ian Nepomniachtchi allowed him to catch the Russian on the shared 2nd place.

1. Ivanchuk Vassily UKR 2764 – 6.5
2-3. Nepomniachtchi Ian RUS 2716 and Dominguez Perez Leinier CUB 2725 – 5.5
4. Potkin Vladimir RUS 2642 – 4.5
5-6. Quesada Perez Yuniesky CUB 2625 and Laznicka Viktor CZE 2693 – 4.0
The Premier Group was a 10-player round robin with other top Cuban players and four foreign Grandmasters.
GM Gonzalez Vidal Yuri took a clear first place with 6.0/9 points, while IM Bacallao Alonso Yusnel confirmed another GM norm.

Capablanca Chess Memorial R5: Vassily Ivanchuk in Sole Lead

Wednesday is a break and the tournament resumes on Thursday.  Ivanchuk remains undefeated with 3.5 points. He beat Czech player Viktor Laznicka on Tuesday. Earlier, he had beaten Cuba’s Leinier Dominguez and tied with the Russians Vladimir Potkin and Ian Nepomniachtchi, as well as with another local player Yunieski Quesada.According to the Prensa Latina news agency, Cuban grandmaster Dominguez is in second place with three points – just ahead of Laznicka and Nepomniachtchi, both with 2.5 points.On Thursday, at the beginning of the second round, matches will be seen between Potkin and Ivanchuk; Dominguez and Laznicka; and Nepomniachtchi and Quesada. Capablanca Chess Memorial 2012 Begins

The 47th Capablanca Memorial is taking place in the traditional venue of Havana, Cuba from May 4-14. (Yes, Vassily Ivanchuk is playing, before you ask).
The Elite Group would have the five-time champion 2005-7, 2010-11) and defending champion Vassily Ivanchuk back after a break since February. The lineup also includes Leinier Dominguez Perez, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Viktor Laznicka, Vladimir Potkin and Yuniesky Quesada. A parallel premier section would also be played with 10 players.

The traditional Capablanca Chess Memorial - the 47th edition this time - would be held from May 3 to 15 at the Riviera hotel in Havana, Cuba. The Elite Group will once again be a six-player double round robin.
Players who have confirmed their participation include GM Vassily Ivanchuk (2766) of Ukraine, 5-times winner of Capablanca Memorial, and the Cuban GM Leinier Domínguez (2730), three-times winner, and Lázaro Bruzón (2691), with one win.
The Premier Group will be a 10-player round robin with other top Cuban players and at least four foreign Grandmasters. This event will sport average elo of above 2550.

The Open A Group will be played over 10 rounds of Swiss system with about 100 participants. This group will have strong presence of foreign players and will allow the possibility of obtaining FIDE title norms.
The Open A will accept the players with international titles and those rated above 2200 FIDE. All other players will be seeded into Open B, which will also take the format of 10-rounds Swiss.
The participation must be confirmed by email to the Organizing Committee and then in person at the Tournament Technical Meeting on May 3rd in the evening. The emails are: isla@inder.cu, vilela@inder.cu, riveroc@inder.cu.

Ivanchuk wins Capablanca Chess Memorial on tiebreak
Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2011Hello everyone,Defending champion Vasilly Ivanchuk has won the Capablanca Chess Memorial, in Havana, Cuba, with a nice last-round victory over the Vietnamese Grandmaster Le Quang Liem. Both players had 6.5/10 but the Ukrainian grandmaster had a better tiebreak.

The 46th Capablanca Memorial was organised from May 10-21. The main event (or “Elite group”) was a strong, 6-player, double round robin with Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukraine), Leinier Dominguez (Cuba), David Navara (Czech Republic), Lazaro Bruzon (Cuba), Dmitry Andreikin (Russia) and Le Quang Liem (Vietnam). The rate of play was 90 minutes for 40 moves plus 30 minutes to finish the game with 30 seconds increment from move 1. After five rounds, Andreikin, Navara and Le Quang Liem were leading with 3.5 points. Of these three players, it was the Vietnamese grandmaster who continued strongly. In the next round he defeated Dominguez from the white side of a King’s Indian, then drew with Andreikin in a Closed Sicilian and then beat Bruzon with White in a Slav. At that point Le Quang Liem was in sole lead with 5.5/8, a point clear of Andreikin, Navara and Ivanchuk!
The Ukrainian had started with a somewhat disappointing 50% score after seven rounds, but then did everything possible to win the tournament he had won several times before. In round 8 Ivanchuk defeated Andreikin in a Sämisch King’s Indian and then beat Bruzon. In the last round, Ivanchuk defeated Liem. Here are some nice games from the event. Get set for the 46th Capablanca Chess Memorial starting from May 9-21 at the Riviera Hotel in Havana, Cuba. The Memorial will include chess groups like Elite Group, Premier Group, Open Group I, Open Group II and Open Group Children.
There will also be FIDE Arbiters' Seminar, Conference about Jose Raul Capablanca, exhibition of artwork, books and objects related to chess, and screening of chess-related movies.
The main competition is the Elite Group, traditionally a six-player double round robin. Four-time winner Vassily Ivanchuk (UKR 2776) is back apart from other local top players Leinier Dominguez (2726, three times winner of Capablanca Memorial) and Lazaro Bruzon (2693, with one Capablanca trophy), will also compete. Czech champion David Navara (2701).
The young grandmasters invited to the tournament include Le Quang Liem (VIE 2687), two-time winner of the Aeroflot Chess Open and reigning World Junior Champion Dmitry Andreikin (RUS 2687).
The Elite Group will be of 19th FIDE category, with the average elo of 2712. The Premier Group will be a ten-player round robin with an average elo of 2561, which is marking the 13th FIDE category.
The Premier Group is featuring members of the Cuban national team, led by the country's champion Yuniesky Quesada. IM Espinosa Ermes is the sixth Cuban in this event, being granted with the invitation after an exceptional performance at the national championship.
The tournament also includes Italian GM Daniele Vocaturo, recent winner of Tata Steel Group C, GM Emilio Cordova of Peru, GM Manuel Leon Hoyos of Mexico and GM Mark Bluvshtein of Canada.

Open Group I currently has 108 players from 15 countries registered. Among them are 18 Grandmasters and 39 International Masters.
