European Women's Chess Championship 2013 Begins in Belgrade

The European Women's Chess Championship 2013 is running in Belgrade, Serbia from July 22-August 4 with Valentina Gunina of Russia as the defending champion. 

The European Individual Women’s Championship was held for the first time in 2000, in Batumi, Georgia, city famous for many important chess events, as a 32-player knockout event. That year Natalia Zhukova defeated Ekatarina Kovalevskaya in the final with the result 2.5-1.5. Since 2001 the Tournament has had a Swiss system format, and apart from a short switch to a 12-round schedule in 2004-2005, was played with 11-round schedule. Three players won 2 crowns: Pia Cramling (2003 and 2010), Katerina Lahno (2005 and 2008) and Tatiana Kosintseva (2007 and 2009), and all three confirmed arrival in Belgrade.

Belgrade Chess: WGM Sabrina Vega Gutierrez Wins Round-Robin Event

WGM Sabrina Vega Gutierrez has won a special round-robin chess tournament in Belgrade, according to the latest chess news via Fide. The 45th International Women’s Grandmaster chess tournament was held from 3rd to 10th March at the Hotel Slavija in Belgrade. The 10-player round robin event was organized by the Belgrade Chess Association, with sponsorship from Assembly of the City of Belgrade. Top seeded WGM Sabrina Vega Gutierrez from Spain dominated the tournament to achieve a convincing victory with 8.0/9 points. WIM Dina Drozdova from Russia finished second, a point behind the winner, to score a WGM norm.

One of the longest running chess tournaments in the world, established back in 1965, is celebrating 8th March – International Women’s Day.

Women's Chess in Belgrade: Traditional Event Begins March 3

Hello everyone,

The 45th International Women’s Grandmaster chess tournament will take place from 3rd to 10th March at the Hotel Slavija in Belgrade. The 10-player round robin event is organized by the Belgrade Chess Association, with sponsorship from Assembly of the City of Belgrade, according to a Fide chess tournament update.

One of the longest running chess tournaments in the world, established back in 1965, is celebrating 8th March – International Women’s Day.

GM Tamir Nabaty from Israel wins Belgrade Trophy

GM Tamir Nabaty from Israel has won the Belgrade Chess Trophy. The 26th Belgrade International Open Championship (Belgrade Trophy) was held from 24th November to 2nd December in Obrenovac, near Belgrade, with 178 players competing over nine rounds, according to a chessdom.com report.

Grandmasters Tamir Nabaty (Israel) and Dalibor Stojanovic (BIH) emerged victorious in their last round matches against GM Miodrag Savic and GM Branko Damljanovic respectively to share the first place with 7,5 points each. Nabaty counted a slightly better tie-break and is awarded with the winner’s trophy.

The talented junior Marko Nenezic finished undefeated with 6,5 points to earn an IM norm. Ivan Sarenac lost in the final round to GM Peter Drenchev but he won the IM norm nevertheless.

The European Chess Union has awarded the organisation of the European Individual Women’s Chess Championship 2013 to Serbian Chess Federation. The Championship will be held in Belgrade, Serbia from July 22 to August 4, 2013 with a prize fund of 75 000 Eur (60 000 Eur for players, 15 000 Eur for the ECU). The Ministry of Youth and Sport, headed by the famous chess player WGM Alisa Maric, and City of Belgrade are providing financial and logistic support, according to the latest update by Chessdom.
