Ssegwanyi, Amoko Win Rwabushenyi Chess in Kampala, Uganda

Arthur Ssegwanyi (rated 2251) beat Elijah Emojong (IM) rated 2339 to claim the 2014 FIDE rated Rwabushenyi Chess Memorial Tournament after overcoming a tough decisive game eight of the four day event.

Ssegwanyi scored 7 points, same as the newly elected Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) Chess male player of the year for 2013, Emojong (finished with 7 wins) after a tie break with Arthur Ssegwanyi, who won 6 and drew 2.

In the ladies’ category, Ivy Amoko won her maiden title following an impressive performance that saw the law graduate from Makerere University winning all her 8 games.

Amoko returned 8 points after 8 rounds to win the 600,000 top cash prize for the women. Christine Namaganda was runners up to clinch 300,000 cash prize.

Richard Tugume, with 7.5 points out of 8, having drawn with Hassan Mulambe won the unrated category with Malcom Etolu taking the runners' up.

Last year's winner, Harold Wanyama finished third to take home Ug.shs 300,000. In the Under age catergory, Gloria Nansubuga won the U-14 to take home Ug.shs 50,000 while Henry Kimbowa took the boy's version.

The Rwabusenyi Memorial is the biggest Chess tournament in Uganda that has attracted 200 participants from across the entire East African region.

The Olympiad qualifiers tourney at Pope Paul memorial will be the next local tournament on the Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) calendar 18th to 19th January for the unrated players. (Chess Blog Admin note: Our earlier report was also via kawowo.com.)

Ssegwanyi and Nsubuga maintain lead Uganda National chess championship 2011

Arthur Ssegwanyi and Haruna Nsubuga won their eighth round games played at Hotel Africana on Sunday to lead jointly with 7 points each. Ssegwanyi beat FIDE Master Elijah Emojong in the eigth round while Nsubuga beat Farouk Fauza to get to 7 points. The two are unbeaten in the event after winning six games each and drawing two.

More upsets were experienced as defending champion Harold Wanyama lost to Bob Bibasa while another pre-tourney favourite Simon Gonza lost to Mathias Ssonko. In joint third position are youngsters Ssonko at 6 points, David Muwanguzi who beat Amos Emojong also at 6 points and Micheal Mawanda who beat Rajab Kamoga. 

The event's winner will be the National Chess Champion of Uganda and represent the country at the Olympiad in Turkey next year. Two more rounds will be played on Sunday 20th November 2011 at Hotel Africana. You can read the original report here.

Back to chess news from Africa - Uganda to be specific where the national chess championship will witness the fifth round on Saturday, November 12, 2011, at Hotel Africana. The lead pair of Arthur Ssegwanyi and Simon Gonza will play an important match while Haruna Nsubuga takes on Samuel Musagga. Rajab Kamoga will play (Farouk Fauza both on 3.5 points). Struggling defending champion, Harold Wanyama will be seeking to redeem himself against unpredictable Mike Akabu.

A total of four rounds will be played this weekend with two games on Saturday and two more games on Sunday. The last two rounds will be completed on Sunday 20th November 2011. The total number of rounds to be played is ten. Considering the big number of rounds it is still too early to predict a winner inspite of the early rounds upset of defending champion, Wanyama.


FM Elijah Emojong who missed the first two rounds is at 2 points, 1.5 points off the pace and cannot be wriiten off either. The winner of the event will other than being named National Champion automatically qualify for Uganda's team at the next World Chess Olympian in turkey.
