Senior World Chess Champions 2013: Congrats to Yelena Ankudinova and Anatoly Vaisser

The 23rd FIDE Individual World Senior Championships 2013 were held on 11-24th November, 2013, at the conference centre Tamaris in Grand Hotel 4.Opatijska Cvijeta in Opatija, Croatia.

The Championships were organized by the Chess Club “Rijeka” in agreement with FIDE and Croatian Chess Federation, under the auspices of the Mountain-littoral County, the City of Rijeka and the City of Opatija.

The Women's Section had 25 players competing over nine rounds of Swiss system. The surprising winner is WFM Yelena Ankudinova from Kazakhstan (rated 2121) who edged the former champions Nona Gaprindashvili, Tamar Khmiadashvili, Elena Fatalibekova and Galina Strutinskaya. Ankudinova will be awarded with WGM title.

Anatoly Vaisser

The Open Section had 200 participants from 40 countries, including 10 Grandmasters and 25 International Masters. The playing format was 11-round Swiss.

The 2010 World Senior Champion GM Anatoly Vaisser from France and the 2012 World Senior Champion GM Jens Kristiansen from Denmark shared the first place with 8,5/11 points each. Vaisser took his second title thanks to the superior tie-break.

The 23rd World Senior Chess Championships for men and women were open to all players representing the FIDE Chess Federations, regardless of their title or rating, providing that the men are older than 60 (born in 1953 or earlier) and women are older than 50 years of age (born in 1963 or earlier).

World Seniors Chess 2012 Round 7: IM Jens Kristiansen in Sole Lead

Chess Championship 2012 in Greece.

Round 7 of the World Seniors Chess Championship was played in the 5 star Galini Hotel in Kamena Vourla, Greece, on Tuesday. In the open section, IM Jens Kristiansen is in sole lead. In the women's section, the competition is pretty close and again there are WFM Ankudinova, WGM Fatalibekova and WIM Titorenko sharing the lead with 5,0/7. While Ankudinova and Fatalibekova drew their game, WIM Titorenko is back to the first position after defeating with black WGM Strutinskaya. GM Nona Gaprindashvili was held to a draw by WGM Khmiadashvili and WIM Melashvili drew with WIM Beltz.

IM Jens Kristiansen defeated Round 6 co-leader GM Yuri Balashov and jumped into clear first position. The other co-leader of last round and rating favorite of the tournament GM Anatoly Vaisser signed a draw with the legendary GM Evgeny Sveshnikov. They now share the second position with the winners of R7 GM Vladimir Okhotnik and GM Yrjo Rantanen, all with 5,5/7. World Seniors Chess Championship 2012 Leaders: WIM Martina Beltz Leads in Women's Section; GM Anatoly Vaisser, GM Yuri Balashov in Men's Section

GM Balashov shares the lead in the men's section

WIM Martina Beltz is the new sole leader of the World Seniors Chess Championship for women in the 5 star Galini Hotel in Kamena Vourla, Greece. She won her round 5 game against WIM Swietlana Miednikova and jumped on clear first position with 4,0/5.The other top board game of the day WFM Ankudinova – GM Gaprondashvili finished draw, and now they are sharing 3rd position with the winners of the round WGM Strutinskaya and WGM Fatalibekova, all with 3,5/5.

In the men’s section of the World Senior Chess Championship the rating favorite GM Anatoly Vaisser defeated with black the leader of R4 IM Zhelnin. The French player is now sharing first with another leader of this round – GM Yuri Balashov, who won with white against GM Nikolai Pushkov. Third position is shared by seven players – IM Vladimir Zhelnin, GM Mihai Suba, GM Evgeny Sveshnikov, GM Vladimir Okhotnik, IM Jens Kristiansen, IM Mehrshad Sharif, and GM Vlastimil Jansa, all with 4,0/5.
