Progress in Chess is an Ongoing Process: Parimarjan Negi

He used to be a "one dimensional player" but over the years, India's youngest Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi has adapted more "rounded and universal styles" of play which he is looking to use in the biennial Chess World Cup next month. 

"I used to be a one dimensional player going just for the attack, or the complications, but I think over the years I have matured as a player. I believe I have adapted to more rounded and universal style of play. There are many different ways to play chess and I have started adapting to those styles," Negi told PTI from Texas.

"Still, its an ongoing process and I always need to work on little parts of my game. "I feel I have also improved in dealing with the psychological aspect but this area still requires more improvement. But such improvements don't necessarily result in an automatic rise in the ratings as they need to be combined perfectly with the other chess traits," he added. 

Negi have had a good season so far, having won the Cappelle de Grande chess event in France in February and Spring Open International chess tournament in Dallas, Texas in March.

In addition to that, he ended up winning the Continental Chess Association Open in Washington and was declared the joint winner of the USD 43,000 World Open Chess in Virginia this month.

World Chess Open Philadelphia - Ivan Sokolov Wins Title After Armageddon With Alexander Shabalov

The 40th World Open in Philadelphia witnessed an exciting finish. GMs Ivan Sokolov and Alex Shabalov finished at the top of the Open Section standings, both finishing with 7/9 after agreeing to a quick draw in the final round to secure a share of first. Both players could have been caught by GMs Wesley So and Yury Shulman or IM Marc Arnold who all started the final round half-point behind the leaders but none of those players managed a victory, leaving Sokolov and Shabolov alone at the top.

An Armageddon play-off between the two GMs was held after the end of the tournament. Sokolov had the white pieces and 5 minutes while Shabalov had the black pieces, 3 minutes and draw odds (both players also had a 5 second delay). The game was won by Sokolov who becomes the 2012 World Open Champion. The game has been added to the Games Viewer/PGN download.

On the norm front, Arnold had already secured his 3rd and final GM norm going into the round after a victory over GM Robert Hess in round 8. Other GM norms were scored by IM Eesha Karavade and FM John Bryant. IM norms were scored by FM Michael Kleinman, FM Thomas Bartell, Yaacov Norowitz and Luke Harmon-Vellotti.

Shabalov, who has tied for first in the World Open four times, scored a key win over young Indian GM Abhijeet Gupta, fresh off a first-place finish in the Philadelphia International, in Round 7, while Sokolov defeated young American stars GMs Alex Lenderman and Sam Shankland on his way to a 7-2 finish.

Sokolov prevailed in a blitz playoff game with Shabalov for bragging rights as the official World Open champion.

Laznicka Wins World Open 2010 - America's premier chess event

Hi Everybody!

Czech Grandmaster Viktor Laznicka has won the 38th World Open chess tournament in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The World Open is America's premier open event and attracts more than a 1,000 players from around the world for various tournament categories.

This year, about 1,200 players took part in the 10 sections of the World Open The top Open Section had 119 players with 35 grandmasters. Laznicka won six of the first rounds and drew the remaining three.

Laznicka finished on 7.5/9 which was half a point ahead of GMs Harikrishna, Smirin and McShane, and a point more than GMs Van Wely, Gustafsson, Potkin and Lenderman.
