GM Axel Bachmann wins Cappelle la Grande Chess Open

The latest chess news via FIDE is that GM Axel Bachmann has won the Cappelle la Grande Chess Open.

The 30th Cappelle la Grande Open took place 1-8th March at the Palais des Arts in Cappelle-la -Grande, France. The 9-round Swiss open was organized by the L'Echiquier Cappellois chess club and is registered with FIDE and FFE.

A total of 603 players from 49 countries competed. The prize fund was 30,000 euros, with 3000 euros reserved for the winner.

Grandmasters Axel Bachmann (Paraguay) and Sergei Azarov (Belarus) topped the crosstable with 7,5 points each. Bachmann is declared winner on better tie-break. Only a couple of days before Cappelle la Grande, Bachmann won the open tournament in Rochefort. Half a point behind the winners are GM VOVK Andrey 2605 UKR, GM DING Liren 2717 CHN, GM SUMETS Andrey 2628 UKR, GM MANOLACHE Marius 2495 ROU, GM NEGI Parimarjan 2638 IND and IM SANTIAGO Yago De Moura 2446 BRA.

GM Axel Bachmann wins Rochefort Chess Festival 2014

Hello everyone,

The latest chess tournament news update via FIDE is that the 13th Rochefort Chess Festival was held from 21th to 28th February at the Congres Palais, in Rochefort, France. Just days before the huge Cappelle-la-Grande Open, the Rochefort Festival was an excellent occasion for the players to test their preparations and use the perfect training opportunity.


A total of 50 players competed in the Masters section which was reserved for the players rated above 1900. Grandmaster Axel Bachmann (Paraguay) wins the first place with 7 points.

He is followed by IM Alexandru MANEA (ROU), IM Evandro Amorim BARBOSA (BRA), IM Vincent COLIN (FRA) and IM Spas KOZHUHAROV (BUL) with 6,5 points each.

The tournament favorites, the French Grandmaster Maxime LAGARDE and the Ukrainian Grandmaster Yuri SOLODOVNICHENKO finished only 6th and 7th respectively.

WIM Marina BRUNELO (ITA) and WIM N. RAGHAVI (IND) met each other in the last round for a win and a WGM norm but the fight finished in a draw.

The Accession tournament, available for players rated under 2000, had 109 participants. The young players got to the winners’ podium: Ines LERICHE (FRA, U16), 3rd, Theo LUTARD (FRA, U14), 2nd and the winner Thomas CHARGELEGUE (FRA, U12), with the impressive score of 7,5 points.

The tournaments were played over 9 rounds of Swiss system and offered the prize fund of 7000 EUR. Last year's winner was GM David JOJUA (GEO). Tournament website/Report by IA Dominique Dervieux
