Three more Cuban chess players qualify for World Cup of Chess

Chess blog for latest chess news and chess trivia (c) Alexandra Kosteniuk, 2011

Hi everybody,

This is chess news from Cuba where players are going from strength to strength in our wonderful sport. Cuban grandmasters (GMs) Yuniesky Quesada and Fidel Corrales as well as International Master (IM) Isam Ortiz have qualified for the upcoming World Cup of Chess after their participation in the Continental Championship of the Americas that concluded on Sunday in Toluca, Mexico. .
Quesada, Corrales and Ortiz thus joined Bruzon and GM Leinier Dominguez, who also secured a berth in the world competition during a regional qualifying tournament held last month in Santiago de los Caballeros, the Dominican Republic. Bruzon won the contest in Toluca with 7.5 units out of nine possible.
The World Cup of Chess is scheduled for Khanty Mansiysk, Russia, from August 26 to September 21 later this year.

Here is our earlier post about the Cuban grandmasters. Stay tuned for more updates.

First Photo of Women Winners of the Olympiad

Click to enlarge, photo © www.chesspics.com
Hi everybody!

I just want to share one photo taken just a few moments ago after the prize giving ceremony of the Chess Olympiads here in Khanty-Mansiysk.

It's our Russian-1 Women's team, who won all 11 matches of the event (that's a record, no other team has ever won all their matches!).

See the full results here.

In order of the boards:

1. Tatiana Kosintseva, GM, ELO 2573
2. Nadezhda Kosintseva, IM, ELO 2565
3. Alexandra Kosteniuk, GM, ELO 2524
4. Alisa Galliamova, IM, ELO 2482
5. Valentina Gunina, WGM, ELO 2465

In addition to the Gold Team medals, both sisters Tatiana and Nadezhda Kosintseva got Gold medals on their boards, an extra bravo to them, too!

We'll have many photos and even videos of the prize ceremony tomorrow.

Meet the 2010 Women Chess Olympiad Gold Medals Holders!

Hi everybody,

It's been an amazing ride, and now, already one round before the end of the 2010 Chess Olympiads in Khanty-Mansiysk, the Women's Gold Medal winning team is known, nobody can catch up with them (see table after 10 rounds): Russia-1!

The team started in first position, with an awesome average rating of 2536 ELO. With all the pressure to perform, they all kept their cool and played at a high level, winning every single one of their first 10 matches, which included meeting the very strong teams of China, Ukraine, Georgia, and many more potential contenders for the Gold. Second best up to now China was only able to win 8 of their 10 matches and everybody else even fewer.

The Gold Medal Winning Team is comprised of:

- Tatiana Kosintseva, GM, ELO 2573
- Nadezhda Kosintseva, IM, ELO 2565
- Alexandra Kosteniuk, GM, ELO 2524
- Alisa Galliamova, IM, ELO 2482
- Valentina Gunina, WGM, ELO 2465

In team competitions, to win you need to be not only in top form, but also in full harmony with your team-mates. You need to make the correct strategy of board placements, caring for the best result and not for personal prestige. You need to do your best for your team, for your country. Russia-1 has demonstrated all those qualities.

Note that the event is not finished, there is a round tomorrow October 3 that will decide the silver and bronze medals for the women and all the medals for the men. Also, both Kosintseva sisters as well as Valentina Gunina have excellent individual results on their boards and have good chances to win extra medals, so let's wait till October 3 to make a final count of medals, there will be many for those 5 ladies!

Congratulations to the team, you deserve your Gold Medals!
